Malassezia yeasts (lipophilic yeasts), have been classified to include seven species. Although molecular methods such as sequencing of RNA and karyotyping were used to determine the species, traditional techniques are also being explored for their identification. These include studies of morphology and the utilization of individual lipids. Reports now show the predominance of individual species recovered from normal skin and from patients with diseases such as pityriasis versicolor and seborrhoeic dermatitis. The majority of systemic infections reported have been in the bloodstream of prematur

Conditions causing cyanide-resistant respiration were studied in the yeast Candida lipolytica. This type of respiration was found when the culture growing on glucose, glycerol, hexadecane, or acetate exhuasted the substrate and passed from the logarithmic to stationary growth phase; the same phenomenon can be induced by exhaustion of phosphorus or nitrogen in the glucose medium. The yeast culture growing on lactate, ethanol, pyruvate, alpha-ketoglutarate, malate, or succinate is characterized by cyanide-resistant respiration even at the beginning of the logarithmic growth phase. The values of

Depending on their composition, exudates oozing from trees can support or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Resins released by conifers have a strong antimicrobial effect. Sugar-rich saps are usually colonised by diverse microorganisms including yeasts. In this study, the yeasts associated with the polysaccharide-containing gums of cherry trees were examined. 227 strains were isolated from gums of 53 abandoned road-side and orchard sour cherry trees in 20 locations. 12 ascomycetous and 19 basidiomycetous species were found among the isolates. All grew very poorly on laboratory media contai

In industry, clarifying white grape juice may lead to the partial loss of lipids, which yeasts use to alter their plasma membrane composition to overcome the stresses associated with wine fermentation. In this work, a selection of yeasts isolated from the broader wine environment was screened for their lipid composition using flow cytometry, gravimetric assays and GCMS. Inactivated dry yeasts were produced from six of the screened yeast strains and were tested as lipid supplements in over-clarified Chenin Blanc grape juice, alongside pure lipid mixtures matching the lipid concentrations occurr

BACKGROUND: Species of Candida are the main cause of aggressive fungal infections in preterm newborns. These infections are linked to significant illness and death. Neonatal thrush is diagnosed by observing white patches on the surfaces of the mucosa of the mouth. Yeast is often associated with it. This study aimed to apply different techniques to characterize the yeasts associated with neonatal mouth thrush. Laboratory-based yeast species identification techniques (morphological and molecular) have been employed. Virulence genes were tested to compare experimental virulence assays and the pre

Yeasts, a large and diverse group of microorganisms, are gaining increasing interest from both the scientific community and industry. Yeasts' natural association with plants has endowed them with a broad repertoire of mechanisms that facilitate a beneficial coexistence. Despite the ability of certain yeast species to enhance plant growth and demonstrate broad-spectrum antifungal activities, their commercialization remains limited. This mini-review focuses on recent insights into the mechanisms by which yeasts stimulate plant growth and protect plants from certain diseases. Yeast species suppor

Micro-oxygenation (Mox) is a common technique used to stabilize color and reduce harsh astringency in red wines. Here, we investigate the role of residual sugars, phenolics, SO2, and yeast on the oxidation of wine in three studies. In a Mox experiment, populations of yeasts emerged after the loss of SO2, and this was associated with sharp increases in oxygen consumption and acetaldehyde production. No acetaldehyde production was observed without the presence of yeast. In an oxygen saturation experiment, unfiltered wines, in particular those with residual sugar >3 g/L, consumed oxygen more quic

Systemic infections of Candida species pose a significant threat to public health. Toxicity associated with current therapies and emergence of resistant strains present major therapeutic challenges. Here, we report exploitation of the probiotic properties of two novel, food-derived yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (strain KTP) and Issatchenkia occidentalis (strain ApC), as an alternative approach to combat widespread opportunistic fungal infections. Both yeasts inhibit virulence traits such as adhesion, filamentation, and biofilm formation of several non-albicans Candida species, including Can

