Co-infection of Borrelia afzelii and Bartonella spp. in bank voles from a suburban forest.

We report the molecular detection of Borrelia afzelii (11%) and Bartonella spp. (56%) in 447 bank voles trapped in a suburban forest in France. Adult voles were infected by significantly more Borrelia afzelii than juveniles (p<0.001), whereas no significant difference was detected in the prevalence of Bartonella spp. between young and adult individuals (p=0.914). Six percent of the animals were co-infected by both bacteria. Analysis of the bank vole carrier status for either pathogen indicated that co-infections occur randomly (p=0.94, CI(95)=[0.53; 1.47]). Sequence analysis revealed that bank

Phylogenetic relationships of rodent pinworms (genus Syphacia) in Japan inferred from 28S rDNA sequences.

The 28S rDNA from nine species of the genus Syphacia collected in Japan was sequenced, and the phylogenetic relationship was inferred from multiple sequence alignment of 28S rDNA by the MAFFT program. Phylogenetic tree indicates that S. petrusewiczi, which was the only species belonging to the subgenus Seuratoxyuris, has diverged earlier than other rodent pinworms examined and was distantly separated from the others genetically. It was revealed that S. agraria and S. vandenbrueli, whose subgeneric status has not been specified, belonged to the subgenus Syphacia together with other 6 species. S

Efficient transmission and characterization of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease strains in bank voles.

Transmission of prions between species is limited by the "species barrier," which hampers a full characterization of human prion strains in the mouse model. We report that the efficiency of primary transmission of prions from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease patients to a wild rodent species, the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus), is comparable to that reported in transgenic mice carrying human prion protein, in spite of a low prion protein-sequence homology between man and vole. Voles infected with sporadic and genetic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease isolates show strain-specific patterns of spongiform

Sympatric Ixodes trianguliceps and Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on field voles (Microtus agrestis): potential for increased risk of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in the United Kingdom?

The importance of wild rodents as reservoirs of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens is considered low in the United Kingdom because, in studies to date, those parasitized by exophilic Ixodes ricinus ticks carry almost exclusively larvae and thus have a minor role in transmission cycles. In a cross-sectional study, 11 (6.7%) of 163 field voles (Microtus agrestis) captured at field sites in Northern England were PCR-positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The voles were found to act as hosts for both larval and nymphal I. ricinus and all stages of the nidicolous tick I. trianguliceps, and eight indivi

Identification of a new Borrelia species among small mammals in areas of northern Spain where Lyme disease is endemic.

The role of small mammals as reservoir hosts for Borrelia burgdorferi was investigated in several areas where Lyme disease is endemic in northern Spain. A low rate of infestation by Ixodes ricinus nymphs was found in the small mammal populations studied that correlated with the near-absence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato in 184 animals tested and with the lack of transmission of B. burgdorferi sensu lato to I. ricinus larvae that fed on them. In contrast, questing ticks collected at the same time and in the same areas were found to carry a highly variable B. burgdorferi sensu lato repertoire (B.

Taxonomic relationship of vole agent to Rochalimaea quintana.

We investigated the recent claim that the vole agent, a rickettsia-like microorganism isolated from wild voles by Baker in 1946, is actually a strain of Rochalimaea quintana, the etiological agent of trench fever. The two organisms were compared on the basis of percent guanine-plus-cytosine content, genome size, deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization, polypeptide composition, and serological relationships. Although the two organisms do have identical or nearly identical deoxyribonucleic acid base ratios and show some serological cross-reactions, they differ substantially by

Exposure to environmental radionuclides is associated with altered metabolic and immunity pathways in a wild rodent.

Wildlife inhabiting environments contaminated by radionuclides face putative detrimental effects of exposure to ionizing radiation, with biomarkers such as an increase in DNA damage and/or oxidative stress commonly associated with radiation exposure. To examine the effects of exposure to radiation on gene expression in wildlife, we conducted a de novo RNA sequencing study of liver and spleen tissues from a rodent, the bank vole Myodes glareolus. Bank voles were collected from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ), where animals were exposed to elevated levels of radionuclides, and from uncontamin

Detection of Francisella tularensis in voles in Finland.

Francisella tularensis is a highly virulent intracellular bacterium causing the zoonotic disease tularemia. It recurrently causes human and animal outbreaks in northern Europe, including Finland. Although F. tularensis infects several mammal species, only rodents and lagomorphs seem to have importance in its ecology. Peak densities of rodent populations may trigger tularemia outbreaks in humans; however, it is still unclear to which extent rodents or other small mammals maintain F. tularensis in nature. The main objective of this study was to obtain information about the occurrence of F. tular

Introduced Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus barberi) contribute more to lyme borreliosis risk than native reservoir rodents.

