Workplace injuries, such as musculoskeletal injuries, needlestick injuries, and emotional and physical violence, remain an issue in U.S. hospitals. To develop meaningful safety programs, it is important to identify workplace factors that contribute to injuries. This study explored factors that affect injuries in a sample of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) in Florida. Regressions were run on models in which the dependent variable was the degree to which the respondent had experienced needlesticks, work-related musculoskeletal injuries, cuts or lacerations, contusions, verbal violence,

Workplace violence refers to physical violence, verbal abuse, threats, or other aggressive behaviors directed toward healthcare workers in the workplace. It is a critical occupational and public health hazard, disproportionately affecting emergency departments (EDs) worldwide. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on the prevalence of ED violence and to map its risk determinants through the lens of 'Who, When, and Why'. We conducted a scoping review following PRISMA guidelines, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies on risk determinants for ED violence. PubMed

INTRODUCTION: Actions of physical violence, harassment, or other threatening and intimidating behavior characterize workplace violence, often subsequently followed by seclusion to maintain safety in emergency department (ED) and psychiatric settings. Though there is no universally identified benchmark of acceptable rates of seclusion, April to September 2023 preintervention rate of seclusion hours on a psychiatric ED unit at a public state hospital in the southeast was 5.57/1,000 patient care hours, exceeding current comparison data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for cal

Workplace violence, including verbal and physical abuse, is escalating nationwide. As healthcare workers try to enforce COVID-19 prevention policies and practices, this phenomenon is exacerbated. De-escalation training is a method to prepare nurses through increased situational awareness, leading to early recognition and improved coping and confidence in dealing with aggression. Outcomes are presented, suggesting education of nurses may have a positive influence on the number of security calls and incident reports.
