Assessing uptake of antimicrobials by Zea mays L. and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes in manure-fertilized soil.

Manure-borne antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are of environmental concern due to their potential to be transferred into the food-web via plant-uptake. In this study, Zea mays L. seeds were grown in three different soil conditions: soil without dairy manure, dairy manure-amended soil, and antimicrobial spiked dairy manure-amended soil, to investigate the potential uptake of antimicrobials and ARGs present in manure. The antimicrobial spiked manure consisted of dairy manure fortified with 1 mg/Kg of each individual antimicrobial compounds belonging to the sulfonamide and

Unravelling the protective mechanism: calcium alleviates nickel toxicity in maize (Zea mays) by modulating osmolytes and antioxidant systems.

Nickel (Ni) toxicity in agricultural soils, stemming from industrial activities, fertiliser use, and sewage sludge, severely disrupts plant growth by inducing oxidative stress. Calcium-based soil amendments have emerged as promising strategies for mitigating heavy metal toxicity; however, their comparative effectiveness and underlying protective mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluated the potential of lime and gypsum to mitigate Ni toxicity in maize (Zea mays). A pot experiment was conducted using Ni-contaminated soil amended with lime and gypsum applied at rates of 0

Physiological effects of silver nanoparticles and Pseudomonas stutzeri on Zea mays L. irrigated with effluent water from industry.

This study aimed to measure the bioremediation potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing maize growth under contaminated conditions. The irrigation water used was effluent from tube well and Hitech Industries Taxila (HIT), both containing Fe and Mn levels exceeding permissible limits. Tap water irrigation served as the control. Notably, the Cr levels in HIT effluent water were 280% higher than the permissible limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO 2011). The HIT water showed 64.11%, 200%, and 24% higher content of Ca, K, an

Effect of deficit irrigation on physiological, biochemical, and yield characteristics in three baby corn cultivars (Zea mays L.).

The main problem in the production of crops in arid and semi-arid regions of the world is the lack of water and its effect on the plant in the form of drought stress. Cultivation of key crops such as corn, which also requires a lot of water, is not possible in these areas except by applying water consumption management methods. Among the most important of these methods is deficit irrigation. The effect of deficit irrigation on relative water content (RWC), malondialdehyde (MDA), compatible osmolytes (proline and soluble sugars), antioxidant enzymes, and yield was studied in three baby corn cul

Effect of Mn Deficiency on Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism of Different Genotypes Seedlings in Maize (Zea mays L.).

Manganese deficiency critically impairs the function and stability of photosystem II (PSII) and negatively impacts crop growth and yield. However, the response mechanisms of carbon and nitrogen metabolism to Mn deficiency in different genotypes of maize and the differences in Mn deficiency tolerance are unclear. Herein, three different genotypes of maize seedlings (sensitive genotype: Mo17, tolerant genotype: B73, and B73 × Mo17) were exposed to Mn deficiency treatment for 16 days using liquid culture with different concentrations of MnSO4 [0.00, 2.23, 11.65, and 22.30 mg/L (control)]. Effect of Black Corn Anthocyanin-Rich Extract (Zea mays L.) on Cecal Microbial Populations In Vivo (Gallus gallus).

Black corn has been attracting attention to investigate its biological properties due to its anthocyanin composition, mainly cyanidin-3-glucoside. Our study evaluated the effects of black corn extract (BCE) on intestinal morphology, gene expression, and the cecal microbiome. The BCE intra-amniotic administration was evaluated by an animal model in Gallus gallus. The eggs (n = 8 per group) were divided into: (1) no injection; (2) 18 MΩ H2O; (3) 5% black corn extract (BCE); and (4) 0.38% cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G). A total of 1 mL of each component was injected intra-amniotic on day 17 of incuba

Direct and Indirect Transcriptional Effects of Abiotic Stress in Zea mays Plants Defective in RNA-Directed DNA Methylation.

Plants respond to abiotic stress stimuli, such as water deprivation, through a hierarchical cascade that includes detection and signaling to mediate transcriptional and physiological changes. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is well-characterized for its regulatory role in these processes in response to specific environmental cues. ABA-mediated changes in gene expression have been demonstrated to be temporally-dependent, however, the genome-wide timing of these responses are not well-characterized in the agronomically important crop plant Zea mays (maize). ABA-mediated responses are synerg

Efficiency of safety measures applied to a manual knapsack sprayer for paraquat application to maize (Zea mays L.).

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the safety of mixer/loaders and applicators of paraquat to maize crop by knapsack sprayers and to determine the efficacy of safety measures applied to the sprayers. Potential dermal exposure (PDE) was evaluated in 22 worker body parts. The Cu2+ cation of a copper-based fungicide was used as tracer in the spray solution. Sanitary pads and cotton gloves were used to collect the pesticide solution on the sampled body parts. It was observed that paraquat application in front of the applicator's body (0.5 and 1.0 m lance) is unsafe because PDE wa

Combined Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses of the Effects of Exogenous Trehalose on Salt Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.).

Soil salinization severely affects the quality and yield of maize. As a C4 plant with high efficiency in utilizing light and carbon dioxide, maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important crops worldwide. This study aims to investigate the pathways and mechanisms by which trehalose mediates the improvement of salt tolerance in maize through a combined analysis of physiology and transcriptomics. The results indicate that foliar application of trehalose treatment significantly increased maize biomass and antioxidant enzyme activity while reducing the H2O2 and Na+/K+ ratios in both the aerial a

Dissecting the Regulatory Network of Leaf Premature Senescence in Maize (Zea mays L.) Using Transcriptome Analysis of ZmELS5 Mutant.

