Heterogeneous distributions of black carbon in sediments from three Asian mangrove wetlands.

Black carbon (BC) is produced by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels and plays an important role in global climate change and carbon cycling. Mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes are collectively recognized as the three major blue carbon systems. However, research on BC in mangroves remains limited. We investigated mangrove sediments from three regions, Hong Kong (HK), Guangxi (GX), and Bangladesh (BD). Using Chemical Thermal Oxidation (CTO-375) and Benzene Polycarboxylic Acids (BPCA) analytical methods, along with elemental analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and M

Microbe interactions drive the formation of floating iron films in circumneutral wetlands.

Floating iron (Fe) films are widely found in wetlands that can form oxic-anoxic boundaries under circumneutral conditions. These films play a crucial role in the redox transformations and bioavailability of nutrients and trace metals. Current studies mainly focus on chemical oxidation during Fe film formation under circumneutral conditions. The functional microorganisms and associated microbial processes involved in Fe film formation have yet to be investigated in detail. Here, we investigated the microbial communities and involved microbial processes for the formation of floating Fe films in

Effectiveness of Exogenous Fe2+ on Nutrient Removal in Gravel-Based Constructed Wetlands.

A group of microcosm-scale unplanted constructed wetlands (CWs) were established to evaluate the effectiveness of exogenous Fe2+ addition on ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), and total phosphorus (TP) removal. The addition of Fe2+ concentrations were 5 mg/L (CW-Fe5), 10 mg/L (CW-Fe10), 20 mg/L (CW-Fe20), 30 mg/L (CW-Fe30), and 0 mg/L (CW-CK). The microbial community in CWs was also analyzed to reveal the enhancement mechanism of pollutant removal. The results showed that the addition of Fe2+ could significantly (p < 0.05) reduce the NO3--N concentration in the CWs. When 10

Organic and metallic pollutants in water treatment and natural wetlands: a review.

A literature review shows that more than 500 compounds occur in wetlands, and also that wetlands are suitable for removing these compounds. There are, however, obvious pitfalls for treatment wetlands, the most important being the maintenance of the hydraulic capacity and the detention time. Treatment wetlands should have an adapted design to target specific compounds. Aquatic plants and soils are suitable for wastewater treatment with a high capacity of removing nutrients and other substances through uptake, sorption and microbiological degradation. The heavy metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pb were

Treating surface water with low nutrients concentration by mixed substrates constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetland (CW) has been widely applied in nutrients reduction for eutrophication control, especially in the advanced treatment of effluent of municipal sewage plants or the in-lake river treatment with high hydraulic loads and low nutrient concentrations. But in real application, it shows lower nutrient removal efficiency. The main reason is that traditional substrates, such as soil and gravel have low capacity for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This study aims to enhance nutrients removal in constructed wetland systems by using series of substrates including calcium silicate hydra

Evaluation of constructed wetlands by wastewater purification ability and greenhouse gas emissions.

Domestic wastewater is a significant source of nitrogen and phosphorus, which cause lake eutrophication. Among the wastewater treatment technologies, constructed wetlands are a promising low-cost means of treating point and diffuse sources of domestic wastewater in rural areas. However, the sustainable operation of constructed wetland treatment systems depends upon a high rate conversion of organic and nitrogenous loading into their metabolic gaseous end products, such as N2O and CH4. In this study, we examined and compared the performance of three typical types of constructed wetlands: Free W

Dietary mercury exposure and bioaccumulation in amphibian larvae inhabiting Carolina bay wetlands.

Inorganic mercury and methylmercury concentrations were measured both in guts and remaining carcasses of southern leopard frog (Rana sphenocephala) larvae from 10 Carolina bay wetlands in South Carolina, USA. Significant variation among bays in methylmercury and inorganic mercury concentrations existed both in guts and carcasses. There was a moderate negative correlation between dissolved organic carbon concentration in bays and mean inorganic mercury concentrations in guts. There was also a weak positive correlation between pH in bays and mean methylmercury concentrations in carcasses. The ra

Thresholds of Wetland Carbon Sink Regulation by Water Level.

Wetlands are vital carbon sinks and play a key role in climate regulation. However, climate change and human disturbances are altering wetland hydrology with water level fluctuations profoundly influencing carbon sequestration. While previous syntheses and modeling studies have suggested the existence of water level thresholds in wetland carbon dynamics, the mechanisms underlying these thresholds remain poorly understood, and field-based evidence is lacking. Here, we present results from a long-term field experiment across six water level treatments, ranging from 100 to 40 cm above the soil su

Adaptation of a constructed wetland to simultaneous treatment of monochlorobenzene and perchloroethene.

Mixed groundwater contaminations by chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC) cause environmental hazards if contaminated groundwater discharges into surface waters and river floodplains. Constructed wetlands (CW) or engineered natural wetlands provide a promising technology for the protection of sensitive water bodies. We adapted a constructed wetland able to treat monochlorobenzene (MCB) contaminated groundwater to a mixture of MCB and tetrachloroethene (PCE), representing low and high chlorinated model VOC. Simultaneous treatment of both compounds was efficient after an adaptation time o

[Characteristics of sediments and pore water in Lake Nansi wetland].

