Welcome biological breakthroughs, supply psychosocial insights.

Human behaviour, emotions, and cognition are complex to understand and explain. It is even more difficult to understand the basis for abnormal behaviour, disturbed emotions, and impaired cognitions, something mental health professionals are trying for long. In these pursuits, psychiatry has traversed through eras of humours, witchcraft, spirits, psychoanalysis, and gradually deviated from other medical specialities. Now, with recent biological breakthroughs like advances in psychopharmacology, neuroimaging and genetics, increasingly more emphasis is being given to the biological model of psych

Critical Thinking: The ARDESOS-DIAPROVE Program in Dialogue with the Inference to the Best and Only Explanation.

In our daily lives, we are often faced with the need to explain various phenomena, but we do not always select the most accurate explanation. For example, let us consider a "toxic" relationship with physical and psychological abuse, where one of the partners is reluctant to end it. Explanations for this situation can range from emotional or economic dependency to irrational hypotheses such as witchcraft. Surprisingly, some people may turn to the latter explanation and consequently seek ineffective solutions, such as visiting a witch doctor instead of a psychologist. This choice of an inappropr

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) in the Republic of Congo: why the Congolese population is reluctant to screening?

INTRODUCTION: human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical infection, and surveillance of the disease relies on community participation in screening. This study aimed to identify the main factors associated with low community uptake of the HAT screening in endemic districts in the Republic of Congo. METHODS: a cross-sectional survey was carried out during a sensitisation campaign about HAT in the districts of Mpouya, Ngabé and Loudima, which are endemic for the disease. After signing the informed consent form, participants were organized into groups of 10 for focus group discus

Perceptions of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria: Understanding the influence of imagination on health orientation.

The 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak was officially declared in the West Africa region by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 23 March 2014. This first episode of EVD in Nigeria on 20 July 2014 raised more intense panic globally than the seven occurrences of the disease in Zaire. Although Nigeria was declared Ebola free by the WHO within 3 months, it is imperative to understand people's perceptions of the disease in the country. A discussion of peoples' perception of EVD in Nigeria is the aim of this article. This discussion paper complements secondary data with grey literature to ex

Dr. Harold Griffith and Sir Robert Macintosh: a British response to curare's introduction to anesthesia.

Curare's implementation into anesthesia care by Dr. Harold Griffith was facilitated by the availability of medical-grade curare, the demonstration that it could provide safe muscle relaxation in psychiatric patients undergoing "shock therapy," and the foresight of a Squibb scientist who realized its potential in the operating room. Griffith's demonstration that curare safely provided muscle relaxation in surgical patients eliminated the need for dangerously high doses of anesthetic gases. This helped pave the way to "balanced anesthesia," whereby small doses of selectively acting drugs are giv

Male genital mutilation (amputation) and its complications: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Genital losses from ritual attacks are often reported in the media and often discussed in the social media but are hardly reported in medical literature. Male genital mutilation (MGM) refers to permanent modification of the external genitalia that involves ablation of genital tissues. When found, it is usually as a consequence of poor circumcision skills, auto mutilation/castration or genital injuries caused by attacks or accidents. Male circumcision on its own is widely regarded as a rather safe and acceptable practice which is known to have some health benefits and in keeping with

Acute renal failure following the use of herbal remedies.

Acute renal failure (ARF) complicated the use of traditional herbal remedies in six adult patients seen at Kenyatta National Hospital in a 2-year period (August 1984 to August 1986). This comprised 10.9% of all the cases of ARF and 24% of the cases of ARF due to medical causes. All the patients were oliguric and the period of oliguria in the four patients who survived ranged between 19-57 days (mean 26.3 days). Five of the patients had evidence of fluid overload. The blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine were elevated in all the patients. The serum sodium was normal in all, while the serum

Communities' Perception, Knowledge, and Practices Related to Human African Trypanosomiasis in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: The number of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has significantly reduced, thanks to more effective drugs and screening tools and regular mass screening. However, this potentially jeopardizes HAT control activities, especially community engagement. METHODS: We used an ecological model framework to understand how various factors shape communities' knowledge, perceptions, and behavior in this low endemicity context. Community members, frontline health providers, and policymakers were consulted using an ethnographic approach. RESULTS

Drug toxicity and cost as barriers to community participation in HAT control in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

INTRODUCTION: Active case-finding programmes by mobile teams are the cornerstone of West African Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) control. Low attendance rates of screening and low uptake of treatment after diagnosis are major problems. The objectives of this survey were to explore community perception of HAT, to assess acceptability of control activities and to identify barriers amenable to intervention. METHODS: In September 2004, we conducted 33 focus group discussions with beneficiaries of the HAT control programme among various ethnic groups in two ecological settings (savannah and fl

Paranormal phenomena in the medical literature sufficient smoke to warrant a search for fire.

Paranormal phenomena - events that cannot be explained by existing science - are regularly reported in medicine. Surveys have shown that a majority of the population of the United States and Great Britain hold at least one paranormal belief. Information was retrieved by MEDLINE searches using keywords 'paranormal' and 'psychic', and from the author's own collection. Reports are predominantly by physicians, and from peer-reviewed, MEDLINE-indexed literature. This is a representative sample, as there is no database for paranormal medical phenomena. Presented and discussed are: a case of systemic

Dissociative experience and cultural neuroscience: narrative, metaphor and mechanism.

Approaches to trance and possession in anthropology have tended to use outmoded models drawn from psychodynamic theory or treated such dissociative phenomena as purely discursive processes of attributing action and experience to agencies other than the self. Within psychology and psychiatry, understanding of dissociative disorders has been hindered by polemical "either/or" arguments: either dissociative disorders are real, spontaneous alterations in brain states that reflect basic neurobiological phenomena, or they are imaginary, socially constructed role performances dictated by interpersonal

"I think there is a certain worm that disturbs the head": Community perspectives and care pathways for psychosis in Malawi.

Psychosis remains a significant global health challenge, with people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Malawi disproportionately impacted. Yet, little is known about community perspectives, treatment-seeking practices, and acceptable pathways for psychosis management. This study explored diverse community perspectives of psychosis to inform the development of a community-based psychosis detection and management system. This exploratory qualitative study was conducted in Malawi's Salima and Chiradzulu districts between October and December 2023. Seventy-six participants, includin

Perinatal distress and depression in Malawi: an exploratory qualitative study of stressors, supports and symptoms.

Quantitative studies have demonstrated that depression and anxiety in the perinatal period are common amongst women in low- and middle-income countries and are associated with a range of psychosocial and health-related stressors. In this exploratory qualitative study conducted in southern Malawi, we investigated the thoughts and emotions experienced by women in pregnancy and the postnatal period, their expectations of support from husband and others, problems and difficulties faced and the impact of these on psychological wellbeing. We conducted 11 focus group discussions with a total of 98 pa
