Williams syndrome first described in 1961 is generally characterised by mental deficiency, gregarious personality, unusual "elfin" facies, supravalvular aortic stenosis and idiopathic infantile hypercalcaemia. Patients with Williams syndrome show a hemizygous submicroscopic deletion of 7q11.23 detectable by fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH). The deleted portion of the chromosome corresponds to the Elastin gene. We report 3 girls with characteristics of Williams syndrome in whom the diagnosis was confirmed by demonstration of the hemizygous deletion of 7q11.23 in the karyotype by FISH. T

Williams syndrome (WS) is a multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation syndrome caused by a microdeletion on the long arm of chromoome 7 including the elastin gene. Possibly it is a contiguous gene syndrome with autosomal dominant transmission. Seventy-seven WS patients from 11 Italian Pediatric-Dysmorphology-Genetics Units were collected by means of a questionnaire designed to draw a comprehensive clinical picture, to define the frequency of different traits and associations thereof, to better understand the clinical evolution, to improve the prognosis and to ameliorate the follow-up. Forty-five patients with Williams syndrome (WS) were evaluated for oral abnormalities. The mean age of the patients was 9.25 years, the median age was 6.7 years, and the majority (62.2%) were male. Hypodontia was present in 11.1% of the patients. Abnormal tooth morphology was noted in 12.5% of the primary dentitions and 40.7% of the permanent dentitions. With the exception of the primary mandibular central incisors of males, all mesiodistal incisor crown dimensions were statistically significantly smaller when compared with norms (P < 0.05). At least one hypoplastic enamel defect was present i

Many patients with Williams syndrome (WS) are not diagnosed until they are old enough to demonstrate the characteristic personality and facial changes. A number of these changes are quite subtle and none of them is present in all affected individuals. The cause of WS remains obscure and consequently, there are no cytogenetic, biochemical, or molecular studies to help in the diagnosis of patients in whom the diagnosis is uncertain. We have generated a mean WS metacarpophalangeal pattern profile (MCPP) on 21 clinically diagnosed individuals with WS. This mean syndrome profile shows that WS hands

Williams syndrome was first described in 1961 (Williams et al. 1961) and is a well-recognised clinical syndrome characterised by growth deficiency, learning difficulties and a typical facies. We describe a 9-year-old girl with classical features of Williams syndrome who presented with acute vocal cord paralysis for which no other cause was found.

The Williams and Beuren's syndrome associates a particuliar facies, a mental debility, a supravalvular aortic stenosis, and frequent vascular anomalies of pulmonary artery as well as aorta and its branches. Relations between this syndrome and congenital idiopathic hypercalcemia seem now determined; the hypertension which has been frequently observed in this last case, seems more unusual in the case of Williams and Beuren's syndrome. The authors report a case about this syndrome in which the hypertension seemed linked to a stenosis of the left renal artery and which has been treated surgically.

Williams-Campbell syndrome (WCS) is a rare congenital disorder characterised by the absence of cartilage in sub-segmental bronchi, leading to bronchiectasis. We report a case of a late adolescence male presenting with chronic respiratory symptoms initially misdiagnosed as asthma, later confirmed to have WCS following detailed evaluation. This case highlights the importance of considering WCS in the differential diagnosis of unexplained bronchiectasis and emphasises the role of advanced imaging techniques in its diagnosis.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by high social interest and approach motivation as well as intellectual disability and anxiety. Despite the fact that social stimuli are believed to have an increased intrinsic reward value in WS, it is not known whether this translates to learning and decision making. Genes homozygously deleted in WS are linked to sociability in the general population, making it a potential model condition for understanding the social brain. Probabilistic reinforcement learning was studied with either social or non-social rewards for correct cho

Craniosynostosis has been previously reported in patients with Williams syndrome. Due to the associated significant cardiovascular anomalies, with an attendant increased risk of death under anaesthesia, most patients have been managed conservatively. Here we report the multidisciplinary approach in a 12-month-old female infant with Williams syndrome who has metopic and sagittal craniosynostosis. The child successfully underwent calvarial remodelling procedures, with the clinical outcome demonstrating dramatically improved global development after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome anxiety research predominantly focuses on disorder prevalence and symptomatology, categorised using standardised mental health classifications. However, the use of these assessments may not fully capture the phenotypic features of anxiety in Williams syndrome. In this study, we examined characteristics of anxiety using a formulation framework.
METHOD: A semi-structured interview was conducted with thirteen parents of individuals with Williams syndrome (median age: 19, age range: 12-45, 8 females).
RESULTS: Various anxiety triggers were reported, including anxiet

