Sensewheel: an adjunct to wheelchair skills training.

The purpose of this Letter was to investigate the influence of real-time verbal feedback to optimise push arc during over ground manual wheelchair propulsion. Ten healthy non-wheelchair users pushed a manual wheelchair for a distance of 25 m on level paving, initially with no feedback and then with real-time verbal feedback aimed at controlling push arc within a range of 85°-100°. The real-time feedback was provided by a physiotherapist walking behind the wheelchair, viewing real-time data on a tablet personal computer received from the Sensewheel, a lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel.

Modifications in Wheelchair Propulsion Technique with Speed.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive loading of the upper limb joints during manual wheelchair (WC) propulsion (WCP) has been identified as a factor that contributes to shoulder pain, leading to loss of independence and decreased quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine how individual manual WC users with paraplegia modify propulsion mechanics to accommodate expected increases in reaction forces (RFs) generated at the pushrim with self-selected increases in WCP speed. METHODS: Upper extremity kinematics and pushrim RFs were measured for 40 experienced manual WC users with paraplegia while

Simulation model of a lever-propelled wheelchair.

Wheelchair efficiency depends significantly on the individual adjustment of the wheelchair propulsion interface. Wheelchair prescription involves reconfiguring the wheelchair to optimize it for specific user characteristics. Wheelchair tuning procedure is a complicated task that is performed usually by experienced rehabilitation engineers. In this study, we report initial results from the development of a musculoskeletal model of the wheelchair lever propulsion. Such a model could be used for the development of new advanced wheelchair approaches that allow wheelchair designers and practitioner

[Wheelchair basketball from the orthopedic viewpoint].

155 (aged 16 to 52 years) wheelchair basketball players were surveyed to determine athletic injuries and overload-syndromes. During their active participation in wheelchair basketball 60.6% of the players have suffered 272 injuries and overload-syndromes. Those were mainly localised at the upper extremity (74.6%). Acute injuries predominate with 57.7%. Strains of the finger joint and skin injuries were found to be the most common injuries. Myogelosis and tendinosis were the most common reported overload-syndromes. A significantly higher number of complaints were associated with wheelchair bask

Three-dimensional kinematics of wheelchair propulsion.

A three-dimensional (3-D) biomechanical model was used to determine upper extremity kinematics of 16 male subjects with low-level paraplegia while performing wheelchair propulsion (WCP). A six-camera VICON motion analysis system was used to acquire the coordinate data of ten anatomic markers. Joint axes for the wrist and elbow were defined along with the planes of motion for the upper arm (humerus) and trunk. The group's mean and standard deviation profiles were graphed for eight of the nine rotations measured during WCP. Variability in the intercycle and intersubject movement patterns were ca

Clinical evaluation of the Hemi Wheelchair Cushion.

A foam cushion was designed for wheelchair users who propel their wheelchairs with the assistance of one lower extremity. It allows users to extend one hip to reach the ground without having to slide forward on the seat, thus maintaining a more erect posture. The cushion was evaluated to identify contraindications for its use. Eleven subjects (10 stroke patients and 1 patient with an above-the-knee amputation) were tested on the Hemi Wheelchair Cushion and on a second cushion chosen by their primary occupational therapists. Seat interface pressures, both before and after dynamic movement, sitt

Exploring the influence of a school-based wheelchair skills training program on manual wheelchair mobility in youth: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-directed manual wheelchair (MWC) mobility can facilitate participation in school, sports and community activities for pediatric MWC users (PMWUs), though many rely on others for getting around. The Wheelchair Skills Training Program (WSTP) has demonstrated effectiveness in improving MWC mobility in adults with preliminary evidence in pediatrics. However, rehabilitation professionals lack time to provide sufficient training. Expanding training opportunities within the community, such as in schools, could be promising, but has not been documented. A mobility training physical

Motion analysis of wheelchair propulsion movements in hemiplegic patients: effect of a wheelchair cushion on suppressing posterior pelvic tilt.

[Purpose] This study sought to ascertain whether, in hemiplegic patients, the effect of a wheelchair cushion to suppress pelvic posterior tilt when initiating wheelchair propulsion would continue in subsequent propulsions. [Subjects] Eighteen hemiplegic patients who were able to propel a wheelchair in a seated position participated in this study. [Methods] An adjustable wheelchair was fitted with a cushion that had an anchoring function, and a thigh pad on the propulsion side was removed. Propulsion movements from the seated position without moving through three propulsion cycles were measured

Passive Add-On Mechanism with Rotational Dampers for Step-Down Support in Electric Wheelchairs.

This study proposes a damped add-on mechanism to mitigate the impact of an electric wheelchair on a step-down. A rotational damper is mounted on the add-on mechanism to reduce the velocity of wheel fall, thereby mitigating the impact. By selecting the damper based on a mechanical model of the wheelchair and the rider, the impact can be effectively mitigated for users with different body weights. Performance evaluation experiments confirmed that the damper could reduce the peak acceleration of the wheelchair seat when the rear wheels landed on the ground to 27% of that without the damper. Ergonomic guidelines for the design interfaces of additive modules for manual wheelchairs: sagittal plane.

When designing wheelchair propulsion systems operated with the upper limb, there is a noticeable lack of ergonomic analyses informing about the areas on the wheelchair frame where hand-operated controls can be installed. With that in mind, a research goal was set to measure the areas of human hand reach within the area defined by the structural elements of a manual wheelchair. An ergonomic analysis was performed on a group of ten patients representing 50% of anthropometric dimensions. Motion capture and image analysis software based on the openCV library were used for the measurement. The cond

Development of A Learning-Based Terrain Classification Framework for Pushrim-Activated Power-Assisted Wheelchairs.

Pushrim-activated power-assisted wheels (PAPAWs) are assistive technologies that provide on-demand torque assistance to wheelchair users. Although the available power can reduce the physical load of wheelchair propulsion, it may also cause maneuverability and controllability issues. Commercially-available PAPAW controllers are insensitive to environmental changes, leading to inefficient and/or unsafe wheelchair movements. In this regard, adaptive velocity/torque control strategies could be employed to improve safety and stability. To investigate this objective, we propose a context-aware senso
