Argentine and World Health Organization head circumference standards: A comparison study.

Introduction. Several studies have shown population differences in head circumference (HC) that question the universal validity of the World Health Organization (WHO) standard to assess head growth. Objectives. To compare the Argentine reference charts for HC from 0 to 5 years of age with the WHO standards. Population and methods. The 3rd and 97th percentiles for HC based on the Argentine reference charts were compared with the corresponding WHO standard and the percentage of children classified as having microcephaly (HC < 3rd percentile of the WHO) and macrocephaly (HC > 97th percentile of t

Reduction in World Health Organization Risk Drinking Levels and Cardiovascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Reductions in World Health Organization (WHO) risk drinking levels have recently been shown to lower the risk of multiple adverse health outcomes, but prior work has not examined reductions in WHO risk drinking levels in relation to cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States and of global mortality. This study examined associations between reductions in WHO risk drinking levels and subsequent risk for CVD. METHODS: In a US national survey, 1,058 very-high-risk and high-risk drinkers participated in Wave 1 interviews (2001 to 200

Polio eradication in the World Health Organization African Region, 2008-2012.

A renewed commitment at the regional and the global levels led to substantial progress in the fight for polio eradication in the African Region (AFR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) during 2008-2012. In 2008, there were 912 reported cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) infection in 12 countries in the region. This number had been reduced to 128 cases in 3 countries in 2012, of which 122 were in Nigeria, the only remaining country with endemic circulation of WPV in AFR. During 2008-2012, circulation apparently ceased in the 3 AFR countries with reestablished WPV transmission-Angola, the Democr

The World Health Organization (WHO) histologic classification of thymomas: a reanalysis.

The histologic classification of thymomas has remained for many years an area of conflict. In recent years, the World Health Organization (WHO) presented a proposal for the classification of these tumors, which has been widely adopted in many countries throughout the world. Two successive versions of this classification have been presented in recent years; however, controversy still exists regarding its accuracy and usefulness in clinical practice. We present a review of the current WHO classification of thymomas, with a discussion of some of the inconsistencies and limitations and the possibl

[Work-related diseases. A new program of the World Health Organization].

Work-related diseases are multifactorial diseases in which the work environment plays a partial role in causation. They include chronic noncommunicable disease affecting working populations. There is evidence that such diseases as musculoskeletal disorders, hypertension, chronic bronchitis, and several psychosomatic disturbances affecting workers can be attributed to a variety of risk factors, including those in the workplace. Examples of investigations and the occurrence or various work-related diseases are cited from several countries. Occupational health is evolving to deal with multifactor

The new program of the World Health Organization in medical virology.

The World Health Organization (WHO) convened a Scientific Group to adapt its program in virus diseases to recent progress in virology. The program consists of (a) general activities, such as reference services and the supplying of reagents by the WHO Collaborating Centres and (b) specific activities to solve problems-including the promotion of necessary research-caused by certain diseases of public health importance. The Group reviewed problems caused by influenza and other respiratory viruses, enteroviruses, gastroenteritis viruses (for which types A and B have been proposed as a convenient n

Strengthening Global Health Governance: Recommendations for the World Health Organization in Future Pandemic Responses.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in the World Health Organization's (WHO) governance structures, raising significant concerns about its capacity to manage global public health crises. Governance challenges, including delayed responses, inadequate international coordination, and communication failures, undermined public trust and global health security, necessitating rigorous ethical examination of WHO's institutional decision-making processes. This article examines WHO's pandemic response through ethical frameworks-particularly care ethics-while evaluating how

Implications of U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization on health financing in Africa.

The U.S. decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) under President Trump's second term has significant implications for global health financing, particularly in Africa. As the largest contributor to the WHO, the U.S. provided 12-15% of the organization's total funding between 2022 and 2023, and its withdrawal threatens essential health programs addressing HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, tuberculosis, and malaria, which heavily rely on external funding. Reduced funding will disproportionately affect low- and middle-income African countries, increasing the financial burd

Trade and health: how World Trade Organization (WTO) law affects alcohol and public health.

AIMS: The alcohol field is becoming more aware of the consequences of world trade law for alcohol policies. However, there is a need for greater clarity about the different effects of trade on alcohol-related harm. METHODS: A comprehensive review of all literature on alcohol and world trade [including World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes on alcohol], supported by a more selective review of other relevant cases, academic reports and the grey literature on trade and health. RESULTS: The burden of WTO law on alcohol policies depends upon the type of policy in question. Purely protectionist p

The World Health Organization study on health effects of exposure to cadmium: morbidity studies.

Studies according to the protocol of the WHO Regional Office for Europe were performed in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Pilot studies were performed in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland. The results of the Belgian study are described elsewhere; some striking results of the other studies are reported here. The highest levels of cadmium in blood (Cd-B) were reported in a cadmium-polluted area in Hungary, the lowest in a non-polluted urban area. In Poland, levels were enhanced in polluted and non-polluted areas. The highest levels of cadmium in urine (Cd-U) were found in Hungary, the low

World Health Organization's programme on the prevention of blindness.

The WHO Programme for the Prevention of Blindness was established in 1978, reflecting the need for action against the burden of avoidable blindness, which constitutes an increasingly serious socioeconomic problem in many countries. A vast majority of the world's blind live in developing countries, where unoperated cataract, trachoma, xerophthalmia and onchocerciasis are the main causes of visual loss. Thus, more than two-thirds of blindness encountered in such areas is either preventable or curable. The objectives of the WHO Programme for the Prevention of Blindness are to reduce the amount of

Daily Exceedance of World Health Organization Air Pollutant Guidelines and Cognitive Aging.

IMPORTANCE: Long-term exposure to higher average air pollutant concentrations is associated with poorer cognitive health, but annual averages can obscure substantial differences in day-to-day exposure. Whether recurrent high pollution days are associated with long-term cognitive aging trajectories among people with similar overall air pollution exposure is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the annual number of days exceeding World Health Organization daily guideline values for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) is associated with subsequent cognitive decline

The World Health Organization and the Shifting US and Global Political Orders.

The withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) raises crucial questions about its future as the governing international organization for health. The executive order on withdrawal was one of President Donald Trump's first acts in his second term. Because the United States is WHO's biggest funder and most powerful state backer, withdrawal could indicate an existential threat. However, almost simultaneously member states passed a new international Pandemic Agreement expanding WHO's authority. How should these conflicting signals be understood? Analyzing WHO's decline

World Health Organization classification of tumours of the breast 6th edition 2026.

The 6th edition of the WHO Classification of Breast Tumours introduces both major and minor changes based on recent advances in our understanding of breast biology, developments in diagnostic modalities, identification of specific molecular targets and new treatment regimens necessitating modifications to pathology reporting and tumour biomarker categorisation. This review summarises the main changes that strive towards a classification of global relevance. In invasive carcinoma, predictive factors increasingly inform modern breast cancer treatment. The 6th edition provides an update on HER2 r

[Overview of the New World Health Organization Classification of Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors].

The 5th edition of the World Health Organization(WHO)classification of endocrine and neuroendocrine tumors was revised in 2022. A major nomenclature change was from "adenoma" to "pituitary neuroendocrine tumor"(PitNET). Tumors are classified based on the cell lineage as determined by expression of transcription factors, such as, PIT1, TPIT, and SF1. Therapeutic modalities available for management of functioning PitNETs include surgery, medical treatment, and irradiation. Transsphenoidal surgery is the gold-standard surgical treatment. The aim of the present study was to summarize changes from
