Working conditions and mental health among doctors and nurses in the European Union, Iceland, and Norway: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Europe faces persistent challenges in retaining and recruiting healthcare workers. Poor working conditions and deteriorating wellbeing may contribute to attrition and turnover intentions, yet large-scale studies examining associations between working conditions and mental health in Europe after the COVID-19 pandemic remain scarce. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey between October 2024 and April 2025 among a non-probabilistic sample of doctors and nurses in the 27 EU countries, Iceland, and Norway. Working conditions included job demands, hazards, resources, and

Mental health and psychological wellbeing of maritime personnel: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Seafaring has frequently been reported to be a 'risky occupation' in terms of both physical and mental health. Individuals working in seafaring professions are exposed to various stressors in the workplace, including social isolation, exposure to poor physical conditions and long work hours. This systematic review aimed to update previous reviews by collating recent literature (published between 2012 and 2021) on the factors associated with mental health and wellbeing in seafaring personnel. METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched in April 2021 for primary peer-reviewed s

Is overgeneral autobiographical memory an isolated memory phenomenon in major depression?

The present study explored the relation between overgeneral autobiographical memory (AM) and other aspects of memory functioning in depression. A total of 26 patients with major depressive disorder completed a set of memory tasks measuring AM specificity (AMT; Williams & Broadbent, 1986), working memory, semantic memory, verbal learning, delayed verbal recall, recognition memory, and source memory. Reduced specificity of AM was related to poor working memory (central executive functioning) and poor source memory. The former finding conforms to the idea that the voluntary retrieval of specific

Gender differences in the association between adverse childhood experiences and premature mortality: A prospective population study.

BACKGROUND: Birth cohort studies have shown that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with all-cause mortality. The effect of ACEs on premature mortality among working-age people is less clear and may differ between the genders. OBJECTIVE: In this prospective population study, we investigated the association of ACEs with all-cause mortality in a working-age population. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: In a representative Finnish population study, Health 2000, individuals aged 30 to 64 years were interviewed in 2000, and their deaths were registered until 2020. At baseline, the partic

We can predict when driving is no longer safe for people who have HD using standard neuropsychological measures.

BACKGROUND: Early cognitive dysfunction in Huntington's Disease (HD) is typically of a subcortical frontal executive type, with bradyphrenia, poor spatial and working memory, poor planning and organization, a lack of judgment, and poor mental flexibility. Although there is literature suggesting a correlation between deficits in speed of processing, working memory and executive function on driving competency, there is little direct evidence comparing these declines on tests to actual driving skills. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the utility of specific neuropsychological measures in pr

Executive functions in Chinese kindergarten children with early reading problems.

Learning to read Chinese is a complex task that draws on a range of executive function (EF) skills since early development. However, no studies have examined EF as a potential contributing factor to early reading problems among Chinese children. The present longitudinal study identified 48 poor readers and 48 normal readers among a sample of 190 Chinese children at the end of kindergarten. Measures of EF skills (working memory, inhibition control, and cognitive flexibility) and reading outcomes (word reading, sentence reading fluency, and sentence reading comprehension) were administered to th

Motor skills and working memory capacity in preadolescents born very preterm.

AIM: To investigate the association of very preterm birth with visuospatial working memory in preadolescents and its mediation via motor skills and a neural index of working memory capacity. METHOD: Case-control matching based on sex and age resulted in 53 participants born before 32 weeks of gestation and 53 participants (24 males, 29 females) born at term. All participants performed a change detection task that assessed working memory capacity from their k-score. The contralateral delay activity (CDA) elicited by the task was recorded using electroencephalography. Additionally, participants

'They might as well brand us': working-class resistance to compulsory vaccination in Victorian England.

From its origins in resistance to the 1853 Compulsory Vaccination Act, the Victorian anti-vaccination movement successfully challenged the public health policies of an increasingly interventionist state. Anti-vaccinationists were not only middle-class reformers, but were also drawn from a politically active working class. These campaigners saw compulsory vaccination as an extreme example of class legislation, for its policy and administration implicitly targeted working-class infants and inflicted multiple penalties on a public who considered themselves 'conscientious objectors'. Anti-vaccinat

Cortical surface area of the left frontal pole is associated with visuospatial working memory capacity.

Working memory, the ability to maintain and manipulate information over seconds, is central to cognition and it is impaired in many clinical populations. However, our knowledge of the structural properties associated with individual variation in visuospatial working memory capacity is currently poor. Across two locations (Stockholm and Oxford), we examined how regional surface area and cortical thickness in frontal and parietal regions were related to visuospatial working memory capacity. We found a negative association between visuospatial working memory capacity and the surface area of the l

Working memory in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is characterized by a lack of specialization of brain function.

Working memory impairments are frequent in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and create problems along numerous functional dimensions. The present study utilized the Visual Serial Addition Task (VSAT) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore working memory processes in thirteen typically developing (TD) control and thirteen children with ADHD, Combined type. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to examine both main effects and interactions. Working memory-specific activity was found in TD children in the bilateral prefrontal cortex. Load-dependent alpha suppression is related to working memory capacity for numbers.

Alpha suppression is proposed to reflect a surge in cortical excitability to enhance stimulus processing in working memory. The attenuated state of alpha might reflect the prioritisation of behaviourally relevant information, making it a proxy for working memory functioning. Despite the growing interest in utilising the advancement of brain-based measures to evaluate individuals' cognitive processes, there was a lack of consistent evidence on the relationship between alpha suppression and working memory performance. To investigate whether interindividual differences in alpha suppression might

The Role of Working Animals and Their Welfare Issues in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Working animals provide a critical socioeconomic role for many low-income communities, especially in Ethiopia nearly all draft power for agriculture production is generated from working animals. However, the welfare status of working animals remains worst in the country. Hence, understanding the major welfare problems of working animals is the key to improve their welfare status and to maximize their economic contribution. This systematic literature review encompasses 28 studies published between 2010 and 2024 that address the role of working animals and the factors impinging on their welfare.
