Maternal hydantoin ingestion during pregnancy results in a well defined clinical entity termed "fetal hydantoin syndrome". The clinical characteristics of this syndrome includes growth retardation, and congenital anomalies. Because folic acid is essential for protein synthesis and growth, and since hydantoin interferes with intestinal transport of folic acid, we postulated that part of the fetal hydantoin syndrome may be due to inhibition of placental folic acid by maternal hydantoin. BACKGROUND: We measured myocardial blood flow (MBF) and perfusion reserve (MPR) by dynamic CZT-SPECT and 82Rb-PET in patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease (CAD) and compared the accuracy of the two methods in predicting obstructive CAD.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with available coronary angiography data underwent 99mTc-sestamibi CZT-SPECT and 82Rb-PET cardiac imaging. Stress and rest MBF and MPR were calculated by both methods and compared. Diagnostic accuracies of CZT-SPECT and PET were also assessed using a receiver-operator-characteristic curve.

Serum samples from patients with many different kinds of infection were shown to contain a substance characteristic of leukocytic endogenous mediator. Generalized bacterial infections produced more leukocytic endogenous mediator than did localized ones; viral infections produced very little. The cytotoxicity of four different calcium hydroxide-based root canal sealers (Sealapex, Apexit, CRCS, and Endoflas FS) was tested using human gingiva fibroblasts. The fibroblasts were acquired from the attached gingiva of apparently healthy patients. The sealers were allowed to set for 24 and 48 h before being covered with a fibroblastic suspension. Abnormalities in zinc homeostasis are indicated in many human diseases, including Alzheimer disease (AD). 63Zn-zinc citrate was developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging probe of zinc transport and used in a first-in-human study in 6 healthy elderly individuals and 6 patients with clinically confirmed AD. Dynamic PET imaging of the brain was performed for 30 minutes following intravenous administration of 63Zn-zinc citrate (∼330 MBq). Subsequently, body PET images were acquired. Urine and venous blood were analyzed to give information on urinary excretion and pharmacokinetics.
