Battery-Free, Wireless, Cuff-Type, Multimodal Physical Sensor for Continuous Temperature and Strain Monitoring of Nerve.

Peripheral nerve injuries cause various disabilities related to loss of motor and sensory functions. The treatment of these injuries typically requires surgical operations for improving functional recovery of the nerve. However, capabilities for continuous nerve monitoring remain a challenge. Herein, a battery-free, wireless, cuff-type, implantable, multimodal physical sensing platform for continuous in vivo monitoring of temperature and strain from the injured nerve is introduced. The thin, soft temperature, and strain sensors wrapped around the nerve exhibit good sensitivity, excellent stabi

Quad-Element Implantable MIMO Antenna for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy.

Compared to antennas bearing a single port, MIMO antennas with several ports enable higher data throughput by exploiting spatial diversity. This capability is essential for next-generation implantable medical devices, where high channel capacity is a key requirement. A quad-element implantable MIMO antenna is designed and practically validated at 1420 MHz in this paper. It occupies a compact volume of 7×8×0.1 mm3 (5.6 mm3). The compactness is realized by combining high-permittivity substrate (Rogers 3010 with relative permittivity of 10.2) with meandered radiator paths, which increase the effe

Toward a fully wireless endovascular neural interface: Evaluating power transfer efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular neural interfaces (ENIs) offer a minimally invasive approach for neural stimulation and recording without the need for open brain surgery. However, current generation devices have long transvascular wires from the implant site to the chest. Eliminating these wires will unlock clinical usability, including lowering infection risk from transvascular wires, reducing the risk of thrombosis from altered hemodynamics, and improving mechanical reliability. However, removing these transvascular wires would require efficient power transfer across the skull and tissue while meet

Wireless, skin-interfaced multimodal sensing system for continuous psychophysiological monitoring-A wearable polygraph device.

Accurate, continuous monitoring of psychophysiological states is central to understanding stress and autonomic dysfunction across diverse medical contexts. Current approaches such as polygraphy and polysomnography rely on cumbersome, wired sensors that limit real-world utility and burden patients, particularly vulnerable populations such as infants. Here, we introduce a wireless, skin-interfaced multimodal sensing system capable of simultaneously recording cardiac, respiratory, electrodermal, and thermal signals in a time-synchronized manner. Leveraging compact and soft designs, the technology

An in-body networking system for communication between wearable and implantable therapeutics.

Networks of bioelectronic sensors and actuators enable closed-loop therapies that connect distant, related physiological dynamics. Currently, device interactions are limited by communication methods that inefficiently penetrate tissue and require bulky components. Inspired by the ionic signaling of the nervous system, we engineered a communication platform that uses tissue as a conductive medium to transmit signals among implants and wearables through epidermal, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and gastrointestinal spaces. Devices generate transient electric fields that selectively activate othe

Intelligent routing for human activity recognition in wireless body area networks.

Human activity recognition (HAR), driven by machine learning techniques, offer the detection of diverse activities such as walking, running, and more. Considering the dynamic nature, limited energy and mobility of wireless body area networks (WBANs), HAR can play a significant role in enhancing WBANs performance. This paper genuinely bridges HAR's activity recognition capability using machine learning to develop a novel WBAN routing decisions adoptively. Being optimum in power consumption, we employed Random Forest classification algorithm for activity recognition. The resulted system holds gr

Rapid and on-site wireless immunoassay of respiratory virus aerosols via hydrogel-modulated resonators.

Rapid and accurate detection of respiratory virus aerosols is highlighted for virus surveillance and infection control. Here, we report a wireless immunoassay technology for fast (within 10 min), on-site (wireless and battery-free), and sensitive (limit of detection down to fg/L) detection of virus antigens in aerosols. The wireless immunoassay leverages the immuno-responsive hydrogel-modulated radio frequency resonant sensor to capture and amplify the recognition of virus antigen, and flexible readout network to transduce the immuno bindings into electrical signals. The wireless immunoassay a

Scalable networks of multimodal haptic arrays for plantar sensory substitution.

Feet provide essential sensory input, supporting body awareness for safe movement. The impairment of plantar sensation, arising in conditions such as stroke and spinal cord injury, has a major impact on mobility, balance, and quality of life. Substituting the sensation of plantar pressure to another area on the body with intact somatosensory abilities requires capabilities for fast, programmable delivery of haptic feedback. Here, we introduce a wireless network of skin-conformable, multimodal haptic arrays that deliver high-density thermal and vibrotactile patterns anywhere on the body. Centra

From early wireless to Everest.

Medical information has been transmitted using wireless technologies for almost 80 years. A "wired wireless" electronic stethoscope was developed by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the early 1920's, for potential use in ship-to-shore transmission of cardiac sounds. [Winters SR. Diagnosis by wireless. Scientific American June 11, 1921, p. 465] Today, wireless is used in a wide range of medical applications and at sites from transoceanic air flights to offshore oil platforms to Mt. Everest. 'Wireless LANs' are often used in medical environments. Typically, nurses and physicians in a hospital or cl

A Bimodal Imaging Wireless Capsule Endoscopy System With Precise Linear Magnetic Navigation and Motion-Robust Power Transfer.

