Cananea copper mine: An international effort to improve hazardous working conditions in Mexico.

A team of international occupational health and safety professionals evaluated the working conditions and health status of miners at a giant open-pit copper mine in Cananea, Mexico. Workers in the ore processing plants were exposed to levels of crystalline silica 10 times the Mexican regulatory limit, high levels of acid mist and noise, and numerous safety hazards, including unguarded machinery and malfunctioning 10- and 15-ton cranes. Lung function testing and interviews with physicians showed a substantial percentage of miners with adverse respiratory symptoms including shortness of breath (

[Preconceptual care should include looking at the effect of working conditions on pregnancy].

Working conditions are amongst the exogenous factors that can lead to pregnancy complications. Attention within preconceptual care to the working conditions experienced by women who plan to become pregnant can change this, by influencing exposure to harmful working conditions. Until now, relatively little attention has been given to working conditions within preconceptual care, and the subject is often not discussed in daily midwifery practice. The most relevant literature on this topic is summarized in this article. Occupational exposure to certain chemicals, stressful work and nightshifts du

Age-related differences in working memory and force control under dual-task conditions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between force control and cognitive performance under dual-task conditions in younger (18-22 years) and older adults (65-77 years). Cognitive (n-back test) and motor performance (force-tracking) was measured independently and simultaneously. Results indicated overall age-related differences for the n-back and the force-tracking task. Age-related differences increased during dual-task conditions. While younger adults exhibited no decrease in cognitive or motor performance during dual-task conditions, older adults showed a decrease in mot

[The main principles of improving working and environmental conditions in gas-processing industry].

The major hygienically unfavourable factors in gas extraction industry include air contamination with natural gas components and its processing products, noise overload, exceedingly high (in summer) and low (in winter) temperatures at working sites. Primary health and environment related preventive measures should include the introduction of the most advanced techniques of purification of raw gas, exhausts into the atmosphere including hydrogen sulfide, sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbons, as well as further modernization of the technological equipment used with particular emphasis on the hermeti

[Relations between working conditions and occurrence of vibration disease in forestry workers. I].

The level of mechanic vibrations intensity of 20 motor saws of the BK-3a type and 5 saws of the Partner R-11 type was determined and the evaluation of 460 motorsawers' vibration exposure--in case of working on these types of saws--was performed. The evaluation covered saws of various technical conditions, with which felling, cross-cutting and trimming of soft and hard timber were performed. The vibration measured exceeds 3--5 times Soviet hygienic normatives and ISO, especially in octave frequencies of 63 and 125 Hz. The intensity level of vibrations was significantly dependent on the technica

Telework, working conditions, health and wellbeing during the Covid crisis: A gendered analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Telework was massively adopted during the COVID-19 crisis. Related changes in working conditions may have affected women's and men's health differently due to the gendered division of work. Our study aimed to assess the gendered association of telework with physical and mental health outcomes one year after the onset of the pandemic and to determine whether the pathways of working conditions underlying these associations are gender-related. METHODS: We compared pre-pandemic and Covid-crisis work contexts using a large representative sample of French employees surveyed in early 2021

Prison officers in Latin America: quality of life, working conditions and main difficulties.

Although the number of empirical studies on prison inmates in Latin America has increased in recent years, an aspect that still remains little studied is the situation of prison workers. This article analyzes the labor situation of prison officers in Latin America, and considers their working conditions, quality of life and the problems that affect them, in a region marked by precarious, overcrowded and violent prison systems. To do so, a systematic review of articles published in Spanish or Portuguese on the Scielo platform between 2000-2021 was carried out. Our main findings show that prison

Prevalence and risk factors of hearing loss using the korean working conditions survey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The hearing loss of workers can occur when they are affected by age, otologic disease, and work-related risks such as noise and chemicals. Based on the Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) in 2010, this research aimed to estimate the prevalence rate of hearing loss and to identify the risk factors affecting its occurrence. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 10019 employees who completed an interview conducted as part of KWCS in 2010. The prevalence rate of hearing loss according to sex, age, education, income, smoking, drinking, hypertension, industrial type

Subjective symptoms among female workers and winter working conditions in a consumer cooperative.

Subjective musculoskeletal symptoms are more frequently complained about in cold store work and in related conditions than in normal temperature work. This cross sectional study was undertaken (a) to explore the prevalence of subjective symptoms in winter among a group of female workers engaged in classification of cold storage goods, and in a group of female checkers in several supermarkets of a large consumer cooperative; and (b) to give recommendations for improving the winter working conditions of these workers. The subjects consisted of 46 workers engaged in classification of cold storage

Work Conditions are Associated with Alcohol Use after Taking into Account Life Conditions Outside of Work: Findings from a French Occupational Health Service.

Background: Our aim was to examine whether work conditions could be associated with alcohol use even after taking into account life conditions outside of work. Methods: In 2019, 591 consecutive French workers were screened for alcohol use with the Fast Alcohol Consumption Evaluation (FACE). Ten different work conditions and four life conditions outside of work were assessed with 5-item Likert scales. Sociodemographic factors, smoking status and the Copenhaguen Burn-out Inventory were also collected. The associations between each work condition and FACE total score were examined with generalize

Working conditions as risk factors for early exit from work-in a cohort of 2351 employees in Germany.

OBJECTIVES: We would assess the possible impact of a range of physical and psychosocial working conditions on early exit from paid employment (i.e., before retirement age) in a representative employee population in Germany. METHODS: We analysed a cohort from the German Study on Mental Health at Work (S-MGA) with a baseline of 2351 employees in 2011/12, sampled randomly from the register of integrated employment biographies (IEB) at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). Follow-up ended mid-2015. Early Exit comprised episodes of either pensioning, long-term sickness absence or unemployme

Work hazards and workers' mental health: an investigation based on the fifth European Working Conditions Survey.

BACKGROUND: Workplace hazards are a significant source of health impairment for workers and of financial losses for firms. EU directives on workers' health and safety standards significantly contributed to reduce reported occupational injuries, yet the incidence and prevalence of work-related mental illness is still very high. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between work-related hazards and individuals' perceived mental health. We reviewed the existing evidence on the channels through which task-related factors, adverse agents and psychosocial factors are expected to affect worker

Associations between Psychosocial Working Conditions and Work-Specific Self-Efficacy Beliefs Among Employees Receiving Psychotherapeutic Consultation at Work.

PURPOSE: By considering work-related aspects during early intervention and treatment of employees with (subclinical) symptoms of common mental disorders, psychotherapeutic consultation at work (PT-W) aims to increase work-specific self-efficacy (SE) to finally reduce sickness absence and contribute to successful return to work. This study, thus, aims to investigate interrelations between working conditions and work-specific SE among employees before receiving PT-W. METHODS: The study uses baseline data of a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of PT-W in Germany (n = 535). Working
