Solenopsis richteri (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) alates infected with deformed wing virus display wing deformity with altered mobility.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) has long been identified as a critical pathogen affecting honeybees, contributing to colony losses through wing deformities, neurological impairments, and reduced lifespan. Since DWV also affects other pollinators, it poses a significant threat to global pollination networks. While honeybees have been the focal point of DWV studies, emerging research indicates that this RNA virus is not host-specific but rather a generalist pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of insect species, including other bee species such as bumblebees and solitary bees, as well as wasps a

Quantitative analysis of the morphing wing mechanism of raptors: Bionic design of Falco Peregrinus wing skeleton.

The wing is one of the most important parts of a bird's locomotor system and is the inspiration origination for bionic wing design. During wing motions, the wing shape is closely related to the rotation angles of wing bones. Therefore, the research on the law of bone movement in the process of wing movement can be good guidance for the design of the bionic morphing wing. In this paper, the skeletal posture of the peregrine falcon wing during the extension/flexion is studied to obtain critical data on skeletal posture. Since an elbow joint and a wrist joint rotate correlatively to drive a wing

Butterfly eyespot color pattern formation requires physical contact of the pupal wing epithelium with extracellular materials for morphogenic signal propagation.

BACKGROUND: Eyespot color pattern formation on butterfly wings is sensitive to physical damage and physical distortion as well as physical contact with materials on the surface of wing epithelial tissue at the pupal stage. Contact-mediated eyespot color pattern changes may imply a developmental role of the extracellular matrix in morphogenic signal propagation. Here, we examined eyespot responses to various contact materials, focusing on the hindwing posterior eyespots of the blue pansy butterfly, Junonia orithya. RESULTS: Contact with various materials, including both nonbiological and biolo

Diversification of pre-mating behaviours through temporal reordering of components.

Many biological processes, including mating behaviour, are structured as ordered sequences in which each step enables the next. Diversity of such processes usually arises through the addition or loss of components rather than through changes in their order, since reordering can disrupt functional integration. Here, we show that reordering of the steps associated with termite nuptial pairing can generate behavioural diversity. In most termites, dispersed adults shed their wings before initiating tandem pairing, as wings interfere with communication between females and males. However, we found t

Theoretical morphospace reveals mixed optimisation of the avian wing planform for flight style.

Bird wings exhibit a broad degree of functional and shape variation, though the exact nature of the form-function relationship is uncertain. Recent analysis suggests that functional variability is explained by linear non-shape-based traits and that shape variation is largely explained by phylogeny. We assay the relationship between wing planform shape and functional performance using a theoretical morphospace approach that eschews assumptions of the functional optimality of empirical morphologies. Hypothesised empirical properties are considered post hoc relative to their positions in performa

Insights into the formation and diversification of a novel chiropteran wing membrane from embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: Through the evolution of novel wing structures, bats (Order Chiroptera) became the only mammalian group to achieve powered flight. This achievement preceded the massive adaptive radiation of bats into diverse ecological niches. We investigate some of the developmental processes that underlie the origin and subsequent diversification of one of the novel membranes of the bat wing: the plagiopatagium, which connects the fore- and hind limb in all bat species. RESULTS: Our results suggest that the plagiopatagium initially arises through novel outgrowths from the body flank that subseq

Developmental changes in tibia and humerus of goose: morphometric, densitometric, and mechanical analysis.

The skeletal system of young animals undergoes a series of intensive and rapid changes. In this study, we aimed to verify the hypothesis that geese exhibit a distinct pattern of bone growth compared to gallinaceous species. Specifically, we hypothesised that geese would experience an accelerated growth rate in the humerus bone, which can be attributed to the increased wing mobility facilitated by their rearing in free-range systems. This need for access to both ground and water environments contributes to the unique demands placed on their skeletal development. We focused on evaluating the mec

Heated debate: Is the seasonal polyphenism of the map butterfly Araschnia levana driven by thermoregulation?

The seasonal forms of the temperate butterfly Araschnia levana (Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae) differ in mass, wing area, wing loading (i.e., the ratio of mass to wing area), and colouration. Spring individuals are predominantly orange with higher wing loading while summer individuals are black with a white stripe and have lower wing loading. However, it remains unclear if and how these seasonal differences affect heating and cooling dynamics. We compared thermal responses of seasonal forms, focusing on the roles of morphology and colouration. Further, we assessed whether live butterflies heat and

Changes in blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) wing morphology during succession in rat carcasses across forest and grassland habitats in South Brazil.

Succession is one of the most extensively studied ecological phenomena, yet debates persist about the importance of dispersal and external factors in driving this process. We aimed to quantify the influence of these factors by investigating how wing-related traits evolve across succession of blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) communities in South Brazil. Rat carrion was placed in both forest and grassland habitats, and the associated blowfly communities were documented throughout the decomposition process. Using morphometric analysis, we measured wing and thorax traits and assessed trait changes

Expression Analysis in a Dispersal-Fecundity Polyphenism Identifies Growth Regulators and Effectors.

Polyphenism allows organisms to respond to varying environmental conditions by adopting alternative collections of morphological traits, often leading to different reproductive strategies. In many insects, polyphenism affecting the development of flight trades dispersal ability for increased fecundity. The soapberry bug Jadera haematoloma (Hemiptera: Rhopalidae) exhibits wing polyphenism in response to juvenile nutritional resources and cohort density. Development of full-length wings and flight-capable thoracic muscles occurs more frequently in cohorts raised under low food density conditions

Extensive chondroid bone in juvenile duck limbs hints at accelerated growth mechanism in avian skeletogenesis.

