AIM: This study aims to examine the mechanism and subsequent treatment modalities of hand and wrist injuries sustained in a professional cricket team.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected injury data at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club (GCCC) over six seasons (2008-2013). We investigated all injuries sustained, treated by the team lead physiotherapist and senior author.
RESULTS: There were a total of 64 injuries recorded, with 55 (86%) hand and 9 (14%) wrist injuries. The little and ring fingers were the most commonly injured, and the most commonly occur

Correct diagnosis of wrist injuries is critical in preventing prolonged pain and dysfunction. Radiographs cannot diagnose a large percentage of injuries. Wrist sprain is considered one of the most common yet most treacherous emergency department (ED) diagnoses because radiographs do not always rule out all acute injuries. Knowledge of the anatomy, normal physical examination findings, and physical examination abnormalities associated with different pathological conditions, is paramount in making the correct diagnosis. This article focuses on the anatomy, diagnosis, and ED management of acute w

Athletic injuries of the hand and wrist continue to increase as athletes get bigger, faster, and the weekend warrior continues to be active throughout his or her lifespan. The management of hand and wrist injuries in these athletes depends on the sport, position, timing during the season the injury occurs, and how many years the athlete has left to play in competition. In the past, these injuries were thought to be trivial; but if not ideally managed, complications can occur which may keep the skilled athlete or the weekend warrior out for a prolonged period of time. This article concentrates

Diagnosis of upper extremity injuries depends on knowledge of basic anatomy and biomechanics of the hand and wrist. The wrist is composed of two rows of carpal bones. Flexor and extensor tendons cross the wrist to allow function of the hand and digits. The ulnar, median, and radial nerves provide innervation of the hand and wrist. A systematic primary and secondary examination of the hand and wrist includes assessment of active and passive range of motion of the wrist and digits, and dynamic stability testing. The most commonly fractured bone of the wrist is the scaphoid, and the most common l

This article provides the emergency physician a thorough understanding of the basic and surface anatomy required to accurately diagnose wrist injuries in the emergency department. Functional and neurologic examinations are discussed in detail as they increase precision in diagnosis. Special radiographic studies, guided by exam findings, are often crucial in adequately visualizing an otherwise occult injury. Radiographic evidence of injury is not present at time of initial evaluation in a small but noteworthy percentage of significant injuries. For these reasons, the appropriate use of radiogra

The wrist and elbow, an intricate arrangement of bones, tendons, and ligaments, frequently are the source of reported problems in the primary care setting. Understanding the functional anatomy and acquiring adeptness for examination are the key to proper diagnosis of injuries and conditions that plague the wrist and elbow. A brief overview of the anatomy and physiology of the wrist and elbow joints is given. Diagnosis and management of common injuries and reported problems faced by practitioners are discussed. The provider is offered guidance on when to refer for specialty evaluation.

UNLABELLED: Wrist arthroscopy clearly shows lesions of carpal bone cartilages, the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC), and of carpal ligaments. Between October, 1993, and August, 1994, 37 out of 47 wrist arthroscopies were performed in the consequence of trauma. The indication was on one hand a joint check for planning further surgery, on the other hand a profound suspicion of a severe intraarticular damage, which was raised in a standardized clinical examination with localizing any points of tenderness, testing for carpal instability, and provoking carpal subluxations and pathological clicks. Darrach's procedure was performed for post-traumatic symptoms in the inferior radio-ulnar joint in 36 patients, who were reviewed after a mean follow-up of 6 years. Only 18 of the patients had a satisfactory clinical result. Poor outcome was associated with osteoarthritis of the wrist, the occurrence of algodystrophy and a short ulnar remnant.

Multiple injuries to the hand are relatively common in basketball. This article explains the importance of an early and thorough examination, preferably by a hand specialist. It is important to obtain a history of prior injury during the assessment because treatment and prognosis may be very different. Delayed treatment often yields an inferior result and lost time. If an injury is not treated initially, it may require operative treatment or even be untreatable.

An analysis of the results of treatment of 19 'full-house' injuries is presented. In this series 'full-house' syndrome/spaghetti wrist injuries refers to those injuries involving ten or more structures severed at the volar wrist. Gratifying results in overall hand function were obtained in 18 patients. However, ulnar nerve intrinsic recovery and fine sensibility recovery was disappointing. Recommendations for improvement in the management of these injuries are made.

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of hand and wrist pain in athletes. Wrist injuries include fractures, dislocations, and instability patterns. Hand injuries include tendon injuries, ligamentous injuries, and fractures. In this article we have presented the radiographic appearance of the more common of these injuries.

Growth plate or physeal injuries are classified according to the zones of the physis that are affected and the disruption of bony structure. All physeal injuries should be reduced anatomically, particularly when an articular surface is involved. Inability to restore normal configuration can result in malunion, incongruous articular surfaces and premature cessation of growth plate activity in the region of injury. Innocuous-appearing injuries that do not involve articular surfaces may result in severe abnormalities.

Ligamentous injuries in the hand and wrist are often underdiagnosed and can present with significant functional limitations if there is untimely recognition of injury. Adequate repair or reconstruction is critical in restoring joint stability and mobility. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the metacarpophalangeal joint, scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL), and non-SLIL carpal ligament anatomy, diagnosis, imaging, treatment consideration and options, as well as surgical techniques encompassing repair, reconstruction, and fusion.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) following hand/wrist injuries.
METHODS: The sociodemographic characteristics of the patients and details regarding the presence of an occupational accident, the type of hand/wrist injury (bone, tendon, nerve, mixed), the Modified Hand Injury Severity Score (MHISS) (minor, moderate, severe, major), and the presence of CRPS were obtained from the hospital information system and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 311 patient files were included in the study. In all, 23.8% of the patients developed CRPS and 49.2%

Injuries to the hands and wrist are common in athletes. Injuries include acute fractures, dislocations, ligamentous, and tendon injuries, as well as more chronic injuries such as sprains and strains. Complications in the treatment of sports injuries of the hand and wrist may be divided into 2 categories: incorrect or delayed diagnosis and iatrogenic injury related to treatment. This article highlights common sports injuries of the hand and wrist and their complications, and includes tips for successful management.

Proper identification and management of traumatic hand and wrist injuries is critical to preventing loss of function, nerve damage, joint instability, persistent pain, and delay in indicated surgery. This article uses case studies to help clinicians make accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. Physical examination findings, radiograph results, and treatment plans are reviewed for four traumatic hand and wrist fractures or dislocations.
