Oculocardiac reflex has been recognized as the result of mechanical stimulation to the orbital tissue. The authors encountered a case of severe arrhythmia due to oculocardiac reflex in a patient with a zygomatic fracture. Previous health examinations suggested no abnormalities in the heart in his schooldays, and the initial diagnosis of his arrhythmia as complete A-V block due to injury (using ECG and cardiac ultrasonography). Because his arrhythmia did not improve spontaneously, he underwent cardiac pacing. After repair of the fracture, his arrhythmia completely disappeared. The pacemaker was

68 patients with fractures of the zygomatic complex were studied. Of these, 56 had sensory disturbances of the infraorbital nerve. 50 patients were operated on and in 42% (21) some degree of persisting hypesthesia was found. No significant difference in outcome was found between the different methods of indirect reduction used. However, in 10 out of 12 patients in which direct fixation with transosseous wiring of the infraorbital margin was performed, persisting hypesthesia was encountered. In 3 out of 4 patients where the nerve was also explored primarily, the sensation returned totally. A se

BACKGROUND: To date, only limited case reports involving isolated bilateral zygomatic arch fractures exist. This fracture pattern is defined by the presence of bilateral zygomatic arch fractures and the absence of any other facial fractures. The purpose of this study was to systematically review a large trauma database to determine whether this fracture pattern exists and, if so, to elucidate the mechanism of injury and associated concomitant injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients admitted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma center from February of 1998 to December of 2009 w

INTRODUCTION: Indications for prophylactic antibiotic therapy in nonoperative, closed fractures of the orbit and zygoma remain controversial and are based on anecdotal data. The purpose of this study was to report the incidence of infectious sequelae among patients who presented to our institution with stated fractures and who were not administered prophylactic antibiotic therapy. The authors hypothesized that an increase in infectious complications would not be seen in these patients.
METHODS: The authors conducted a prospective single site study from October 2015 to December 2019. Patients

Zygomatic fracture is one of the most common mid-facial fractures. Zygomatic fracture often leads to open-mouth and chewing dysfunctions, which are often associated with pronounced zygomatic facial deformity, causing psychological and physiological problems in patients. The complicated anatomical structures associated with zygomatic fracture often make treatment difficult. Surgical navigation technology provides a new auxiliary method for improving the treatment results for zygomatic fracture. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the application of surgical navigation techno

The treatment of zygomatic fractures varies among surgeons, and the cosmetic and functional results are frequently less than optimal. A treatment guideline based on a simple classification of zygomatic fractures is presented. The emphasis is placed on the indications for closed and open reduction, consistent methods of three-dimensional alignment and fixation, and the management of concomitant infraorbital rim and orbital floor fractures. Postoperative results with regard to infraorbital nerve and maxillary sinus dysfunction, malar asymmetry, and orbital complications in the treatment of 1,025

Traditional three-point reduction may not restore proper projection of the malar prominence following a fracture dislocation of the zygoma if two of the three anterior points of realignment are comminuted. In such cases, reconstruction of the fourth or posterior projection, the zygomatic arch, increases the accuracy of the multidimensional reconstruction. Although the extended access approach required to repair the arch increases operative time and possibly length of hospitalization, its use is justified by the improved results in selected patients with severe injuries of the zygoma.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative ultrasonography (IOU) is an easy and quick image tool with no radiation hazard. Although it may be used in zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture(ZMC), there was no postoperative evaluation of reliability. In this paper, the authors aimed to compare the patients who used IOU in ZMC and are not using it, and confirmed its usefulness and reliability.
METHODS: This study was conducted on 126 patients who had a ZMC and zygomatic arch fracture(only) from March 2010 to May 2017. The authors performed postoperative 3D facial computed tomography on 60 patients who did not use

The purpose of the study was to measure the maxillary sinus sizes in patients with and without zygomatic bone fractures. In this cross-sectional study computed tomography data of a case group of consecutive treated patients with displaced zygomatic bone fractures were compared to a control group with mandibular fractures. Maxillary sinus sizes were measured in width, height, depth, and volume. We compared sinus sizes between the case and control group, followed by a subgroup analysis of slightly and severely displaced fractures using T-tests. We identified 89 cases, thereof 46 with slightly an

Aim Trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) manifests as typical hemodynamic perturbations including a sudden lowering of heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), cardiac arrhythmias, and asystole. In literature, TCR has been seen during ocular surgeries, Lefort fractures, and craniofacial surgeries. However, the prevalence of the TCR has not been studied in zygomatic complex fractures . The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of TCR in patients undergoing elevation with/without fixation of zygomatic complex fractures and isolated zygomatic arch fractures under local anesthesia and ge

PURPOSE: We evaluated the outcomes and differences in surgical time and hospitalization length for patients with an isolated zygomatic arch (ZA) fracture treated by percutaneous wire reduction with external fixation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed and developed a retrospective study of patients with isolated ZA fractures treated from 2014 to 2019. The predictor variable was the operative treatment, represented by percutaneous reduction with external fixation. The primary outcome variables were the surgical time and hospitalization length. Other variables, including functional and esthetic

The zygoma is located in the medial and lateral parts of the face, supporting the midfacial contour. The forward projection of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch expose them to frequent injury. Fractures of the zygoma can lead to displacement of the zygoma and the zygomatic arch, causing facial collapse deformity. For delayed zygomatic fractures, the loss of normal anatomical landmarks, caused by the malunion of the fracture lines and remodeling of the bony contour, makes it difficult to determine the correct positions of the zygomatic bones. In such cases, using traditional surgical methods, i

Zygomatic fractures are the second most common facial bone fractures encountered and treated by plastic surgeons. Stable fixation of fractured fragments after adequate exposure is critical for ensuring three-dimensional anatomic reduction. Between January 2008 and December 2010, 17 patients with zygomatic fractures were admitted to our hospital; there were 15 male and 2 female patients. The average age of the patients was 41 years (range, 19 to 75 years). We exposed the inferior orbital rim and zygomatic complex through a lateral brow, intraoral, and subciliary incisions, which allowed for vis

This retrospective study included 148 patients who were evaluated for postoperative long-term results after osteosynthesis of isolated zygoma fractures. The influence of open reposition of the zygomaticoalveolar crest to middle face symmetry was evaluated quantitatively with a zygometer. In dependence on operative management patients were divided into two groups: In group I zygomaticofrontal suture (1-point-fixation) and infra-orbital rim were exposed (2-point-fixation), followed by osteosynthesis. In group II additional exposure of zygomaticoalveolar crest was performed and if required osteos

One hundred and five patients with zygomatic fractures are presented. The main cause of the fracture was violence, followed by traffic accidents, fall and sport. In more than 25% of the cases, the fractures were accompanied by another fracture of the facial skeleton, viz maxillary, mandibular and nasal fractures. In severe cases of traffic accidents there were associated fractures in more than half of the cases. The follow-up study showed visible asymmetry of the face in 17 patients and sensory disturbances in 37 patients. We did not find the X-ray subdivision by Knight & North useful in the e

Fifty-two patients with zygomatic fractures were examined clinically and roentgenologically 1 to 4 years after treatment. Of these patients, 15 were treated with wiring fixation, 26 with antral packing using plastic tubing, and 11 with reduction only, without fixation. In the last group, the hospital stay was the shortest. These patients had also less complications and roentgenological changes when compared with the other groups. This was considered to be due to the fact that fractures not requiring fixation are initially less difficult than fractures requiring other treatment. At clinical exa
