Risk and protective factors associated with depressive symptoms among school-going adolescents in Malaysia: a cross‑sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a growing global concern, particularly among Malaysian adolescents, where its prevalence is on the rise. This study investigates both risk and protective correlates of depressive symptoms in a representative sample of school-attending Malaysian adolescents. METHODS: Data from the 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS): Adolescent Health Survey, a comprehensive nationwide study. A multistage stratified cluster sampling method was used, and it involved two stages. The survey included a representative sample of secondary school students. Depressive symptoms

Family extension and the elderly: economic, demographic, and family cycle factors.

This paper reports on the results of applying a multivariate regression model of living arrangements choices to census data on the 1970 U. S. population of nonmarried, nonparenting adults. The model examines the factors affecting living with (1) relatives or (2) living alone or with nonrelatives. These factors include sex, income, marital history, and age. In addition, the model tests whether living arrangements choices differ for the elderly relative to other ages. The analysis shows that higher income, the experience of divorce, and being male are all associated with a higher probability of

Epidemiology of dysphoria and depression in an elderly population.

The authors surveyed 997 elderly people living in the community and found that the rate of significant dysphoric symptomatology was 14.7%. Forty-five (4.5%) of these individuals suffered from dysphoric symptoms only, and 37 (3.7%) had symptoms of a major depressive disorder. Eighteen (1.8%) suffered from symptoms of primary depressive disorder and 19 (1.9%) from symptoms of secondary depressive disorder. Sixty-five (6.5%) had depressive symptoms associated with impaired physical health. The frequency of widowhood, impairment in social resources, and impairment in economic resources was greater

Predictors of Frailty, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Life Satisfaction Among Elderly Individuals in an Urbanized Village in New Delhi, India.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Aging is associated with increased vulnerability to frailty, cognitive decline, and reduced life satisfaction, particularly in rapidly urbanizing settings. This study aimed to assess the predictors of frailty, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and life satisfaction among elderly residents in an urbanized village in New Delhi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study among 221 participants aged ≥60 years in South Delhi. Frailty was assessed using the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS), cognitive function with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA

Men and women aging differently.

Gender differences in health, socioeconomic status, and social resources persist into advanced old age and result in variations in life trajectories and responses to the challenges of longevity. The implications of these differences are examined in a sample of 150 community-dwelling white men and women. The majority are women, a high proportion of whom are unmarried, living alone, functionally impaired, and have reduced financial resources. Men, in contrast, have fewer decrements, they are more independent, and they exercise more control over their environment. However, their well-being may be

Late-life depression: how to make a difficult diagnosis.

Approximately 15% of persons age 65 and older have major depression. Risk factors include a recent loss (eg, widowhood or mastectomy), living alone, co-morbidities (eg, hypertension, stroke, cognitive deficits), and drug interactions. Warning signs of depression may include weight loss, sleep problems, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, loss of interest in sexual relations, or changes in activities of daily living. The diagnosis of depression is easy to miss if the physician doesn't look for it, because older persons often don't mention feeling depressed. Yet undetected depression can be dead

Does Living Alone Affect Self-Perceptions of Aging? Findings From Two Waves of the Health and Retirement Study.

The current study examined if living alone is associated with self-perceptions of aging (SPA). The study used two-wave longitudinal data, sampled from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and collected in 2014 and 2018. In total, 6506 older adults aged 60-99 years at baseline were followed up with a 4-year lag. Results indicated that there was no significant change in SPA at follow-up regardless of changes in living arrangements. However, at follow-up, there was a significant cross-sectional difference in SPA between older adults who remained in partnership and those who transitioned to livi

Epidemiology of depression in the elderly.

Epidemiologic results of studies of depression in the elderly are reviewed in this paper. There are discrepancies from one study to another as regards prevalence rates in the community. In fact, different methods of assessment as well as different periods frame may explain these variations. The use of diagnostic interviews commonly used in younger populations have been questioned in the elderly mostly due to cognitive problems. Other methods of assessment are briefly reviewed. In clinical settings most of the studies have assessed depressive symptoms. As regards risk factors female sex, widowh

Why study widowed women: a rationale.

