False-positive xerostomia following radioactive iodine treatment: case report.

Radioactive iodine (131I), used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma, is known to cause both short-term and long-term radiation damage to the salivary glands. The injury appears as glandular swellings and/or decreased salivation with 131I dosage and passage of time playing significant roles. A case report is presented to alert the profession to the existence of patients who have received 131I therapy and who complain shortly thereafter of xerostomia, but following a thorough examination are found to represent a group of false-positives. Emphasis is placed on the diagnostic tech

Oral disease in terminally ill cancer patients with xerostomia.

Xerostomia is common among patients with advanced cancer and is likely to contribute to oral disease. This study determined the prevalence of oral signs and symptoms among a group of 70 terminally ill cancer patients [25 male, 45 female; age range 42-88 (mean 66) years] complaining of oral dryness, and examined the associated oral microflora. Imprint cultures for yeasts, coliforms and staphylococci were collected from the tongue and, in denture wearers, from the plate and denture fitting surface. A swab was collected for culture of herpes simplex virus. 68 patients (97%) complained of oral dry

Hyposalivation and Xerostomia and Burning Mouth Syndrome: Medical Management.

In this chapter, the authors review the benefits of saliva and the destructive consequences of its loss. It is hoped that this will help their colleagues identify and treat patients before development of symptoms. Xerostomia is the subjective complaint of dry mouth or sensation of oral dryness. Hyposalivation is the actual decrease in measured salivary outflow. The authors discuss a compiled list of highly cited medications commonly used today that are linked with xerostomia and hyposalivation. There are numerous treatment modalities that are present, such as saliva substitutes, mouth rinses,

Xerostomia: an immunotherapy-related adverse effect in cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Xerostomia is an underrecognized adverse effect of immunotherapy (IO) that can significantly impact patients' quality of life by leading to poor nutritional status, dental caries, and oral candidiasis. The purpose of this case series was to describe the onset, severity, clinical course, and management of IO-induced xerostomia. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series conducted at an outpatient cancer center. Data collection was conducted via chart review. The severity of dry mouth symptoms was graded using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 5.0.

Analysis of medication-induced xerostomia in elderly Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the general condition of elderly xerostomia patients, we collected their background and medication data in order to potentially treat their xerostomia. It is critical to identify the drugs causing xerostomia in elderly patients. A total of 521 patients who were examined at the Xerostomia Clinic of Osaka University Dental Hospital were included in the study. We obtained patients' data on age, sex, number of primary illnesses, Saxon test scores, oral moisture test, subjective symptoms, and drug types from their clinical records. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was

Recombinant AAV9-TLK1B administration ameliorates fractionated radiation-induced xerostomia.

Salivary glands are highly susceptible to radiation, and patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy invariably suffer from its distressing side effect, salivary hypofunction. The reduction in saliva disrupts oral functions, and significantly impairs oral health. Previously, we demonstrated that adenoviral-mediated expression of Tousled-like kinase 1B (TLK1B) in rat submandibular glands preserves salivary function after single-dose ionizing radiation. To achieve long-term transgene expression for protection of salivary gland function against fractionated radiation, this study

Laser phototherapy as topical prophylaxis against radiation-induced xerostomia.

The common consequences of radiotherapy (RT) to the head and neck are oral mucositis, xerostomia, and severe pain. The aim of this study was to verify how laser phototherapy (LPT) used for oral mucositis could influence xerostomia symptoms and hyposalivation of patients undergoing RT. Patients were divided into two groups: 12 individuals receiving three laser irradiations per week (G1) and 10 patients receiving one laser irradiation per week (G2). A diode laser (660 nm, 6 J/cm(2), 0.24 J, 40 mW) was used until completely healing of the lesions or the end of the RT. At the first and last laser

Animal models for autoimmune disease-associated xerostomia and xerophthalmia.

Numerous models of exocrine tissue pathology related to autoimmune initiation of disease have been described, primarily by either immunohistology or histopathology. These model systems include inbred mouse strains that develop systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, graft vs. host disease, and diabetes. Commonly observed features of these mice include organized lymphocytic foci, composed of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells, in both the salivary and the lacrimal glands. However, only the diabetic mouse model (NOD) undergoes a corresponding loss in exocrine gland function related to the presenc

Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment of Radiotherapy-Induced Xerostomia: A Review.

In patients with head and neck cancer, irradiation (IR)-sensitive salivary gland (SG) tissue is highly prone to damage during radiotherapy (RT). This leads to SG hypofunction and xerostomia. Xerostomia is defined as the subjective complaint of dry mouth, which can cause other symptoms and adversely affect the quality of life. In recent years, diagnostic techniques have constantly improved with the emergence of more reliable and valid questionnaires as well as more accurate equipment for saliva flow rate measurement and imaging methods. Preventive measures such as the antioxidant MitoTEMPO, bot

Xerostomia: its prevalence and associations in the adult Australian population.

BACKGROUND: Little is known of the occurrence of dry mouth among Australians. AIM: To describe the prevalence and associations of xerostomia in a nationally representative sample of Australian adults. METHODS: Dentate persons aged 15+ years were asked 'How often does your mouth feel dry?' (response options 'never', 'occasionally', 'frequently' or 'always'). Those responding 'frequently' or 'always' were classified as xerostomic. RESULTS: The prevalence of xerostomia was 13.2% (95% CI 12.4, 14.0). It ranged from 9.3% (95% CI 7.9, 10.8) among 15-to-34-year-old to 26.5% (95% CI 23.3, 30.0) amo