The variation of the composition in species of host communities can modify the risk of disease transmission. In particular, the introduction of a new host species can increase health threats by adding a new reservoir and/or by amplifying the circulation of either exotic or native pathogens. Lyme borreliosis is a multi-host vector-borne disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. It is transmitted by the bite of hard ticks, especially Ixodes ricinus in Europe. Previous studies showed that the Siberian chipmunk, Tamias sibiricus barberi, an introduced gro

A probabilistic model in cross-sectional studies for identifying interactions between two persistent vector-borne pathogens in reservoir populations.

BACKGROUND: In natural populations, individuals are infected more often by several pathogens than by just one. In such a context, pathogens can interact. This interaction could modify the probability of infection by subsequent pathogens. Identifying when pathogen associations correspond to biological interactions is a challenge in cross-sectional studies where the sequence of infection cannot be demonstrated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we modelled the probability of an individual being infected by one and then another pathogen, using a probabilistic model and maximum likelihood stat

Species interactions in a parasite community drive infection risk in a wildlife population.

Most hosts, including humans, are simultaneously or sequentially infected with several parasites. A key question is whether patterns of coinfection arise because infection by one parasite species affects susceptibility to others or because of inherent differences between hosts. We used time-series data from individual hosts in natural populations to analyze patterns of infection risk for a microparasite community, detecting large positive and negative effects of other infections. Patterns remain once variations in host susceptibility and exposure are accounted for. Indeed, effects are typicall

The biological and toxicological importance of molybdenum in the environment and in the nutrition of plants, animals and man. Part 2: Molybdenum in animals and man.

Molluscs and insects accumulate between 200 and 1050 microg Mo/kg of dry matter. Mice and vole species incorporate 350-650 microg Mo/kg, whereas shrews store 1500-2500 microg Mo/kg, i.e. insectivores have significantly higher molybdenum contents than rodents. The amounts of molybdenum accumulated by wild and domestic mammals are highest in the liver and kidneys, and lowest in muscle tissue and hair. The molybdenum status of mammals is reflected by all tissues tested except the heart. The best indicators of molybdenum deficiency and intoxication are liver, kidneys, blood and milk. The intrauter

Naturally attenuated, orally administered Mycobacterium microti as a tuberculosis vaccine is better than subcutaneous Mycobacterium bovis BCG.

Mycobacterium microti is phylogenetically closely related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is a member of that complex of organisms. It is a curved, acid-fast bacillus that is naturally attenuated with a narrow host range for Microtus species only. In this study, we confirm the unique susceptibility of voles to infection with M. microti and the relative resistance of mice with a significantly lower organism burden after 8 weeks of infection. In addition, histopathologic examination of lungs reveals a lack of cellular, granulomatous aggregates characteristically seen in murine M. tuberculosis

Loss of calcyphosine gene expression in mouse and other rodents.

Calcyphosine-for calcium binding and regulated by cyclic AMP through phosphorylation protein-is a target of both the cyclic AMP and the Ca(+2)-phophatidylinositol cascades first isolated from dog thyroid, and then from rabbit and human brain. Although the exact function of this 24kD protein is unknown, calcyphosine could be implicated in the cross-signaling between these cascades to coordinate cellular proliferation and differentiation. Here, we report the sequence of a pseudogene which is the murine calcyphosine homologue, and demonstrate that it represents the unique sequence homologous to t

Identification of a potential protective microfilarial antigen from Litomosoides carinii (Nematoda, Filarioidea).

The proteins of the filarial parasite Litomosoides carinii that are presented to the host in the course of a natural infection were assessed by surface and intrinsic labelling, microfilarial agglutination assays and ELISA. Surface labelling revealed several proteins present on all parasite stages which were recognised by infected animals. Only one major surface protein of 55 KD was found on microfilariae, while in all other stages (adult males, adult females and infective larvae isolated from pool animals) a range of proteins could be labelled. Immunisation with live microfilariae obtained fro

Microbacterium songi sp. nov., Microbacterium hanjuni sp. nov. and Microbacterium shimangi sp. nov., three novel salt-tolerant bacteria isolated from plateau voles (Neodon fuscus).

Six novel bacterial strains, designated P01ᵀ, P02, P04ᵀ, P05, P06ᵀ and P07, were isolated from the intestinal contents of the Neodon fuscus collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, PR China. Cells were aerobic, non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive and rod-shaped. Strains P01ᵀ, P04ᵀ and P06ᵀ can grow at 4-37°C and tolerate 10.0% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that the three strain pairs (P01T/P02, P04T/P05 and P06T/P07) were closely related to members of the genus Microbacterium, f

Rodent host population dynamics drive zoonotic Lyme Borreliosis and Orthohantavirus infections in humans in Northern Europe.

Zoonotic diseases, caused by pathogens transmitted between other vertebrate animals and humans, pose a major risk to human health. Rodents are important reservoir hosts for many zoonotic pathogens, and rodent population dynamics affect the infection dynamics of rodent-borne diseases, such as diseases caused by hantaviruses. However, the role of rodent population dynamics in determining the infection dynamics of rodent-associated tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria, have gained limited attention in Northern Europe, despite the m