This essay represents an attempt to bring together literature from a variety of sources and develop it into an explanation and rationale for studying widowed women. Four factors are important in this regard: (1) the disproportionate number of widows vis-à-vis widowers, (2) the problems faced by widows and their accentuation as a result of prevailing societal norms and values, (3) the differences in response and adaptation to widowhood by sex, and (4) the more negative consequences, experienced by widowed women as compared to divorced women. Widows are more likely than other persons who have lo

The role of technology-based interventions in older adults experiencing spousal bereavement: a systematic review of clinical trials.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of technology-based interventions designed to support bereaved older adults—primarily those experiencing spousal loss—by analyzing data from various clinical trials. METHODS: The search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Google Scholar search engine up to August 2025, following PRISMA guidelines. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers using a predefined checklist, and the methodological quality of the included studies were assessed using the Verhagen tool for ra

Mitigating HIV risk associated with widow cleansing and wife inheritance using combined biomedical and structural interventions in western Kenya: a mathematical modeling study.

BACKGROUND: In parts of Africa, women who become widowed lose housing, bank accounts, and other property and must re-marry to avoid extreme poverty. To re-marry, some women are required to undergo widow "cleansing"-condomless sex with a man who removes "impurities" ascribed to her from her husband's death-and are "inherited" as a wife of a brother-in-law. This study explores how HIV biomedical and structural interventions could reduce HIV-related harms associated with these practices. METHODS: We adapted EMOD-HIV, an HIV agent-based network transmission model previously calibrated and validat

Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Widows' Experiences of Grief, Identity, and Support: A Qualitative Study of Relationships Following the Loss of a Spouse or Partner.

OBJECTIVES: Research with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older widows rarely focuses on familial relationships. Studies on heterosexual spousal bereavement indicate older widows face issues influencing identity but show resilience by maintaining close relationships with adult children and extended family. Though research with older LGB widows suggests similarities around loss and resilience, grief and family engagement are markedly different. METHODS: Guided by Relational Cultural Theory, which illuminates how LGB women cope through connection/disconnection, this qualitative descriptive stu

A controlled trial of two mind-body interventions for grief in widows and widowers.

Objective: Following bereavement, yearning and grief rumination are repetitive cognitive processes that can lead to disordered grief. Mindfulness training (MT) has been shown to reduce maladaptive repetitive thought. The current quasi-randomized controlled trial examined the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of MT for bereavement-related grief. Method: Ninety-five widow(er)s (Mage = 67.5, 79% women, 98% White) between 6 months to 4 years post-loss were assigned to a 6-week MT intervention or a progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) intervention, or a wait-list condition. The Application and Prospect of Mobile Health (mHealth) in Health Service for Older People Living Alone in Community: A Narrative Review.

As a result of improvements in life expectancy and reductions in fertility rate, the increasing world population ageing brings huge challenges for both developed and developing countries. Such factors as fewer children, migration of children and widowhood further increase the number of older people living alone. Older adults prefer age in place, which means care in the home. As the main place older people live in, care in community absolutely needs more attention. Optimizing health services for the elderly living in community is of positive significance to health promotion and happiness enhanc

Social isolation and loneliness among older people: issues and future challenges in community and residential settings.

Although often associated with older age, loneliness and social isolation are not well understood in terms of their prevalence, risk and protective factors. Evidence suggests that only a minority of community-dwelling older people are "severely" lonely or isolated, however a number of factors need to be considered to fully understand the extent and significance of the problem. Community-based studies have identified a variety of risk factors for loneliness/isolation including widowhood, no (surviving) children, living alone, deteriorating health, and life events (eg, loss and bereavement). How does social support affect subjective well-being among Chinese widowed older adults?

BACKGROUND: Social support (SS) is an important factor influencing subjective well-being (SWB) in older adults. This is especially true for the special group of widowed older adults (WOA). Widowhood means that older adults have lost their most important SS, and therefore, the search for a guardian from outside the spouse becomes a central issue in ensuring the SWB of WOA. METHODS: The data for this paper were obtained from CGSS 2021, a large national social survey in China. We operationalized SWB as an individual's overall perception of his or her experience of happiness using 'affective well