In order to investigate the influence of sediment physical and chemical characteristics on the vertical distribution of NH4+, PO4(3-) and NO3(-) and their diffusive fluxes at sediment-water surface, pore water equilibrators (Peeper) were employed to obtain multiple pore water profiles from reed and bulrush sediments in Lake Nansihu wetland. The results showed that sediment properties in the planted reed and bulrush fields, i.e. water content, porosity, KCl-extractable NH4+ and NO3(-) were generally greater than those in seldom vegetation, and the porosity in 2-5 cm depth subsurface sediments i

Wetland influences on mercury transport and bioaccumulation in South Carolina.

There are three distinct geological provinces in South Carolina (SC), with the blue ridge/piedmont regions in the west/central portion of the state and the coastal plain region in the central/eastern region of the state. Samples were collected along this gradient to identify potential factors contributing to the concentrations of total Hg and total organic carbon (TOC) throughout the state. Overall, there is a gradient across the state, with water column concentrations of total Hg (9-53 pM) and TOC (80-2721 microM) increasing as one moves from the blue ridge/piedmont region to the coastal floo

Sulfate addition increases methylmercury production in an experimental wetland.

Atmospheric mercury is the dominant Hg source to fish in northern Minnesota and elsewhere. However, atmospherically derived Hg must be methylated prior to accumulating in fish. Sulfate-reducing bacteria are thought to be the primary methylators of Hg in the environment. Previous laboratory and field mesocosm studies have demonstrated an increase in methylmercury (MeHg) levels in sediment and peatland porewaters following additions of sulfate. In the current ecosystem-scale study, sulfate was added to half of an experimental wetland at the Marcell Experimental Forest located in northeastern Min

Effects of plants on the removal of hexavalent chromium in wetland sediments.

The effect of two wetland plants, Typha latifolia L. (cattail) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud (common reed), on the fate of Cr(VI) in wetland sediments was investigated using greenhouse bench-scale microcosm experiments. The removal of Cr(VI) was monitored based on the vertical profiles of aqueous Cr(VI) in the sediments. The Cr(VI) removal rates were estimated taking into account plant transpiration, which was found to significantly concentrate dissolved species in the sediments. After correcting for evapotranspiration, the actual Cr(VI) removal rates were significantly higher

Sources of methylmercury to a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin.

Several lines of evidence suggest that wetlands may be a major source of methylmercury (MeHg) to receiving waters, perhaps explaining the strong correlation between concentrations of waterborne MeHg and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in regions such as northern Wisconsin. We evaluated the relative importance of wetland export in the MeHg budget of a wetland-dominated lake in northern Wisconsin using mass balance. Channelized runoff from a large headwater wetland was the major source of water and total mercury (HgT) to the lake during the study period. The wetland also exported MeHg in high con

Phosphorus cycling in wetland soils: the importance of phosphate diesters.

Productivity in P limited peatlands is regulated in part by the turnover of organic phosphates, which is influenced by the chemical nature of the compounds involved. We used solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to quantify organic and inorganic phosphates in benthic floc (a mixture of plant detritus and algae) and underlying soil from sites along P gradients in hard water and soft water areas of the northern Florida Everglades, USA. Phosphorus-enriched sites were dominated by cattail (Typha spp.), while unenriched sites included sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz) ridges

Transport and fate of trifluoroacetate in upland forest and wetland ecosystems.

Although trifluoroacetate (TFA), a breakdown product of chlorofluorocarbon replacements, is being dispersed widely within the biosphere, its ecological fate is largely unknown. TFA was added experimentally to an upland, northern hardwood forest and to a small forest wetland ecosystem within the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Inputs of TFA were not transported conservatively through these ecosystems; instead, significant amounts of TFA were retained within the vegetation and soil compartments. More TFA was retained by the wetland ecosystem than by the upland forest ecosyste

[Key processes and influencing mechanisms of lateral carbon exchange in coastal wetlands.].

Coastal wetlands are crucial "blue carbon" ecosystems. Previous studies primarily focus on vertical carbon sequestration in carbon sink assessments, often overlooking the key pathway of lateral carbon exchange. We systematically reviewed the biogeochemical transformation processes, key measurement methods, and driving mechanisms of key components in lateral carbon exchange (dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, and particulate organic carbon) in coastal wetlands. Compared to vertical carbon burial rates, lateral carbon export rates in coastal wetlands are higher, with no differ

Unraveling the activity of phage-carrying antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health challenge, and risk assessments based solely on gene abundance often underestimate the immediacy of resistance dissemination. This study presented a carrier-centric framework integrating metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling with deep learning-based identification of mobile genetic elements, applied to a full-scale constructed wetland (CW). CW overall reduced ARG burdens, with genomic abundance in plants, sediments, and water decreasing by 98.5%, 80.9%, and 88.8%, respectively. However, transcriptional activity showed an opposite

Carbon Cycling in Wetlands Under the Shadow of Microplastics: Challenges and Prospects.

Wetlands are one of the most crucial ecosystems for regulating carbon sequestration and mitigating global climate change. However, the disturbance to carbon dynamics caused by microplastics (MPs) in wetlands cannot be overlooked. This review explores the impacts of MPs on the carbon cycles within wetland ecosystems, focusing on the underlying physicochemical and microbial mechanisms. The accumulation of MPs in wetland sediments can severely destabilize plant root functions, disrupting water, nutrient, and oxygen transport, thereby reducing plant biomass development. Although MPs may temporaril
