Biomechanical analysis of the effectiveness of in-line skating wrist guards for preventing wrist fractures.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of commercially available wrist guards in preventing wrist fractures. Forty arms were harvested from 20 cadaveric specimens. The forearms from each cadaver, one with a wrist guard and one without a wrist guard, were then fractured using an instron Servohydraulic Material Testing System. The group of forearms tested to failure without wrist guards failed at an average force of 2245 N, while the group tested with wrist guards fractured at an average force of 2285 N, revealing no statistical difference. Similarly, observed fract

MDCT and radiography of wrist fractures: radiographic sensitivity and fracture patterns.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to determine which wrist fractures are not prospectively diagnosed at radiography using CT as a gold standard and to identify specific fracture patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a search of radiology records from January 1 to December 31, 2005, 103 consecutive patients were identified as having radiographic and CT examinations of the wrist. After excluding incomplete or nondiagnostic examinations and those with a greater than 6-week interval between imaging studies, the final study group consisted of 61 wrist examinations in 60 patients. Do wrist buckle fractures in children need follow-up? Buckle fractures' follow-up.

Buckle or torus fractures in the distal forearm are characterized by a bulging of the cortical bone. They are a frequent reason for consultation in pediatric emergencies. The treatment and follow-up of this type of fractures varies from soft immobilizations to a plaster cast. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of buckle fractures of the distal radius. We reviewed 106 pediatric patients with buckle fractures and analyzed the radiographs at the time of initial consultation and at the last follow-up. None of these fractures displaced further, regardless of the treatment given. B

Relation between the dash score and radiographic evaluation of the wrist in patients with wrist fracture.

Traditionally, the assessment of distal radius fracture outcomes has been based on radiological measurements and self-evaluation scores. However, there is uncertainty regarding how accurately these measurements reflect the patient's perception of their outcome. In this study, we examined the correlation between radiological measurements and patient-perceived outcomes using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand outcome (DASH) score. 140 individuals who had recovered from a distal radius fracture. and had been treated with DVR, Kapandji, percutaneous pinning or closed reduction were in

Pilon fractures of the wrist. Displaced intra-articular fractures of the distal radius.

22 patients who sustained high energy wrist injuries are reported. These complex injuries resulted in articular disruption of the distal radius. Associated injuries included scapho-lunate dissociation (18%), central die-punch injuries (14%), ulnar fractures (41%) and diastasis at the distal radioulnar joint (23%). Nine fractures (41%) were open and almost a third of patients had other skeletal injuries. All patients were treated by external fixation and reviewed after a mean follow-up of 2 1/2 years. There were no excellent results and only ten good ones (45%). The mean functional impairment w

Epidemiology of hip and wrist fractures in Cameroon, Africa.

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are believed to be uncommon in Africa. To reevaluate this notion, we documented all patients aged 35 years and older admitted to the two main urban hospitals in Cameroon following a diagnosis of fracture during 2 years. Among 513 patients sustaining fractures (192 women, 321 men), 13.5% of all fractures in women occurred at the hip (n=26), 4.7% at the forearm (n=9), and 81.8% (n=157) at other sites (mainly tibia and femoral shaft). In men, the corresponding figures were 9% (n=29), 1.9% (n=6), and 89.1% (n=286). Of the hip and wrist fractures occurring in wo

Sports and Recreation-Related Wrist Fractures: An Epidemiological Study.

Background Wrist fractures have increased over the past several decades. The objective of this study was to identify all-cause and sports-related incidence rates of wrist fractures presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the United States (U.S.) from 2013 to 2022. A secondary aim of the study was to identify if wrist fractures significantly decreased during 2020. Methodology The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was queried to identify the number of wrist fractures presenting to U.S. EDs from 2013 to 2022. Incidence rates in 100,000 person-years were calculated by sp

Osteoporosis follow-up after wrist fractures following minor trauma.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with low-trauma wrist fractures are an ideal target population for early case finding of osteoporosis. We decided to investigate whether this early detection occurred in practice. METHODS: This study was conducted at a single center in Edmonton, Alberta. A structured interview format was used to contact 112 (72%) of 156 patients older than 40 years who were diagnosed as having an atraumatic fracture of the distal radius/ulna from April 1997 to March 1998 and from January 1999 to February 1999. Information on osteoporosis follow-up and drug therapy was obtained

Scaphoid fractures and wrist pain--time for new thinking.

As with the practice of all medicine, an early accurate diagnosis is essential. The same applies after injury. The diagnosis should be made at the earliest opportunity--this should be done as soon as an appropriate expert is able to examine the patient, assess adequate radiographs and, where necessary, order special investigations such as a bone scan. By this means, distal radial fractures, injuries of the radioulna joint, dislocated lunates, Bennett's fractures, dorsal capsular wrist sprains, avulsion fractures etc. can be managed accordingly. Those patients in whom clinical examination, plai

Evaluation of the diagnostic performance of tomosynthesis in fractures of the wrist.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to define the diagnostic value of tomosynthesis compared with standard radiography and CT in wrist injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients with acute wrist trauma were investigated with standard radiography, tomosynthesis, and CT. Reference results were those obtained with CT; follow-up monitoring of the patients; and, in some cases, MRI (n=13). Three readers interpreted the findings independently, each using a PACS workstation, and categorized the cases into four groups: fracture of the radius, fracture of the scaphoid, fractu

The impact of osteoporosis on the classification of hip and wrist fractures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated a correlation between bone density, stability of fracture fixation, and outcome. Because current fracture classifications do not take osteoporosis into account, a prospective radiological analysis was conducted of patients with hip and wrist fracture to evaluate the impact of osteoporosis on fracture classification. MATERIAL/METHODS: Altogether, 77 consecutive patients with either hip or wrist fracture were prospectively recruited within 24 hours of sustaining the fracture. The patients were assigned to subgroups according to gender, fracture site, fr

The treatment of Colles' fracture. Immobilisation with the wrist dorsiflexed.

In a prospective study, 204 consecutive patients with displaced Colles' fractures had closed reduction then plaster immobilisation. Three different positions of the wrist in plaster were randomly allocated: palmar flexion, neutral and dorsiflexion. The results in the three groups were compared. Fractures immobilised with the wrist in dorsiflexion showed the lowest incidence of redisplacement, especially of dorsal tilt, and had the best early functional results. Immobilisation of the wrist in palmar flexion has a detrimental effect on hand function; it is suggested that it is also one of the ma

Translunate, palmar perilunate fracture-subluxation of the wrist.

Three cases of palmar perilunate subluxation associated with a fracture of the palmar pole of the lunate are described. Wrist hyperflexion with a longitudinal loading force transmitted through the capitate probably accounts for this injury.
