Orthographic and phonological processing in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex during Chinese word reading.

The left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (lvOT) has been consistently identified as a crucial structure in word reading, and its function varies across subregions. Nevertheless, the specific function of the lvOT and its subregions remains controversial because the obvious grapheme-to-phoneme correspondence rules of alphabetic languages make it difficult to disentangle the contributions of orthography and phonology to neural activations. To explore information processing in lvOT subregions, the present study manipulated the orthography and phonology in a factorial design and used the fMRI rapid

Neural patterns of word processing differ in children with dyslexia and isolated spelling deficit.

There is an ongoing debate concerning the extent to which deficits in reading and spelling share cognitive components and whether they rely, in a similar fashion, on sublexical and lexical pathways of word processing. The present study investigates whether the neural substrates of word processing differ in children with various patterns of reading and spelling deficits. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we compared written and auditory processing in three groups of 9-13-year olds (N = 104): (1) with age-adequate reading and spelling skills; (2) with reading and spelling deficits (i.

Whole-object effects in visual word processing: Parallels with and differences from face recognition.

Visual words and faces differ in their structural properties, but both are objects of high expertise. Holistic processing is said to characterize expert face recognition, but the extent to which whole-word processes contribute to word recognition is unclear, particularly as word recognition is thought to proceed by a component-based process. We review the evidence for experimental effects in word recognition that parallel those used to support holistic face processing, namely inversion effects, the part-whole task, and composite effects, as well as the status of whole-word processing in pure a

The Training of Morphological Decomposition in Word Processing and Its Effects on Literacy Skills.

This study set out to examine the effects of a morpheme-based training on reading and spelling in fifth and sixth graders (N = 47), who present poor literacy skills and speak German as a second language. A computerized training, consisting of a visual lexical decision task (comprising 2,880 items, presented in 12 sessions), was designed to encourage fast morphological analysis in word processing. The children were divided between two groups: the one underwent a morpheme-based training, in which word-stems of inflections and derivations were presented for a limited duration, while their pre- an

Neural correlates of priming effects in children during spoken word processing with orthographic demands.

Priming effects were examined in 40 children (9-15 years old) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). An orthographic judgment task required participants to determine if two sequentially presented spoken words had the same spelling for the rime. Four lexical conditions were designed: similar orthography and phonology (O(+)P(+)), similar orthography but different phonology (O(+)P(-)), similar phonology but different orthography (O(-)P(+)), and different orthography and phonology (O(-)P(-)). In left superior temporal gyrus, there was lower activation for targets in O(+)P(+) than for

Altered hemispheric asymmetry during word processing in dyslexic children: an event-related potential study.

The present event-related potential study aimed at finding neurophysiological correlates of inadequate reading performances in developmental dyslexia. By using the same set of words in different linguistic tasks, we found variations of cortical asymmetry between dyslexic individuals and controls starting with the N420, a component supposed to index the phonological processing during reading. Whereas in controls this component was left lateralized, in disabled readers it was more distributed across hemispheres. The observed lack of lateralization in dyslexic individuals was also found in the la

Residual differences in language processing in compensated dyslexics revealed in simple word reading tasks.

Using regional cerebral blood flow as an index of cerebral activity we studied dyslexic and control subjects during simple word reading tasks. The groups were pre-tested for reading skill and the dyslexic group had a lower reading performance but could read and comprehend standard texts. The aim was to elucidate differences in the cerebral activation pattern during reading. The tasks were simple enough that performance differences between the groups could be excluded. We found specific differences between the two groups that were dependent on the language task. When the visual route for langua

Lexical and semantic processing in the absence of word reading: evidence from neglect dyslexia.

Nine patients with left-sided neglect and nine matched control patients performed three tasks on horizontal (either normal or mirror-reversed) letter strings. The tasks were: reading aloud, making a lexical decision (word vs non-word), and making a semantic decision (living vs non-living item). Relative to controls, neglect patients performed very poorly in the reading task, whereas they performed nearly normally in the lexical and semantic tasks. This was considered to be a dissociation between direct tasks, rather than a dissociation between explicit and implicit knowledge. The explanation o

Cerebral lateralization of frontal lobe language processes and lateralization of the posterior visual word processing system.

The brain areas involved in visual word processing rapidly become lateralized to the left cerebral hemisphere. It is often assumed this is because, in the vast majority of people, cortical structures underlying language production are lateralized to the left hemisphere. An alternative hypothesis, however, might be that the early stages of visual word processing are lateralized to the left hemisphere because of intrinsic hemispheric differences in processing low-level visual information as required for distinguishing fine-grained visual forms such as letters. If the alternative hypothesis was c

Effects of depression status and genetic risk on emotional word processing in a large cohort.

Depression has been linked to a negative bias in emotional perception, with patients frequently showing more negative valence and higher arousal ratings of emotional stimuli, such as words and images. Nevertheless, studies in large depression cohorts which also incorporate longitudinal and genetic data are lacking. We investigated the effects of depression on valence and arousal ratings of emotional words at two time points in 1392 participants of the BiDirect Study, a German cohort enriched in patients that were hospitalized due to an acute depressive episode at the time of recruitment. Data

Letter and Word Processing in Developmental Dyslexia: Evidence from a Two-Alternative Forced Choice Task.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to investigate letter processing in children with dyslexia and typically developing readers as a function of the type of orthographic context. METHODS AND RESULTS: In Experiment 1A, children performed a two-alternative forced choice task (Reicher-Wheeler paradigm) using as probes either high-frequency words, pronounceable pseudo-words, or unpronounceable non-words. The group differences in letter recognition were clearly distinguished from those present in typical word and pseudo-word reading conditions (Experiment 1B), as a global factor was pre

Early Top-Down Modulation in Visual Word Form Processing: Evidence From an Intracranial SEEG Study.

