How does attention training work in social phobia: disengagement from threat or re-engagement to non-threat?

Social phobics exhibit an attentional bias for threat in probe detection paradigms. Attention training, whereby probes always replace non-threat in a display presenting both threat and non-threat, reduces attentional bias for threat and social anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether therapeutic benefits result from learning to disengage attention from threat or learning to orient attention towards non-threat. In this experiment, social phobics were randomly assigned to one of four training conditions: (1) disengagement from threat, (2) engagement towards non-threat, (3) disengagement from

Workplace Stressors and Work Engagement Among Married Nurses: The Roles of Psychological Distress and Perceived Partner Responsiveness.

Background/Objectives: Understanding threats to nurses' work engagement is important for workforce stability, care quality, and nurses' well-being. We examined whether organizational dehumanization and patient/family incivility were indirectly associated with lower work engagement through psychological distress and whether perceived partner responsiveness moderated the distress-engagement association. Methods: Three-wave survey data were collected from 325 married nurses at one-week intervals. Workplace stressors were measured at Time 1, psychological distress and perceived partner responsiven

Authentic leadership and organizational citizenship behavior: the mediating role of work engagement in a Confucian cultural context.

INTRODUCTION: In contemporary higher education, particularly within Confucian cultural contexts characterized by high power distance and hierarchical structures, leadership plays a critical role in fostering positive employee behaviors. Despite growing interest in authentic leadership, limited research has examined its influence on organizational citizenship behavior in non-Western settings, especially considering underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between authentic leadership and organizational citizenship behavior, w

Racialized Migrant Transgender Women Engaged in Sex Work: Double Binds and Identifications with the Community.

Racialized migrant transgender women engaged in sex work represent an understudied population. They face unique challenges resulting from their multiple marginalized identities, such as racialized transmisogyny. Since marginalized communities play a vital role in mitigating systemic stigma, it is essential to expand the literature on the community of this population. The present study used the frameworks of gender minority stress and intersectionality, along with a decolonial and transfeminist approach. Twenty participants aged between 28 and 66 years old (M = 43.15; SD = 10.49) took part in a

Failure to engage spatial working memory contributes to age-related declines in visuomotor learning.

It is well documented that both cognitive and motor learning abilities decline with normative aging. Given that cognitive processes such as working memory are engaged during the early stages of motor learning [Anguera, J., Reuter-Lorenz, P., Willingham, D., & Seidler, R. Contributions of spatial working memory to visuomotor learning. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 22(9), 1917-1930, 2010], age-related declines in motor learning may be due in part to reductions in cognitive ability. The present study examined whether age-related declines in spatial working memory (SWM) contribute to deficits

[Atherosclerosis of the major extra- and intracranial cerebral arteries in persons engaged in physical and intellectual work].

The authors conducted a visual-planimetric study of the magistral arteries, supplying the brain in 152 deceased individuals, where the intensity of atherosclerosis was studied in comparison to people of physical and intellectual work. The compared groups were identical for sex, age and the main disease. In people of physical work the intracranial arteries demonstrate either no changes or only lipoid spots in them. In people of intellectual work there were fibrous plaques. In extracranial arteries there were no differences in the frequency of atherosclerotic changes in the compared groups. The

[Types of hyperlipoproteinemia in young persons with ischemic heart diseases engaged in strenuous mental work].

The results subsequent to an examination of 250 males aged 30-47 suffering from ischemic heart disease and doing strenous mental work are presented. Two variants were used in phenotyping: the first was based on not too high criteria for the cholesterol and triglycerides level (250 and 140 mg%, respectively), the second one having as a groundwork upper limits of the normal value estimated by the authors (250 and 190 mg%, respectively). It was found that, depending upon the actual value of the upper normal limit for triglycerides hyperlipidemia is demonstrable in 64 or 56% of the males. Of most

Orff Schulwerk in Chinese primary music classrooms: a qualitative study of teachers' teaching self-efficacy and work engagement.

INTRODUCTION: While primary school music teachers in China increasingly integrate Orff Schulwerk into their classroom practice, little qualitative research has examined how teachers themselves describe its relationship to their teaching self-efficacy and work engagement. METHODS: Drawing on self-efficacy theory and the Job Demands-Resources model as sensitizing frameworks, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 primary school music teachers in Shandong Province, China, who regularly enacted Orff Schulwerk or Orff-inspired activities. Interview data were analyzed through induc

Productive employment and decent work: The impact of AI adoption on psychological contracts, job engagement and employee trust.

This research examines the tension between the aims of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), to promote productive employment and decent work, and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Our findings are based on the analysis of 232 survey results, where we tested the effects of AI adoption on workers' psychological contract, engagement and trust. We find that psychological contracts had a significant, positive effect on job engagement and on trust. Yet, with AI adoption, the positive effect of psychological contracts fell significantly. A further re-examination of

Effects of performing work-related secondary tasks during simulated driving: Comparison of text/voicemail and virtual meeting engagement.

OBJECTIVE: Driving has a heightened risk profile in occupational contexts. Increasingly, vehicles are being viewed as an extension of the workplace, with connectivity features enabling employees to remain contactable and even participate in virtual meetings while behind the wheel. This study examined the effects of performing two different secondary tasks (engaging with text/voice messages vs. virtual conference meeting) on drivers' visual attention and vehicle control during simulated occupational driving. METHODS: Fifty-two licensed drivers completed three drives in a fixed-base driving sim

How Transformational Leadership Shapes Teachers' Innovative Behavior: A Serial Mediation Model of Creative Growth Mindset and Work Engagement.

Teaching innovation plays a central role in advancing high-quality education and fulfilling the fundamental task of fostering moral development and holistic student growth. However, the internal mechanisms through which transformational leadership is associated with teachers' innovative behavior remain insufficiently understood. Integrating the implicit theories framework and the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, this study proposes a sequential mediation framework in which transformational leadership is associated with primary and secondary school teachers' innovative behavior through creat

Examining the Aftermath of Work-Family Conflict Episodes: Internal Attributions, Self-Conscious Emotions, Family Engagement, and Well-Being.

Little empirical research exists on attributions that people make regarding work-family conflict that they experience. Our study used attribution theory to examine the aftermath of work-family conflict episodes. We used a diary method in which respondents reported their daily encounters with work-family conflict, attributions they made about its causes, feelings of guilt and shame they experienced, and their levels of daily family engagement and well-being after work. Based on Ilies et al. (2012) we hypothesized that internal attributions of work-family conflict would be associated with feelin

Switching Gears: A Self-Regulatory Approach and Measure of Nonwork Role Re-Engagement Following After-Hours Work Intrusions.

BACKGROUND: As more adults undergo surgical fixation of clavicle fractures with improved outcomes, interest is renewed in managing clavicle fractures in adolescents. The medial clavicular physis does not fuse until 23 to 25 years of age, but studies report minimal clavicular growth during adolescence-studies that employed cross-sectional methodologies, which cannot not capture growth in patients over time. The assumption that clavicle length at each stage is uniform, as is the final overall length, may not be accurate if the age groups studied comprise various ethnicities, socioeconomic status

Navigating social isolation and scheduling flexibility: The unique experiences of immigrants engaging in remote and hybrid work.

BackgroundAt the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the increase in remote and hybrid work (RHW) positions opened new opportunities in the labor market for diverse populations in Canada, including immigrants. This change altered traditional workspaces for these employees, reshaping the interplay between daily activities, and blurring the spatial and temporal boundaries between occupational roles. Although immigrants are a vital part of Canada's economy, their experiences in RHW remain understudied in occupation-focused scholarship.ObjectiveTo explore the contextual factors shaping the emp