Modern altricial birds are the fastest growing vertebrates, whereas various degrees of precocity (functional maturity) result in slower growth. Diaphyseal osteohistology, the best proxy for inferring relative growth rates in fossils, suggests that in the earliest birds, posthatching growth rates were more variable than in modern representatives, with some showing considerably slow growth that was attributed to their assumed precocial flight abilities. For finding clues how precocial or altricial skeletogenesis and related growth acceleration could be traced in avian evolution, as a case study

Lead acetate does not inhibit dimethylnitrosamine activation and interacts with phenobarbital which is genotoxic in the ST cross of the Drosophila wing spot test.

Lead acetate (PbAc) is known to inhibit the synthesis of the heme group, needed for hemeproteins like Cytochromes P450 (CYP450s). Dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) requires metabolic activation by CYP450s. The Drosophila wing spot test was performed to establish whether PbAc inhibits DMN activation in the standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses, with different levels of CYP450s. Phenobarbital (PH) was used as an antagonist for its ability to induce CYP450s synthesis. PbAc (0.01, 0.1, 1.0mM) produced significant small spots frequencies in the ST cross, indicating a possible genotoxic activity

Spillover of West Caucasian Bat Lyssavirus (WCBV) in a Domestic Cat and Westward Expansion in the Palearctic Region.

In June 2020, a cat from Arezzo (Italy) that died from a neurological disease was diagnosed with West Caucasian Bat Lyssavirus (WCBV). The virus retained high identity across the whole-genome with the reference isolate found in 2002 from a Russian bent-winged bat. We applied control measures recommended by national regulations, investigated a possible interface between cats and bats using visual inspections, bioacoustics analyses and camera trapping and performed active and passive surveillance in bats to trace the source of infection. People that were exposed to the cat received full post-exp

Alcids-like flapping wing for exploring the role of wing folding in underwater locomotion.

Alcids showcase excellent aerial-aquatic locomotion abilities benefitting from the morphing wing. In the aerial environment, alcids fully extend their wings, while underwater, they partly fold the wings. In this article, we mimicked the wing morphology of the alcids family to explore the hydrodynamic advantage of the folded configuration in the aquatic environment and four three-dimensional-printed wings including any combination of with feather or without feather, and extended or folded were created. The steady-state experiment reveals that the extended wings of alcids double the lift, counte

Oh, snap! A within-wing sonation in black-tailed trainbearers.

Vertebrates communicate through a wide variety of sounds, but few mechanisms of sound production, besides vocalization, are well understood. During high-speed dives, male trainbearer hummingbirds (Lesbia spp.) produce a repeated series of loud snaps. Hypotheses for these peculiar sounds include the birds employing their elongated tails and/or striking their wings against each other. Each snap to human ears seems like a single acoustic event, but sound recordings revealed that each snap is actually a couplet of impulsive, atonal sounds produced ∼13 ms apart. Analysis of high-speed videos refute

Cockroaches use diverse strategies to self-right on the ground.

Terrestrial animals often must self-right from an upside-down orientation on the ground to survive. Here, we compared self-righting strategies of the Madagascar hissing, American and discoid cockroaches on a challenging flat, rigid, low-friction surface to quantify the mechanical principles. All three species almost always self-righted (97% probability) when given time (30 s), frequently self-righted (63%) on the first attempt, and on that attempt did so in 1 s or less. When successful, two of the three species gained and used pitch and/or roll rotational kinetic energy to overcome potential e

Beyond aerodynamics: The critical roles of the circulatory and tracheal systems in maintaining insect wing functionality.

Insect wings consist almost entirely of lifeless cuticle; yet their veins host a complex multimodal sensory apparatus and other tissues that require a continuous supply of water, nutrients and oxygen. This review provides a survey of the various living components in insect wings, as well as the specific contribution of the circulatory and tracheal systems to provide all essential substances. In most insects, hemolymph circulates through the veinal network in a loop flow caused by the contraction of accessory pulsatile organs in the thorax. In other insects, hemolymph oscillates into and out of

Co-option of worker organs as indicators of superorganism complexity.

Ant colonies are superorganisms containing a wingless, nonreproductive worker caste. The suppression (loss or reduction) of worker organs involved in mating and reproduction is a feature of many ant superorganisms. It is largely assumed that these worker organs, where present, are functionless and in the process of being eliminated through neutral degeneration or selection. Here, we argue that an underappreciated dimension of social evolution involves the co-option of worker organs to serve superorganism-level functions. We draw on two examples: the wings and ovaries. In some ant species, tran

Self-Assembly of Impact-Resistant and Shape-Recoverable Structures Inspired by Taiwan Rhinoceros Beetles.

Taiwan rhinoceros beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus tsunobosonis) forewings, covered with micrometer-scale sandwich structures, can dissipate impact energies to protect the membranous hindwings underneath. Bioinspired by the forewings, monolayer silica colloidal crystals are self-assembled and utilized as structural templates to engineer sandwich structures, which are supported by nonclose-packed shape memory polymer-based structure arrays. These sandwich structures provide sufficient space for the structural supports to be contorted under external stresses, facilitating the dissipating of impact

Handmade Draping System for Tabletop Microscopes in Wet Lab Training.

BACKGROUND: Wet lab training using a tabletop microscope and chicken wings is an effective way to master superfine surgical techniques, providing a wet environment with real blood vessels that closely replicates surgical conditions. However, concerns remain regarding soiling of expensive microscopes with proteins and blood from raw meat, which can be difficult to remove once dried and may compromise the optical system. Additionally, raw poultry introduces the risk of bacterial contamination such as Campylobacter spp., which is commonly found in retail poultry. Since the practice is often perfo
