Hunting practices increase the prevalence of Trichinella infection in wolves from European Russia.

From 1998 to 2000, 184 animals (82 wolves, 29 red foxes, 55 mustelids, 5 raccoon dogs, and 13 domestic dogs), mainly shot by hunters in the Tvier and Smoliensk regions of northwest European Russia, were tested for Trichinella larvae; 98 animals (53.3%) were found to be positive. The highest prevalence was detected in wolf (97.5%). Trichinella nativa was the most common species detected (98%). The diet of wolves was investigated by examining the stomach contents of 62 animals (75.6% of the total number of wolves examined for Trichinella). It consisted mainly of dog (36.4% of the total number of

Signatures of Radiation-Induced Stress and Putative Selection on Immune Targets in Chornobyl Wolves.

Investigating the physiological and evolutionary consequences of contaminant exposure in wild populations is critical for understanding long-term ecological impacts of anthropogenic change. However, how and why species persist, even thrive, in highly contaminated regions in the absence of humans remains a topic of much debate. We examined the regulatory and genomic impacts of multigenerational chronic radiation exposure to grey wolves (Canis lupus) within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Wolves within the exclusion zone are at an estimated seven times greater density than surrounding preserves, d

Diagnostic and Treatment of Spinal Fracture and Luxation in Italian Wolves (Canis lupus italicus).

The medical records of 14 Italian wolves (Canis lupus italicus) with a vertebral fracture or luxation (SFL) between C1 and L7 treated at Ospedale Veterinario San Michele from 2017 and 2022 were reviewed. The most common cause of SFL was "road traffic accident". Neurological signs were graded from 0 to 6 using a modified Frankel scale. Spinal fractures occurred in C1-C5 in 1 case, in T3-L3 in 11 cases and in L4-L7 in 2 cases. Six wolves were euthanized without treatment because they presented paraplegia without deep pain perception (DPP). Two animals with motor function were treated conservativ

A SEROSURVEY OF DISEASES OF FREE-RANGING GRAY WOLVES (CANIS LUPUS) IN MINNESOTA, USA.

We tested serum samples from 387 free-ranging wolves ( Canis lupus ) from 2007 to 2013 for exposure to eight canid pathogens to establish baseline data on disease prevalence and spatial distribution in Minnesota's wolf population. We found high exposure to canine adenoviruses 1 and 2 (88% adults, 45% pups), canine parvovirus (82% adults, 24% pups), and Lyme disease (76% adults, 39% pups). Sixty-six percent of adults and 36% of pups exhibited exposure to the protozoan parasite Neospora caninum . Exposure to arboviruses was confirmed, including West Nile virus (37% adults, 18% pups) and eastern

A gene expression signature of confinement in peripheral blood of red wolves (Canis rufus).

The stresses that animals experience as a result of modification of their ecological circumstances induce physiological changes that leave a signature in profiles of gene expression. We illustrate this concept in a comparison of free range and confined North American red wolves (Canis rufus). Transcription profiling of peripheral blood samples from 13 red wolf individuals in the Alligator River region of North Carolina revealed a strong signal of differentiation. Four hundred eighty-two out of 2980 transcripts detected on Illumina HumanRef8 oligonucleotide bead arrays were found to differentia

Physiological response of gray wolves to butorphanol-xylazine immobilization and antagonism by naloxone and yohimbine.

Captive gray wolves (Canis lupus) were immobilized (loss of consciousness) with 2.0 mg/kg xylazine hydrochloride (XYL) and 0.4 mg/kg butorphanol tartrate (BUT) administered intramuscularly. Induction time was 11.8 +/- 0.8 min (mean +/- SE). Immobilization resulted in bradycardia, respiratory depression, and normotension. Fifteen min after induction, six wolves were given either 0.05 mg/kg naloxone hydrochloride (NAL) and 0.125 or 0.250 mg/kg yohimbine hydrochloride (YOH), or an equal volume of saline (control) intravenously. Antagonism resulted in shortened recovery times compared to control a

Perception Toward Wolves Are Driven by Economic Status and Religion Across Their Distribution Range.

Effective conservation of large mammals depends on how people perceive them. Grey wolves have a widespread distribution globally, and their recent recolonization of human-dominated landscapes offers an excellent opportunity to understand the heterogeneity in their perception across continents. Our analysis included all quantitative studies (118 articles) conducted in 35 countries through a systematic review process, published globally between 1980-2023 and indexed in Web of Science and Google Scholar. Fifty-four percent of the studies reported a negative perception toward wolves. Most studies

Extended survival of Pleistocene Siberian wolves into the early 20th century on the island of Honshū.

The Japanese or Honshū wolf was one the most distinct gray wolf subspecies due to its small stature and endemicity to the islands of Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū. Long revered as a guardian of farmers and travellers, it was persecuted from the 17th century following a rabies epidemic, which led to its extinction in the early 20th century. To better understand its evolutionary history, we sequenced the nuclear genome of a 19th century Honshū wolf specimen to an average depth of coverage of 3.7✕. We find Honshū wolves were closely related to a lineage of Siberian wolves that were previously belie

Seasonal and biogeographical patterns of gastrointestinal parasites in large carnivores: wolves in a coastal archipelago.

