Prevalence of Yersinia pestis in rodents and fleas associated with black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) at Thunder Basin National Grassland, Wyoming.

Rodents (and their fleas) that are associated with prairie dogs are considered important for the maintenance and transmission of the bacterium (Yersinia pestis) that causes plague. Our goal was to identify rodent and flea species that were potentially involved in a plague epizootic in black-tailed prairie dogs at Thunder Basin National Grassland. We collected blood samples and ectoparasites from rodents trapped at off- and on-colony grids at Thunder Basin National Grassland between 2002 and 2004. Blood samples were tested for antibodies to Y. pestis F-1 antigen by a passive hemagglutination as

A case of bacteremia and pneumonia caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies equi infection in a 70-year-old female following horse exposure in rural Wyoming.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of zoonotic infections following an animal exposure continues to be an important consideration for all patients, especially those within agricultural communities. Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (S. equi subsp. equi) is a bacteria known to cause a common infection called 'Strangles' in horses. This article highlights a new case of pneumonia and bacteremia in a patient caused by S. equi subsp. equi following strangles exposure in a horse. Rarely has there been reported horse to human transmission of subsp. equi. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman attended a ru

Babesia moshkovskii (Schurenkova, 1938) Laird and Lari, 1957; from the prairie falcon, Falco mexicanus, in Wyoming; with comments on other parasites found in this host.

Babesia moshkovskiiwas found in the blood of 6 of 30 downy (D) Prairie Falcons and in none of 5 adults (A) from Wyoming. Intestinal parasites included Neodiplostomum (C) spathula (A,3), Cladotaenia globifera, (A,1), Physaloptera sp., (A,1), and Serratospiculum amaculatum, (a,4). ornithodorus concanensis, (D,3), Thrassis francisi, (D,1), Opisocrostis sp., (D.1), Degeeriella rufa, (D,2), Simulium (E.) canonicola (D,2), and an unidentified hippoboscid fly, (D,2) were external parasites. It is considered that the soft tick, O. concanensis, is the most likely vector of the hematozoon. The morpholog

A Large Scaphognathine (Pterosauria: Rhamphorhynchidae) Humerus With A Pneumatic Foramen and Enlarged Condyles from Morrison Formation, Wyoming, With a Discussion of the Implications of Humeral Condyles in Pterosaurs.

We describe a large, three-dimensionally preserved pterosaur humerus from Bone Cabin Quarry in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation; one of the largest Jurassic pterosaur humeri on record. The tongue-shaped, relatively unconstricted deltopectoral crest suggests it belongs to a member of the clade Scaphognathinae, though humeri of scaphognathines remain poorly described in the literature. Bone Cabin Quarry has also produced the holotype rostrum of a scaphognathine pterosaur, Harpactognathus gentryii, which possesses a similar estimated wingspan of over two meters, so we tentatively refer the B

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis Infection in a Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) in Wyoming, USA, with Additional Herd Surveillance Using Noninvasive Methods.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) infection (Johne's disease; paratuberculosis) is a bacterial disease primarily of domestic ruminants that causes weight loss, diarrhea, and mortality. It has been documented in North American wild ruminants previously (e.g., Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep [Ovis canadensis canadensis], Key deer [Odocoileus virginianus clavium], Rocky Mountain goat [Oreamnos americanus], tule elk [Cervus canadensis nannodes], and white-tailed deer [Odocoileus virginianus]); however, the prevalence and implications of this disease in free-ranging populations are

Trusted voices and tailored messaging: public health approaches to firearm safety for older adult firearm owners in the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) region.

BACKGROUND: Despite high rates of firearm suicide among older adults, little is known about their needs and preferences for information on safer firearm storage. This study examines information needs and communication preferences of older adult firearm owners with depression or cognitive impairment to inform public health firearm injury prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with older adult firearm owners with depression or mild cognitive impairment in the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) region of the USA. We used a hybrid inductive-

Coordinated Primary-Care Access in Rural and Suburban Alberta, with a Contextual Comparison to Rural Wyoming: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis of Community Pharmacist-Family Physician Care Models.

