Frontal network syndrome testing: clinical tests and positron emission tomography brain imaging help distinguish the 3 most common dementia subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Dementia diagnosis and the various subtypes are challenging in the absence of biomarkers. AIM: To examine available tests and neuroimaging procedures that may help distinguish these disorders. METHODS: Alzheimer's disease (AD), cognitive vascular disorder (CVD), and Frontotemporal lobe disorders (FTLD) were tested with a hierarchical neuropsychological battery that included the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale, Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test, and subtests. All patients had multimodality magnetic resonance imaging and (18)F fluorodeoxyglucose-posit

Eye tracking and machine learning to assess cognitive impairment in post-COVID-19 patients.

This study investigates whether oculomotor dysfunction in individuals with post-COVID-19 condition can serve as a biomarker for cognitive impairment as demonstrated in other neurological conditions. Eye movement metrics, including fixation, saccades, and smooth pursuit, as well as pupil size changes, were recorded using an eye tracker. Cognitive performance was assessed through established neuropsychological tests: Digit Symbol Test, Digit Span Backward, Trail Making Test (TMT), Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT), together with the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT) for phonological

Comparison of Cognitive Functions among Bilinguals and Multilinguals.

BACKGROUND: Language is one of the most fundamental aspects of any society. It is how individuals communicate with one another, form relationships and foster a feeling of community. Language processing is one of the most common, yet complex, tasks we perform regularly. Being multilingual facilitates effective communication and such people are better problem solvers. The benefits of multilingualism extend beyond the capacity to communicate in another language and provide individuals with a broader perspective of the world. This study aims to assess the cognitive functions of bilinguals and mult

Lack of a benign interpretation bias in social anxiety disorder.

Cognitive models of social anxiety posit that recurrent interpretation of ambiguous information as threatening maintains symptoms (e.g. Clark & Wells, 1995, pp. 69-93, Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment, and treatment. New York: Guilford Press; Rapee & Heimberg, 1997, pp. 741-756, Behavior Research and Therapy, 35). However, biased interpretation may also be represented as a failure to make a benign interpretation of the ambiguous event. Furthermore, interpretation bias can be characterized by both an online (automatic) component and an offline (effortful) component (Hirsch & Clark, 2004, pp

Neuropsychological dissociation between recognition familiarity and perceptual priming in visual long-term memory.

The present study examined whether the same brain region mediates visual-perceptual repetition priming and a familiarity component of visual recognition memory. In two experiments, familiarity-based recognition was measured in an individual (M.S.) with impaired visual repetition priming due to a lesion of right occipital cortex. In both experiments, M.S. demonstrated intact recognition familiarity despite his visual nondeclarative memory impairment. These results converge with other behavioral results to indicate that recognition familiarity does not depend on the same memory system that media

Modularity and granularity across the language network-A primary progressive aphasia perspective.

Tests of grammar, repetition and semantics were administered to 62 prospectively enrolled right-handed participants with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Structural brain images were obtained at the time of testing. Regression analyses uncovered 3 clearly delineated non-overlapping left hemisphere clusters where cortical thinning (atrophy) was significantly correlated with impaired performance. A morphosyntactic cluster associated with the grammaticality of sentence construction was located predominantly within the middle and inferior frontal gyri; a phonolexical cluster associated with lang

DCDC2 genetic variants and susceptibility to developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE(S): Developmental dyslexia is a heritable condition, with genetic factors accounting for 44-75% of the variance in performance tests of reading component subphenotypes. Compelling genetic linkage and association evidence supports a quantitative trait locus in the 6p21.3 region that encodes a gene called DCDC2. In this study, we explored the contribution of two DCDC2 markers to dyslexia, related reading and memory phenotypes in nuclear families of Italian origin. METHODS: The 303 nuclear families recruited on the basis of having a proband with developmental dyslexia have been studied

The enhancement of beneficial effects following audio feedback by cognitive preparation in the treatment of social anxiety: a single-session experiment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: According to cognitive models, negatively biased processing of the publicly observable self is an important aspect of social phobia; if this is true, effective methods for producing corrective feedback concerning the public self should be strived for. Video feedback is proven effective, but since one's voice represents another aspect of the self, audio feedback should produce equivalent results. This is the first study to assess the enhancement of audio feedback by cognitive preparation in a single-session randomized controlled experiment. METHOD: Forty socially anx

Association of SNPs of DYX1C1 with developmental dyslexia in an Indian population.

OBJECTIVE: DYX1C1 has been identified as a susceptible candidate gene for developmental dyslexia (DD); studies in various populations have yielded inconclusive results and the causal allele is unknown in the Indian population. On the basis of the initial association studies and the role of DYX1C1 in neuronal migration, we investigated the role of DYX1C1 in causing DD in an Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of DYX1C1 were genotyped in 210 cases with DD and 256 age-matched nondyslexic controls. Genotyping of these SNPs was carried with the Mass

Cultural and Sex-Related Differences in Free-Word Associations with "Sweets": A Multinational Online Study.

Background: Free-word association (FWA) captures the most accessible lexical responses to a stimulus, providing a window into automatic cognitive representations of food categories that may differ across cultures and between sexes. Objectives: To examine whether the dominant cognitive associations evoked by the word "sweets" differ across three language groups (Hungarian, English, Spanish), whether they vary by sex, and whether they relate to body mass index (BMI) and self-reported eating disorder risk. Methods: A total of 1349 participants completed an online survey including a single FWA pro

Cognitive functioning in Behçet's disease.

The impact of Behçet's disease on higher cognitive functions is still poorly understood. We proposed (1) to characterize the neuropsychological profile of Behçet's disease patients with (Neuro-BD) and without (BD) neurological manifestations; (2) to identify which clinical, psychopathological, and genetic variables are related to neuropsychological performance; and (3) to explore the association between cognitive functioning and neuroimaging findings in BD patients. Fifteen Neuro-BD and 35 BD patients in the nonactive phase of their illness underwent a neurological examination, performed a com

Neuropsychological function in relation to serum parathyroid hormone and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The Tromsø study.

There are receptors for parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the brain, and there are clinical and experimental data indicating that PTH and vitamin D may affect cerebral function. In the present study 21 subjects who both in the 5th Tromsø study and at a follow-up examination fulfilled criteria for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) without renal failure (serum calcium < 2.40 mmol/L, serum PTH > 6.4 pmol/L, and normal serum creatinine) and 63 control subjects were compared with tests for cognitive and emotional function. Those in the SHPT group had significantly impaired

Cognitive effects of topiramate, gabapentin, and lamotrigine in healthy young adults.

OBJECTIVE: To study the acute and steady-state cognitive effects of three new antiepileptic drugs (AEDs): gabapentin, lamotrigine, and topiramate. BACKGROUND: Several newer antiepileptic medications approved recently by the Food and Drug Administration are gaining attention as efficacious alternatives to established AEDs. Greater tolerability with fewer side effects are reported in some. However, the potential cognitive effects of these newer AEDs have received limited attention. METHODS: Healthy young adults randomized to either of the three drugs were administered tests of attention, psych