Parasites are increasingly recognized for their profound influences on individual, population and ecosystem health. We provide the first report of gastrointestinal parasites in gray wolves from the central and north coasts of British Columbia, Canada. Across 60 000 km(2), wolf feces were collected from 34 packs in 2005-2008. At a smaller spatial scale (3300 km(2)), 8 packs were sampled in spring and autumn. Parasite eggs, larvae, and cysts were identified using standard flotation techniques and morphology. A subset of samples was analysed by PCR and sequencing to identify tapeworm eggs (n=9) a

The influence of social and endocrine factors on urine-marking by captive wolves (Canis lupus).

Although serum hormones varied seasonally in all adult animals, only dominant male and female wolves urine-marked. Serum testosterone and urine-marking rates, which increased during the fall/winter breeding season, were positively correlated in both male and female dominant wolves. Estradiol, which increased in conjunction with proestrus and estrus, was not correlated with female urine-marking. These findings suggest that hormonal influence on urine-marking in the wolf is modulated by social factors and contrast with those for both domestic dogs and coyotes, two other members of the genus Cani

Parasite diversity in grey wolves (Canis lupus) from Tuscany, central Italy: a copromicroscopical investigation.

Parasite monitoring is considered an important issue for wildlife conservation as well as for veterinary and public health. In Italy, data on endoparasites of the grey wolf (Canis lupus) are still limited. A copro-microscopical study was performed to investigate endoparasites of grey wolf communities in three Apennine natural reserves and a hilly area in northern Tuscany, central Italy. A total of 66 fresh faecal samples were collected and examined using the Mini-FLOTAC technique with a high-density flotation solution. Apparent prevalence and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were estimated for e

Physiological impacts of housing maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) with female relatives or unrelated males.

The maned wolf is a threatened canid species native to South America. Previous studies have suggested the species exhibits induced ovulation. In captive breeding facilities, reproductive success is low while rates of neonatal mortality are high. Females that are not recommended for breeding are frequently housed together. However there has never been a systematic study of the reproductive consequences of co-housing females. This study was conducted for three purposes, to: (1) corroborate the presence of induced ovulation, (2) determine whether elevated cortisol is implicated in neonatal pup mo

Adenovirus, herpesvirus, and parvovirus survey in Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus) of Cantabria, Spain.

The study of infectious diseases in wild carnivores is essential to their conservation. Adenovirus, herpesvirus and parvovirus are DNA viruses able to cause severe disease in carnivores; however, data on their occurrence in Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus) are limited. Herein, 130 spleen samples from Iberian wolves in Cantabria, northern Spain, were tested for these viruses using broad-range nested PCRs and real time PCR. All positive amplicons were confirmed by direct Sanger sequencing in both directions. Additionally, exposure to adenovirus and Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 (CCPV1) was ev

Osteochondrosis Manifesta in Three Related Free-Ranging Gray Wolves (Canis lupus lupus) in Switzerland.

Osteochondrosis is a common disease that has been described in several farm and pet species as well as in some wildlife species, including captive roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus), a giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), snow leopard (Panthera uncia), and free-ranging wild boar (Sus scrofa ferus). It has not previously been confirmed in gray wolves (Canis lupus lupus). Postmortem radiographs of three free-ranging, juvenile sibling wolves revealed osteochondrosis in at least one of the glenohumeral joints (GHJs) in all individuals. Whole-body computed tomography and computed tomograph

Trichinella spp. in wolves (Canis lupus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) of southern Italy.

Trichinella spp. are cosmopolitan parasites that infect a wide range of hosts, with wildlife being the main reservoir of these zoonotic nematodes, especially red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and wolves (Canis lupus) due to their apex position in the food chain in most European countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of Trichinella spp. in these wild canids and their epidemiological role in the Campania region (southern Italy). From 2017 to 2023, the carcasses of red foxes (n = 352) and wolves (n = 41) were collected as part of a health surveillance plan. Muscle samples were

Characteristics of reproductive organs and reproductive potential in Scandinavian female grey wolves (Canis lupus).

The Swedish wolf population is closely monitored and managed to keep the population at a sustainable level while avoiding conflicts. Detailed knowledge about reproduction is crucial for estimates of population size and the reproductive potential of a population. Post-mortem evaluation of reproductive organs can be used as a complementary tool to field monitoring for evaluation of cyclicity and previous pregnancy, including litter size. Therefore, we evaluated reproductive organs from 154 female wolves that were necropsied during the period 2007-2018. The reproductive organs were weighed, measu

Post-inflammatory polyps and risk of dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease: Wolves in sheep's clothing?

Patients with longstanding and extensive inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an enhanced risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), which accounts for up to 10% of all IBD-related deaths. Chronicity of bowel inflammation, co-existence of primary sclerosing cholangitis, and a family history of sporadic colorectal cancer represent further risk factors for development of CRC. Colon post-inflammatory polyps are believed to be another risk factor for IBD-associated CRC, even though it remains unclear how presence of such lesions could influence CRC development. Although earlier observational studies sugges