Leaf premature senescence largely determines maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield and quality. A natural recessive premature-senescence mutant was selected from the breeding population, and near-isogenic lines were constructed using Jing24 as the recurrent parent. In the near-isogenic lines, the dominant homozygous material was wild-type (WT), and the recessive material of early leaf senescence was the premature-senescence-type ZmELS5. To identify major genes and regulatory mechanisms involved in leaf senescence, a transcriptome analysis of the ZmELS5 and WT near-isogenic lines (NILs) was performed

Modelling sulphate-enhanced cadmium uptake by Zea mays from nutrient solution under conditions of constant free Cd2+ ion activity.

A controlled hydroponic experiment was undertaken to investigate Cd uptake in relation to the activity of Cd species in solution other than the free ion (Cd2+) by maintaining a constant Cd2+ activity under variable SO42- and Cl- concentrations exposed to maize (Zea mays var. Cameron) plants. The objectives of these experiments were: (1) to distinguish and quantify the different uptake rates of free and inorganic-complexed Cd from nutrient solution, and (2) to model the uptake of Cd by maize with a Biotic Ligand Model (BLM) in a system which facilitates the close examination of root characteris

Feasibility and pitfalls of combining small subpopulations for genome-wide association analysis of maize (Zea mays L.) kernel traits.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) typically require large populations to achieve sufficient statistical power; however, maintaining large populations is labor-intensive and costly. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of improving GWAS detection power by strategically integrating small maize (Zea mays L.) subpopulations for kernel-related traits. Using high-throughput phenotyping of eight kernel traits, GWAS was conducted across four different population combinations. Expanding population size generally increased single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association strength and enable

Intra-Relations of Biochemical Profiles Defining the Germination Potential of Medium-Term Cold-Stored Maize (Zea mays L.) Seeds.

Understanding the biochemical networks governing seed longevity is essential for germplasm conservation. Integrating germination potential with biochemical profiling elucidates metabolic transitions during decadal cold storage. As phenotypic evidence of ageing, extended cold storage induces a uniform decline in germination energy, reaching a terminal "floor effect" characterised by the complete exhaustion of repair-and-defence strategies, whilst residual germination capacity averages 21%. Metabolic profiling reveals that prolonged storage causes systemic decoupling of the protein-sugar axis, l

Beyond Protein Abundance: Proteoform Diversity and Phosphoproteome Remodeling in Maize (Zea mays L.) Responding to Drought and Heat Stresses.

Drought and heat stresses are among the most important environmental constraints limiting maize (Zea mays L.) productivity worldwide. Over the past two decades, advances in mass spectrometry-based proteomics have generated extensive datasets describing proteins with altered abundance in maize tissues exposed to water deficit and elevated temperatures. These studies have identified numerous stress-responsive proteins involved in photosynthesis, energy metabolism, antioxidant defense, proteostasis, signaling pathways, and cellular homeostasis. In parallel, phosphoproteomic investigations have re

Unraveling the Role of Contaminants Reshaping the Microflora in Zea mays Seeds from Heavy Metal-Contaminated and Pristine Environment.

Heavy metal (HM) contaminants are the emerging driving force for reshaping the microflora of plants by eradicating the non-tolerance and non-resistant microbes via their lethal effects. Seeds served as a prime source of ancestral microbial diversity hereditary transfer from generation to generation. However, the problem arises when they got exposed to metal contamination, does metal pollutant disrupt the delicate balance of microbial communities within seeds and lead to shifts in their microflora across generations. In this study, the endophytic community within Zea mays seeds was compared acr

A DREB-Like Transcription Factor From Maize (Zea mays), ZmDREB4.1, Plays a Negative Role in Plant Growth and Development.

The DREB (dehydration-responsive element binding)-type transcription factors are classified into six subgroups, named A-1 to A-6. The members of DREB A-1 and A-2 subgroups have been reported to be involved in response to various abiotic stresses. However, there were only a few genes belonging to A-3 to A-6 subgroups to be reported. In this study, we cloned a DREB A-4 subgroup gene from maize (Zea mays), ZmDREB4.1, and analyzed its characteristics and functions. ZmDREB4.1 was expressed in roots, stems, and leaves at very low levels. It was not induced by any biotic or abiotic treatment. ZmDREB4

Removal of Chromium from Soils Cultivated with Maize (Zea Mays) After the Addition of Natural Minerals as Soil Amendments.

The efficiency of natural minerals, i.e. zeolite, bentonite and goethite, regarding the retention of chromium, from maize was examined. Specifically, 1.0 kg of soil, 1.0 g of soil amendment and either 50 mg L-1 Cr(III) or 1 mg L-1 Cr(VI) were added in plant pots. Then, seeds of maize were cultivated. Each treatment was repeated three times. The statistical results of the experiments were analyzed by LSD test. Cr(III) addition in soil has shown that zeolite was the only amendment that increased the dry weight. Zeolite and bentonite reduced significantly the total chromium in plants after the ad

Growth parameters and photosynthetic pigments in leaf segments of Zea mays exposed to cadmium, as related to protection mechanisms.

The influence of cadmium on growth parameters and photosynthetic pigment content was studied in maize leaf segments differing in tissue maturity. Experiments were carried out with maize seedlings Zea mays L. cv. Hidosil treated with 25, 50, 100, 150 and 200 microM Cd for 14 days under low light conditions. Tissue age-dependent decrease of fresh mass, dry mass and area of the leaf segments was correlated with Cd concentration in the growth medium. Cd induced changes in chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, and the specific areas and densities of the leaf segments were dependent on age and metal