Williams syndrome (WS) is a relatively rare congenital disorder which manifests across multiple organ systems with a wide spectrum of severity. Cardiovascular anomalies are the most common and concerning manifestations of WS, with supravalvar aortic stenosis present in up to 70% of patients with WS. Although a relatively rare disease, these patients frequently require sedation or anesthesia for a variety of medical procedures. The risk of sudden death in this population is 25 to 100 times that of the general population, with many documented deaths associated with sedation or anesthesia. This i

Williams syndrome is a developmental disorder including dysmorphia, cardiovascular malformations and a specific neuropsychological profile together with other associated disorders. We report the case of a 17-year old girl, born of a non-inbred marriage, with Williams syndrome discovered during an assessment of degree of failure to thrive. Its association with primary adrenal insufficiency makes it unique. Diagnosis is confirmed by cytogenetic and molecular analysis. Its management consists of the implementation of treatment for adrenal insufficiency associated with a clinico-biological monitor

INTRODUCTION: Mental comorbidities, such as phobia, obsessive compulsive symptoms and anxiety disorders, are common in Williams syndrome. However, psychotic symptoms are rare in these patients. We report a case of psychosis in a patient with Williams syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old Caucasian woman with Williams syndrome arrived at the emergency room with persecutory delusions, auditory and verbal hallucinations, soliloquies and psychomotor agitation. These symptoms were consistently present for 2 months. No evidence of other medical illnesses or psychoactive substances was found. T

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 7500. It is caused by a hemizygous deletion of approximately 28 genes on the 7th chromosome (7q11.23), including the elastin allele. Individuals with WS have atypical facial characteristics, including medial eyebrow flair, epicanthal folds, upturned nose, elongated philtrum, and full lips. Infants typically experience constipation and colic. Cardiac and renal abnormalities, as well as hypertension, are common. Individuals with WS are at increased risk for hearing and vision difficulties. Gas

A 59-year-old man presented with a 4-year history of productive cough, shortness of breath and wheeze. He had been treated for asthma and given several courses of antibiotics which improved his symptoms. Medical history was unremarkable. There was no history respiratory disease in childhood although he was prone to chest infections in adult life. A high-resolution chest CT showed marked proximal cystic bronchiectasis associated with collapse of distal bronchi on expiration. A diagnosis of cystic bronchiectasis due to undiagnosed adult Williams-Campbell syndrome was made on the basis of these c

Williams syndrome is caused by the deletion of genetic material from chromosome 7, including the elastin gene. Affected individuals frequently have connective tissue disorders and skeletal hypoplasia, resulting in micrognathia and mandibular retrusion. These conditions hinder adequate visualization of the larynx and render intubation difficult. We used different methods of tracheal intubation for two patients with Williams syndrome. The first case was a 35-year-old woman with micrognathia, mandibular retrusion, and a Mallampati class III airway, scheduled for mitral valve replacement. She had

Applying a recently developed method to analyze gyrification with excellent spatial resolution across thousands of points across the lateral and medial cortical surface, we mapped differences in cortical surface anatomy between subjects with Williams syndrome (WS; n=42) and an age-matched sample of healthy subjects (n=40). WS subjects showed increased gyrification bilaterally in occipital regions and over the cuneus. Differences were more pronounced in the left hemisphere than in the right, with additional regions of increased gyrification in WS in the left precuneus, posterior and anterior ci

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a deletion in the 7q11.23 region which includes at least 17 genes. The presence of autistic features in WS is a controversial issue. While some authors describe WS as the opposite phenotype of autism, recent studies indicate that both share many common characteristics. We report a 12-year-old boy diagnosed as autistic disorder and WS with hemizygosity at the elastin locus and a karyotype of 46,XY,del(7)(q11.21q11.23). Molecular genetic studies have shown that deletion at the elastin gene may account for the cardiovascular abnorm
