Examining physiological parameters of mental workload in the cockpit: a multimethod approach.

With increasing automation in the cockpit and the focus on adaptive assistance systems that provide tailored assistance to the pilots, it becomes increasingly relevant to monitor the pilots' state. While many different psychophysiological measurement methods have been utilized in previous studies, they each have drawbacks and limitations that need to be overcome to provide a valid and reliable operator state assessment. In the present study, we investigated the assessment of mental workload (MWL) using a multimethod approach and combination of different physiological measurements (including ne

Evaluation of Physical and Mental Workload and Transfusion Time in Trauma Resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Trauma resuscitation is time sensitive and complex. Whole blood (WB) and blood components are standard treatments for trauma related hemorrhage, yet their nursing workload and transfusion time have not been well evaluated. PURPOSE: To assess feasibility of a simulation-based crossover trial and obtain preliminary estimates comparing nursing workload and transfusion completion time between WB and blood component administration. METHODS: A randomized crossover pilot study using in situ simulation was conducted with experienced trauma nurses. Time-motion analysis measured transfusio

Impact of Surgeon Workload on Pregnancy Outcomes in Surgical Trainees and Faculty.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between workload and pregnancy outcomes among US surgical faculty and trainees. BACKGROUND: Despite the increased risk of pregnancy-associated complications among surgeons, most US institutions do not have formalized support to help sustain a healthy pregnancy in surgeons. METHODS: An anonymous self-administered Qualtrics survey was distributed electronically to US surgeons across all surgical specialties. Female surgical trainees/faculty with current or previous pregnancies were invited to participate. Data pertaining to demographics, workload, and

Investigating the Use of Changes in Facial Features as Indicators of Physical Workload.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSPhysical workload may lead to negative outcomes, including musculoskeletal disorders. In this study, we found that there were observable changes in facial features over the length of a low intensity, prolonged assembly task, and that these changes were correlated to other measures of physical workload. This method can be implemented by practitioners to evaluate physical workload.

Vigilance to Spatialized Auditory Displays: Initial Assessment of Performance and Workload.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to evaluate human performance and workload associated with an auditory vigilance task that required spatial discrimination of auditory stimuli. BACKGROUND: Spatial auditory displays have been increasingly developed and implemented into settings that require vigilance toward auditory spatial discrimination and localization (e.g., collision avoidance warnings). Research has yet to determine whether a vigilance decrement could impede performance in such applications. METHOD: Participants completed a 40-minute auditory vigilance task in either a spatial

Mental Workload in Neuropsychology: An Example With the NASA-TLX in Adults With HIV.

A preliminary set of analyses are presented, where workload was examined in 32 adults infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Like the current COVID-19 pandemic (caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus), HIV can produce a wide variety of symptoms, including various levels of cognitive dysfunction. In fact, a recent meta-analysis estimates that of the 39 million adults infected globally with HIV, 42.6% exhibit some form of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. A common cognitive symptom in HIV is decline in attention and executive functioning. Though typically examined by clinicians with

The Effect of Hurricane Maria on the Surgical Workload of the UPR-affiliated Hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: The Caribbean islands are regularly affected by hurricanes in a seasonal manner, but major (category 4 and 5) hurricanes are infrequent, and what happens in their aftermath is important for future planning. METHODS: We reviewed the surgical cases entered into the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) General Surgery Department database from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2017. This database collects patient and procedural information from the surgical services of the UPR-affiliated hospitals. To analyze the impact that Hurricane Maria had on the surgical population, we compared ca

Effects of Manual Material Handling Workload on Measures of Fall Risk.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONS We found, contrary to expectations, that performing a fatiguing simulated heavy manual material handling (MMH) task did not adversely affect the risk of trip-induced falls when compared to a less-fatiguing light MMH task. However, when considering these MMH tasks together rather than in comparison, our results provide evidence for adverse effects of fatigue on both gait and the ability to recover balance after tripping. The current results provide additional evidence that physical fatigue increases fall risk, start to clarify the mechanisms by which this increase occu

Rating of perceived exertion is a stable and appropriate measure of workload in judo.

OBJECTIVES: Heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentration [La] and/or rating of perceived exertion (RPE) have been utilised to monitor judo training load in technical and randori (competition training) sessions, but are yet to be investigated in mixed sessions containing both elements. Therefore the purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the stability of these variables, and (2) to assess the efficacy of RPE as a load variable for mixed judo sessions. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Twenty-nine athletes attended two mixed training sessions at an international training camp. Bout

Critical analysis of the "anaerobic threshold" during exercise at constant workloads.

The method described by Wasserman for anaerobic threshold (AT) determination, based on the recording of ventilatory parameters, was supported by the simultaneous appearance of hyperlactacidemia and hyperventilation during a standardized incremental work test. Our study aimed at testing the AT in another profile of exercise, viz., during exercises at constant workloads. A homogenous population of 66 healthy subjects performed on a treadmill a total of 100 exercises of 20 min duration at constant workloads (43, 48, 52, 57, 63, and 71% VO2 max). The VO2, V, and venous plasma lactic acid (LA) were

Subjective workload in operating room team members during robotic hernia procedures.

While robotic surgery has been dominated by a single platform in the United States for over 25 years, the introduction of new robotic systems may have an impact on subjective workload. Therefore, we aimed to establish baseline workload measurements for operating room team members using the DaVinci surgical robot during robotic hernia procedures, providing reference points for evaluating team adaptation as new robotic platforms are introduced. Within the operating room, subjective workload refers to the physical, cognitive, and temporal demands experienced during surgical procedures. We prospec

Exploration of biomechanics, mental workload and metabolism factors during prosthetic gait.

Progress in prosthetics development have greatly improved everyday life of people with lower limb amputations. However, efficiently operating a prosthetic device requires a complex learning process, as users need to familiarize with the biomechanics of prosthetic-assisted gait. Both mental and physical workloads play a role in this process, with significant implications for prosthetic use and acceptance. In this perspective review, we explore the intricate relationships between these elements in lower limb prosthetic users and foster the discussion about the possible correlation between variou

The perceived workload of first-line healthcare professionals during neonatal resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is stressful for healthcare professionals as measured using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). Little is known regarding the perceived workload and associated factors among healthcare professionals including medical doctors (MDs) and nurses/midwives who have differences in training and experiences. We aimed to characterize and compare the perceived workload between MDs and nurses/midwives who provided neonatal resuscitation. METHODS: In a prospectively designed, cellphone-based surveillance, perceived workload and s

Surgical team configuration, technical errors, and workload in robotic distal gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Robotic distal gastrectomy requires coordinated task allocation between the console surgeon and bedside assistant. Whether a laparoscopic-like "3-arm+2-port" configuration is associated with better technical performance and lower surgical workload compared with the conventional "4-arm+1-port" configuration remains unclear. METHODS: This single-center prospective cohort study included 84 patients undergoing robotic distal gastrectomy from September 2025 to March 2026. After variable-ratio propensity score matching, 45 patients in the "3-arm+2-port" group and 22 in the "4-arm+1-port