Background/Objectives: Primary-care access in Alberta, Canada, is shaped by geography, attachment, timeliness, continuity, and local service capacity. Rural communities may face travel burden, workforce fragility, and intermittent services, whereas suburban communities may have nearby facilities but still experience delayed access, low attachment, and fragmented episodic care. Rural Wyoming has some similar geographic and workforce constraints, although the jurisdictions differ in financing, regulation, and pharmacist scope. This systematic review and narrative synthesis examined evidence on c

Sarcoptic mange found in wolves in the Rocky Mountains in western United States.

We documented sarcoptic mange caused by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) in 22 gray wolves (Canis lupus) in the northern Rocky Mountain states of Montana (n=16) and Wyoming (n=6), from 2002 through 2008. To our knowledge, this is the first report of sarcoptic mange in wolves in Montana or Wyoming in recent times. In addition to confirming sarcoptic mange, we recorded field observations of 40 wolves in Montana and 30 wolves in Wyoming displaying clinical signs of mange (i.e., alopecia, hyperkeratosis, and seborrhea). Therefore, we suspect sarcoptic mange may be more prevalent than we were able to conf

Brucellosis Transmission between Wildlife and Livestock in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: Inferences from DNA Genotyping.

The wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem carries brucellosis, which was first introduced to the area by cattle in the 19th century. Brucellosis transmission between wildlife and livestock has been difficult to study due to challenges in culturing the causative agent, Brucella abortus . We examined B. abortus transmission between American bison ( Bison bison ), Rocky Mountain elk ( Cervus elaphus nelsoni), and cattle ( Bos taurus ) using variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) markers on DNA from 98 B. abortus isolates recovered from populations in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, US. Validation of a Brucella abortus competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for use in Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni).

Brucellosis caused by infection with Brucella abortus is present in some elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) of the Greater Yellowstone Area (parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, USA). Since 1985, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has vaccinated elk on elk feedgrounds in northwestern Wyoming during the winter months using B. abortus strain 19 (strain 19). Analysis of this vaccination program is hampered by the inability of standard serologic tests to differentiate between strain 19 vaccinated elk and those exposed to field strain B. abortus. In 1993, a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assa

Molecular epidemiology of Brucella abortus isolates from cattle, elk, and bison in the United States, 1998 to 2011.

A variable-number tandem repeat (VNTR) protocol targeting 10 loci in the Brucella abortus genome was used to assess genetic diversity among 366 field isolates recovered from cattle, bison, and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) and Texas during 1998 to 2011. Minimum spanning tree (MST) and unweighted-pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analyses of VNTR data identified 237 different VNTR types, among which 14 prominent clusters of isolates could be identified. Cattle isolates from Texas segregated into three clusters: one comprised of field isolates from 1998 to 2005, one comp

Safety enhancement of a specialized power assisted tricycle for a child with osteogenesis imperfecta type III.

A child in the community of Laramie, Wyoming was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta which is a genetic disorder that limits the physical abilities, size, and strength of the child. A customized power assisted tricycle was developed, which offered a unique opportunity to serve multiple purposes in his childhood development. This tricycle will ultimately provide him with the opportunity to gain muscle mass, strength, coordination, and confidence. The tricycle was completed as a senior design project in 2002, funded by the National Science Foundation, Biomedical Engineering Program and research to

Colorado Tick Fever Virus in the Far West: Forgotten, but Not Gone.

In the past few decades, reported human cases of Colorado tick fever in the western United States have decreased dramatically. The goal of this study was to conduct surveillance for Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV) in Dermacentor ticks in recreational sites in Colorado, Wyoming, and California to determine whether the virus is still present in Dermacentor ticks from these states. Surveillance focused on regions where surveys had been conducted in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Adult Rocky Mountain wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni), Pacific Coast ticks (Dermacentor occidentalis), and winter tick

Euarchontans from Fantasia, an upland middle Eocene locality at the western margin of the Bighorn Basin.

The fossil record of North American Eocene mammals is best known from relatively low-elevation 'basin center' fossil localities in intermontane depositional basins of the Western Interior. This sampling bias, largely drawn from preservational bias, has limited our understanding of fauna from higher elevation Eocene fossil localities. Here we describe new specimens of crown primates and microsyopid plesiadapiforms from a middle Eocene (Bridgerian) locality ('Fantasia') from the western margin of the Bighorn Basin in Wyoming. Fantasia has been considered a 'basin-margin' site and geological evid