Visual word recognition, at a minimum, involves the processing of word form and lexical information. Opinions diverge on the spatiotemporal distribution of and interaction between the two types of information. Feedforward theory argues that they are processed sequentially, whereas interactive theory advocates that lexical information is processed fast and modulates early word form processing. To distinguish between the two theories, we applied stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) to 33 human adults with epilepsy (25 males and eight females) during visual lexical decisions. The stimuli included

Psycholinguistic effects, types of impairments and processing levels in word production: Can we reduce confusions?

This commentary highlights three common difficulties faced by the literature that aims to specify models of speech production based on the performance of aphasic speakers, taking as a springboard a recent study by Mailend et al. These include: (1) difficulties with theoretical assumptions which linki psycholinguistic effects unequivocally to one processing level; (2) difficulties using clinical classifications to localize experimental effects; (3) difficulties making theoretical inferences given the controversial nature of the representations that characterize different processing levels. We a

Two-character Chinese compound word processing in Chinese children with and without dyslexia: ERP evidence.

Using event-related potential (ERP) measures, we examined the time course of Chinese compound word processing in 15 dyslexic and 10 normal children in a lexical decision task with three conditions including real words (e.g.,[Formula: see text] (house)), reversed nonwords (e.g.,[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] can be transposed to a real word [Formula: see text](ocean)) and random nonwords (e.g.,[Formula: see text] is not a real word when transposing). Behavioral results showed that dyslexic children performed slower and less accurately than normal children did across conditions. ERP data

Is "hit and run" a single word? The processing of irreversible binomials in neglect dyslexia.

The present study is the first neuropsychological investigation into the problem of the mental representation and processing of irreversible binomials (IBs), i.e., word pairs linked by a conjunction (e.g., "hit and run," "dead or alive"). In order to test their lexical status, the phenomenon of neglect dyslexia is explored. People with left-sided neglect dyslexia show a clear lexical effect: they can read IBs better (i.e., by dropping the leftmost words less frequently) when their components are presented in their correct order. This may be taken as an indication that they treat these construc

Pubertal changes in emotional information processing: pupillary, behavioral, and subjective evidence during emotional word identification.

This study investigated pupillary and behavioral responses to an emotional word valence identification paradigm among 32 pre-/early pubertal and 34 mid-/late pubertal typically developing children and adolescents. Participants were asked to identify the valence of positive, negative, and neutral words while pupil dilation was assessed using an eyetracker. Mid-/late pubertal children showed greater peak pupillary reactivity to words presented during the emotional word identification task than pre-/early pubertal children, regardless of word valence. Mid-/late pubertal children also showed small

Foveal crowding in posterior cortical atrophy: a specific early-visual-processing deficit affecting word reading.

Visual crowding is a form of masking in which single-letter identification is compromised by the presence of additional letters or other simple visual forms in close proximity. This behavioural phenomenon has been studied most frequently in the context of amblyopic and normal peripheral vision. In the current study, we investigate this phenomenon in the context of two patients with peripheral dyslexia and a third with visual disorientation consequent to bilateral posterior cortical atrophy. In one case, reading showed the effects of word length typical of letter-by-letter reading, whereas the

Recovery of semantic word processing in transcortical sensory aphasia: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

In a previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study with normal subjects, we demonstrated regions related to conceptual-semantic word processing around the first frontal sulcus (BA 9) and the posterior parietal lobe (BA 7/40) in agreement with several previous reports. We had the possibility, using the same fMRI paradigm, to study two consecutive cases with left middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction (RC and HP) and lesions affecting either solely the pre-frontal (HP) or both the pre-frontal and posterior parietal part of the network activated in normal subjects (RC). A positron emission tomographic study of impaired word recognition and phonological processing in dyslexic men.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dyslexia is characterized by impaired word recognition, which is thought to result from deficits in phonological processing. Improvements during the course of development are thought to disproportionately involve orthographic components of reading; phonological deficits persist into adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To localize the neural correlates of impaired word recognition and phonological processing in men with developmental dyslexia. METHODS: Regional cerebral blood flow was measured with oxygen 15 positron emission tomography in 17 men with dyslexia and in 14 matched co

From perceiving words to reading: Neural multivariate representations of sublexical vs. lexico-semantic processing during word-reading.

While the neural underpinnings of semantic cognition have been extensively studied, the brain mechanisms that allow the extraction of meaning from the initially perceptual visual linguistic input are less understood. These mechanisms have typically been explored through the analysis of psycholinguistic properties that reflect key aspects of semantic processing (e.g., word frequency, familiarity or concreteness), and more recently, through natural language processing (NLP) models. However, both approaches lack a direct comparison of sublexical (i.e., phonological and orthographic) and lexico-se
