Trends in childhood tuberculosis in Zambia: a situation analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To ascertain childhood tuberculosis (TB) trends, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection rates and multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) prevalence rates in Zambia. METHODS: A retrospective review of Zambian annual TB notification data and National TB Programme reports for a 7 year period (2004-2011). TB trends were stratified by age and HIV status. RESULTS: The total number of children notified during this period with all forms of TB was 40 976. A total of 2670 of 40 976 (6%) were smear-positive cases. Notification rates of all forms of childhood TB show a decline in trends f

Children's role in enhanced case finding in Zambia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate information dissemination by children and attitudes among children towards a school-based tuberculosis (TB) reduction strategy that asked children to address TB symptoms, testing and stigma in their homes. SETTING AND DESIGN: Qualitative research was conducted with schoolchildren before, and 2 years into, an intervention to promote early detection of TB using sputum microscopy in Zambia. The baseline study in 2005 involved 38 children at five sites. The evaluation in 2008 included 209 children in schools at four sites. Research with schoolchildren included discussions,

Prevalence and correlates of concurrent sexual partnerships in Zambia.

Concurrent partnerships may cause more rapid spread of HIV in a population. We examined how the prevalence of parallel relationships changed among men and women aged 15-49 in Zambia from 1998 to 2003 using data collected during the Sexual Behavior Surveys 1998, 2000, and 2003. Predictors of concurrent partnerships among men were studied by univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Thirteen percent of rural and 8% of urban men reported more than one ongoing relationship in 1998, and these proportions declined to 8% and 6%, respectively in 2003. The proportion of women reporting concurren

Case report: gnathostomiasis in two travelers to Zambia.

Gnathostomiasis is a systemic infection caused by migrating nematode larvae of the genus Gnathostoma. It is a zoonosis involving a wide variety of animals as intermediate and definitive hosts, and consumption of raw fish is the main risk factor. The condition is most commonly seen in southeastern Asia, but has been described in a number of other countries, all outside Africa. We report the infection in two travelers returning from southcentral Africa, who presented with non-specific symptoms and marked eosinophilia, and in whom schistosomiasis was initially suspected. The typical migratory ski

A sero-epidemiological study of bovine cysticercosis in Zambia.

A sero-epidemiological study of Taenia saginata cysticercosis was carried out in adult cattle in Zambia to determine the prevalence and study the influence of the farming system on the infection rate. Serum samples were examined for circulating parasite antigen by a monoclonal-based sandwich ELISA. Thirty-eight of 628 serum samples were found positive (prevalence 6.1%). Cysticercosis was significantly more prevalent in feedlots and in traditional farming systems than in dairy farms. It is suggested that the continuous man to animal contact and the use of casual workers in feedlots may be facto

Urban schistosomiasis in Lusaka, Zambia: a preliminary study.

A preliminary survey was conducted in Lusaka, Zambia to determine the extent of schistosomiasis transmission in the city. Stool and urine samples were collected from 240 children from seven schools selected to give a cross-sectional representation of the various socio-economic neighbourhoods of the city. In addition to the parasitological examination, students were questioned with respect to their knowledge of the disease and other epidemiological factors. In addition, water bodies near the schools were examined for the presence of snail hosts. Results of the survey suggest that schistosomiasi

Prevalence and distribution of trachoma in the Luapula Valley, Zambia.

A cross-sectional population based study was done to provide information on the extent to which xerophthalmia and trachoma contribute to blindness in the valley population. A total of 4271 children aged under 6 years and 2503 individuals aged 6 years and more were examined. The overall prevalence of trachoma for those under 6 years of age was 17.6%, the majority of which were graded as follicular trachomatous inflammation. The trend in age specific prevalence was highly significant (x2 = 160.6, p = 0.000). Prevalence by sex was also significantly different (z = 2.0, P less than 0.05). Among th

Prevalence of trypanosomiasis in cattle in south-west Zambia.

A trypanosomiasis survey was conducted in South-West Zambia. From a total of 3,346 cattle sampled 342 cattle showed a positive trypanosomiasis parasitaemia. During the survey trypanosome species and PCV values were also recorded. With simple statistical analysis populations with higher and lower prevalence rates were differentiated. The results indicated that the Kwando River Basin Tsetse Fly Belt and the Kafue River Basin Tsetse Fly Belt infested a larger area than originally assumed and that a link-up between both belts occurred or will occur in the near future.

Mutumwa Nchimi healers and wizardry beliefs in Zambia.

Mutumwa Nchimi practitioners in Zambia today are neotraditional healers who specialize in the diagnosis and curing of illnesses and misfortunes allegedly caused by wizardry (buloshi). Nchimi means 'witch-diviner' and Mutumwa means 'sent (by God)'. Their witch-divining practices are thus placed within the new biblical religious framework. Mutumwa Nchimi healers are contemporary African psychiatrists and psychotherapists who fully accept and work within the framework of the wizardry paradigm as the explanatory mechanism for a whole range of problems and illnesses experienced by a large number of

The prevalence of hookworm and of S. haematobium in rural Zambia.

The prevalence of hookworm and of S. haematobium in a representative sample of the rural population of seven provinces of Zambia was assessed during a National Nutrition Status Survey. A total of 7212 people of all age and sex groups were examined for hookworm, of whom 4920 (68%) provided a stool sample and of these 48.6% were positive. Regional figures ranged between 11.4% and 77.1%. No differentiation between species of hookworm was attempted nor was it possible to assess the worm load of the individuals surveyed. Hookworm is highly endemic within the rural areas and this is discussed in rel

Africa's challenged ENT services: highlighting challenges in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the ear, nose and throat (ENT) are common and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In many low income countries like Zambia, the high ENT disease burden has not received the required resources for treatment. We investigated ENT service provision in hospitals in Zambia by documenting the profile of hospitals offering ENT services and examining the country's ENT services with regards to human resource, infrastructure and availability of equipment based on the levels of care of various hospitals. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey conduct

Lymphatic filariasis in Luangwa District, South-East Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Past case reports and recent data from LF mapping surveys indicate that LF occurs in Zambia, but no studies have been carried out to document its epidemiology and health implications. The present study assessed infection, disease, transmission and human perception aspects of LF in an endemic area of Luangwa District, South-East Zambia, as a background for planning and implementation of control. METHODS: Two neighbouring rural communities were registered and a questionnaire survey undertaken. Clinical examination, and sampling of blood for circulating filarial antigens (CFA; marker

Antimicrobial sensitivity in enterobacteria from AIDS patients, Zambia.

Mycoplasma contamination of the licensed anthrax vaccine administered to military personnel has been suggested as a possible cause of Persian Gulf illness. Vaccine samples tested by nonmilitary laboratories were negative for viable mycoplasma and mycoplasma DNA and did not support its survival. Mycoplasma contamination of anthrax vaccine should not be considered a possible cause of illness.

The first Mpox case in Zambia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mpox, a viral infection caused by an Orthopoxvirus, has reemerged outside its historically endemic regions in Central and West Africa. This geographical expansion introduces a potential risk of transmission in Zambia, where geographic proximity and active trade routes increase vulnerability. We report the first confirmed case of Mpox in Zambia, involving a 32-year-old Tanzanian cross-border truck driver who presented to Mukando Health Post in Central Province, on 4 October 2024. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 32-year-old male patient of African descent whose symptoms included a h