Malassezia (M.) pachydermatis is the lipophilic yeast, which is normally present on the skin and in the ear canal of dogs but under certain conditions it may cause dermatitis and otitis. There is less known about the occurrence of lipid-dependent Malassezia species in dogs. The aim of this study was to detect whether lipid-dependent yeasts are part of the normal microflora in dogs. Two groups of animals were selected for comparison. The group of healthy dogs contained samples of 118 individuals and the group of dogs with cutaneous lesions or otitis externa comprised 328 dogs. The isolates of M

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2014eng
BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease, stage 5, undergoing hemodialysis treatment are frequently colonized by yeasts, with high chance of developing fungal infections. The objective of this study was to assess the presence of yeasts in the oral cavity of these individuals, associating findings with the presence of oral lesions and the use of dental prostheses.
METHODS: Clinical examinations of the oral mucosa were performed in 52 patients, when the use of removable dental prostheses and the presence of oral lesions were observed and recorded. Saliva samples were collected to identi

Interesting distribution patterns of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, aspirin) sensitive 3-hydroxy (OH) oxylipins were previously reported in some representatives of the yeast genus Eremothecium--an important group of plant pathogens. Using immunofluorescence microscopy and 3-OH oxylipin specific antibodies in this study, we were able to map the presence of these compounds also in other Eremothecium species. In Eremothecium cymbalariae, these oxylipins were found to cover mostly the spiky tips of narrowly triangular ascospores while in Eremothecium gossypii, oxylipins covered the whole spindle-shape

The effect of six various pesticides on the growth of yeasts isolated from agricultural soil was investigated. Two herbicides (with the effective substances lactofen and metazachlor), two fungicides (with the effective substances fluquinconazole and prochloraz), and two insecticides (with the effective substances cypermethrin + chlorpyrifos and triazamate) were tested. It is evident that there are considerable differences in inhibition effects of studied pesticides. The fungicide with the effective substance prochloraz inhibited the growth of majority of yeast strains. The insecticide triazama

Ninety-six strains of apiculate wine yeasts were studied for their ability to produce glycerol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in synthetic medium. Hanseniaspora guilliermondii produced smaller quantities of glycerol, acetaldehyde and hydrogen sulphide than Kloeckera apiculata, whereas the production of ethyl acetate and sulphur dioxide was found to be similar. Strains characterized by different capacities and properties were found for both species. The existence of apiculate strains differing in secondary compound production is of technological interest, as

A study of 552 female patients was undertaken to determine the frequency of yeast infections in women attending a V.D. clinic. The findings were as follows: (1) 207 of the 552 (37.5 per cent.) were found to have yeasts. (2) C. albicans accounted for 86 per cent. of these yeasts. (3) There was no difference in incidence related to age or seasonal variation. (4) Oral contraceptives increased the incidence of yeasts (43.2 per cent. on "the pill"; 33.2 per cent. not on the pill"), but the incidence of Trichomonas was decreased (6.8 per cent. on "the pill", 19.3 per cent. not on "the pill"). The relationship between oral and gastric yeasts and their role in the colonization of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach was studied. Four groups of 221, 7, 44, and 10 patients were used for the isolation of H. pylori and oral and gastric yeasts. In Group 1, gastric biopsies were used for the isolation of H. pylori and yeast, rapid urease test (RUT), staining with Gram's and hematoxylin & eosin (H&E), and immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods. In the other three groups, DNAs extracted from H. pylori and yeasts were used for the amplification of H. pylori-specific genes. Wet mounts of yeasts in G

Horses are characterized by a very high incidence of mycoses in comparison with most livestock and companion animals. They are highly susceptible to asymptomatic infections caused by yeast-like fungi, but the carrier state may be disrupted under the influence of autogenic and allogenic factors. The above leads to severe organ mycoses, often with an acute form of infection. "Carrier horses" may also act as vectors which transmit potential pathogens between individuals and species. The aim of this study was to identify yeast-like fungi and yeast colonizing the ontocenoses of healthy horses and t

Budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) are two popular model organisms for virus research. They are natural hosts for viruses as they carry their own indigenous viruses. Both yeasts have been used for studies of plant, animal and human viruses. Many positive sense (+) RNA viruses and some DNA viruses replicate with various levels in yeasts, thus allowing study of those viral activities during viral life cycle. Yeasts are single cell eukaryotic organisms. Hence, many of the fundamental cellular functions such as cell cycle regulation or programed