Gastric cancer remains a global health challenge with high mortality rates, underscoring the urgent need for advanced diagnostic tools. While conventional gastroscopy encounters patient reluctance due to procedural discomfort, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) provides a non-invasive alternative but faces challenges, including intricate motion control, constrained power supply, and restricted detection capability. This study presents a bimodal imaging WCE system that integrates near-infrared fluorescence and white-light imaging, enhanced with linear magnetic navigation and motion-robust wireles

An Orthogonal Near-Infrared Optical Switch for Wireless Neuromodulation in Freely Behaving Mice.

Modulating neuronal activity with light is a powerful tool for neuroscience research. However, currently available technologies often require invasive fibers for the delivery of visible light, causing tissue damage and limiting behavioral studies. Although near-infrared (NIR) neuronal modulation improves tissue penetration depth, sustained NIR illumination during neuromodulation raises significant concerns about photothermal effects. Here, we introduce a dual-wavelength near-infrared switch (Dual-NIR Switch) that uses two transcranial NIR inputs to initiate and terminate neuronal activation, e

Fully Wireless and Flexible Valves for Multiplexed and Prolonged Intravesical Liquid Release.

Minimally invasive, long-term, and precisely controlled drug delivery is essential for treating bladder diseases such as interstitial cystitis and bladder cancer. However, conventional approaches, including injection-based delivery and indwelling catheters, offer limited controllability, cause patient discomfort, and increase the risk of infection and tissue irritation. Existing intravesical devices further lack active control over drug release, are restricted to single therapeutic agents, and may induce bladder overactivity due to continuous mechanical stimulation. Here, we present a strategy

A Novel Low-Cost Wireless Footwear System for Monitoring Diabetic Foot Patients.

Diabetic foot is one of the main complications of diabetes with the characteristics of high incidence and difficulty in treatment. Diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy may develop foot ulcers, and in severe cases amputations are required and some may even die. Plantar pressure can be used to assess the risk of developing diabetic foot, but the existing plantar pressure monitoring methods are not suitable for long-term monitoring in daily life. This study presents a novel low-cost shoe system for daily monitoring of plantar pressure in diabetics. It includes an insole with pressure sens

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation for Facial Pain Using Wireless Devices.

Since its original introduction several decades ago, peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) of the craniofacial region has been traditionally performed using devices intended for spinal cord stimulation applications with inevitably high rate of technical challenges and procedural complications. The lower invasiveness of recently developed wireless neurostimulation systems makes them much better suited for craniofacial applications. Here, we discuss the preliminary clinical data from several published reports and the ongoing multicenter prospective study of wireless PNS in the craniofacial region.

A new control method depending on primary phase angle of transcutaneous energy transmission system for artificial heart.

A new control method for stabilizing output voltage of the transcutaneous energy transmission system for artificial heart is proposed. This method is primary side, is outside of the body, which is not depending on a signal transmission system from the implanted device. The impedance observed from primary side changes from inductive to capacitive and the output voltage decreases drastically when the output current is large and the coupling factor is higher than that of the optimal condition. In this case, the driving frequency should be changed to higher so that the phase angle of the primary i

Parameter optimization of IPT systems based on genetic algorithms.

Output power and transmission efficiency are key performance indicators for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT). Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) systems feature numerous resonant parameters that are interrelated, making it challenging to determine specific component values during system design. This paper investigates an S-P type IPT system and establishes an equivalent circuit model for the mutual inductance of the contactless transformers. The influence characteristics of coupling coefficient k, resonant angular frequency ω, and equivalent load resistance Re on circuit output power and transmission

Deep Learning-Based GNN-Attention Framework for Near-Field Channel Modeling and Beamforming in Sixth-Generation Wireless Systems: A Simulation Study.

The emergence of sixth-generation (6G) networks has driven the development of Extremely Large Intelligent Metasurfaces (XL-IMS) to deliver ultra-high speeds and high spectral efficiency. Nevertheless, classical far-field channels are not applicable to near-field transmission due to spherical-wave propagation and the lack of spatial stationarity, leading to reduced beamforming performance and increased computational complexity. Therefore, the goal of this research is to develop a method for near-field channel modeling and beamforming optimization based on physics-driven deep learning. The propo

Classification of daily activities using a wireless instrumented insole (WalkinSense) in a semi free-living setting.

BACKGROUND: Accurate monitoring of activities of daily living (ADLs) in real‑world environments is essential for preventive care and rehabilitation, yet it remains difficult to achieve outside controlled laboratory settings. Instrumented insoles provide a promising, unobtrusive solution for continuous monitoring. However, the use of multimodal systems integrating plantar pressure and inertial data in naturalistic conditions and larger cohorts is still limited. This study therefore aims to evaluate the accuracy of a wireless instrumented insole (WalkinSense) that fuses pressure and inertial sen
