Schistosomiasis in the Gumara and Ribb irrigation project area, Ethiopia.

A survey of intestinal schistosomiasis and vector snails was conducted in the Gumara and Ribb Irrigation project located on the eastern side of Lake Tana, northwest Ethiopia. Within the project area, stool specimens from 1273 people were examined by the thick smear method. The average infection rate for Schistosoma mansoni was 1.6%. Two localities, Addis Zemen and Yifag, located just outside the project area, were also examined, the former showing an S. mansoni prevalence of 34% (75/223) and the latter 18% (18/101) among school children. In Debre Tabor, the provincial capital 50 km away from t

Schistosoma mansoni: the effects of a subcurative dose of praziquantel on the ultrastructure of worms in vivo.

The in vivo effects of a subcutaneously-administered subcurative dose (200 mg/kg body weight of mouse) of praziquantel on the structure of Schistosoma mansoni was investigated. Worms were collected at varying times post-treatment and processed for both SEM and TEM examination. Praziquantel caused extensive structural changes to both male and female worms within 15 min of treatment although variations in the amount of drug-induced damaged was observed between male and female worms. In female worms although some tegumental vacuolation was observed within 15 min, the major structural change was a

Effect of the Aswan High Dam on prevalence of schistosomiasis in Egypt.

An increase in the prevalence of schistomiasis in Egypt, as a result of the Aswan High Dam, has for long time been predicted because of reclamation of land and conversion of annual flooding (basin irrigation) into perennial irrigation in Upper Egypt. Two aspects, neglected in the predictions, have been investigated in the present study, and these are: the ecological changes, relevant to the transmission of the disease, in the Nile itself, and those in irrigation canals and drains in areas which had been under perennial irrigation before the constriction of the dam. The findings indicate that t

An 11-year epidemiological analysis of schistosomiasis in Ecuador: Investigating a non-endemic, neglected, and challenging-to-identify parasitic disease.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected disease caused by parasites of the genus Schistosoma and transmitted by snails of the genus Biomphalaria. At least five species have the potential to infect humans living in or visiting tropical areas worldwide. In Latin America, Schistosoma mansoni is particularly common; however, it has not been reported in Ecuador. In this study, we assess the available official data on schistosomiasis in Ecuador to describe the prevalence of this neglected disease. We conducted a nationwide study to determine the demographic and spatial distribution patterns of schistosomiasi

Studies on the molluscicidal activity of Agave angustifolia and Pittosporum tobira on schistosomiasis transmitting snails.

In the search for new molluscicidal plants for controlling the snail vectors of schistosomiasis, laboratory evaluation was made to assess the molluscicidal activity of Agave angustifolia and Pittosporum tobira plants against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails. Results indicated that both plants have promising molluscicidal activity as the LC90 of the dry powder of both plants was 120 ppm. Both plants showed marked cercaricidal and miracidicidal potencies against S. mansoni larvae. The LC90 of both plants (120 ppm) killed most B. alexandrina eggs within 24 h of exposure. The sub-lethal concentrati

Confirmed local endemicity and putative high transmission of Schistosoma mansoni in the Sesse Islands, Lake Victoria, Uganda.

The Sesse Islands, in the Ugandan portion of Lake Victoria, have long been considered a low transmission zone for intestinal schistosomiasis. Based on observations of high prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infection in the northern-most islands of this archipelago, a follow-up survey was conducted to ascertain whether transmission was endemic to this island group, combining parasitological and malacological surveys. Prevalence of intestinal schistosomiasis was again observed to be high, as was intensity of infections which, combined with low reported incidence of treatment, suggests that chemo

Acute schistosomiasis outbreak in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais: alert about the risk of unnoticed transmission increased by growing rural tourism.

The present article describes the occurrence of 17 cases of acute schistosomiasis in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. All individuals affected took a bath in a swimming pool of a holiday resort that was provided with water from a nearby brook. The apparently clean water and the absence of snails in the pool gave the wrong impression that there was no risk for infection. During a malacological survey at the site snails of the species Biomphalaria glabrata were found and tested positive for Schistosoma mansoni. All the patients live in the middle-class area

[Assessment of schistosomiasis and other intestinal parasitoses in school children of the Bambuí municipality, Minas Gerais, Brazil].

This work was carried out with the purpose of determining the prevalence of intestinal parasitoses in the school children of Bambuí, through parasitological examinations (direct and Kato-Katz methods) and reevaluating the snails' breeding places described in the county. Of the 2,091 school children examined, 20.1% had at least one parasitic infection. Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba coli, Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm are the most frequent parasites, with a prevalence of 6.2%, 6.2%, 4.8% and 1.4%, respectively. The hookworms were significantly more frequent among students from the rural area an

Worm development in hamsters infected with unisex and cross-mated Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium.

Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium coexist in Egypt and in other areas in Africa, and people frequently are infected with parasites of both species. The effects of the interactions between worms of both sexes of the 2 species on development and egg laying were evaluated in vivo by infecting hamsters with cercariae from Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus snails infected with single miracidia. In hamsters with unisex infections, male worms of both species were small. Schistosoma mansoni females were stunted and partially mature but did not contain eggs. Schistosoma haema

Schistosomiasis in Dogon country, Mali: identification and prevalence of the species responsible for infection in the local community.

The prevalence of schistosomiasis amongst the Dogon people in 4 villages and one school of the Bankass district of Mali was determined during 2 surveys in 1992; 1398 urine and 1199 stool samples were examined. The most common schistosome was Schistosoma haematobium, with an overall prevalence of 51.3%; S. mansoni had a prevalence of 12%. No S. intercalatum egg was seen in the stools. Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus were found in pools at the base of the Dogon cliffs; Bulinus forskalii was found in smaller numbers in brick pits. Two isolates from urine samples of children were iden

The host-parasite interface in molluscan schistosomiasis: biotin as a probe for sporocyst and hemocyte surface peptides.

Hemocytes of Biomphalaria glabrata mediate the internal defensive response which, in resistant snail strains, kills sporocysts of Schistosoma mansoni. Lacking a gut, the sporocyst has only its tegument to interact with the host milieu (hemolymph). We have, therefore, focused our study on the surface-exposed proteins of hemocytes and sporocyst tegument. Using gentle biotinylation of living systems, labelled proteins were studied after SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and transfer to nitrocellulose. Results validate the utility of surface biotinylation in studies of host and parasite interfaces. A low d

How do microplastics alter molluscicidal activity? Effects of weathered microplastics and niclosamide in developing freshwater snails.

Despite the wide distribution and persistence of microplastics (MPs), their interactive effects with molluscicides are unknown. Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects 236.6 million people worldwide. Niclosamide (NCL) is the only molluscicide recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and it is used to control the population of Schistosoma spp.'s intermediate host. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate of the interaction between polyethylene (PE) MPs and NCL, and their associated toxicity in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Say 1818). Weathered PE MPs were charac

Malacological Survey and Spatial Distribution of Intermediate Host Snails in Schistosomiasis Endemic Districts of Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, due to S. mansoni, is prevalent in Rwanda. However, there is a paucity of information related to the abundance, species, distribution, and infectivity of Schistosoma intermediate host snails. METHODS: Snails were collected from 71 sites, including lakeshores and wetlands. Snails obtained were morphologically identified, and cercariae were shed using standard procedures. Cercariae were molecularly characterized using PCR. GPS coordinates were used to generate geospatial maps of snail distribution that were overlaid with geospatial distribution of schistosomiasis am

Algal-Derived Halogenated Sesquiterpenes from Laurencia dendroidea as Lead Compounds in Schistosomiasis Environmental Control.

Schistosomiasis has been controlled for more than 40 years with a single drug, praziquantel, and only one molluscicide, niclosamide, raising concern of the possibility of the emergence of resistant strains. However, the molecular targets for both agents are thus far unknown. Consequently, the search for lead compounds from natural sources has been encouraged due to their diverse structure and function. Our search for natural compounds with potential use in schistosomiasis control led to the identification of an algal species, Laurencia dendroidea, whose extracts demonstrated significant activi

Rural tourism: a risk factor for schistosomiasis transmission in Brazil.

This paper reports an outbreak of acute schistosomiasis among 38 tourists who rented a country house in the district of Igarapé, the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, during a holiday period in 2006. A total number of 32 individuals were positive for Schistosoma mansoni. Results of stool examinations revealed individual S. mansoni egg counts per gram of faeces (epg) ranging from 4-768 epg with a geometric mean egg count of 45. The most frequent clinical symptoms were abdominal pain (78.1%), headache (75%), fever (65.6%), dry cough (65.2%) and both diarrhoea and asthenia (59.4%). A

Molluscicidal and schistosomicidal activities of a steroidal saponin containing fraction from Dracaena fragrans (L.).

The steroidal saponin-containing fraction from methanolic extract of Dracaena fragrans (Family: Agavaceae) was tested for molluscicidal and ovicidal activities against Biomphalaria alexandrina and Bulinus truncatus, the snail vectors of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium in Egypt, respectively. It was also tested for schistosemicidal activity in vitro on adult S. mansoni and against the free-living miracidia and cercariae of the parasite. The homogenated soft body of B. alexandrina was used to determine the effect of the saponin fraction on total protein, albumen, aminotransferase enzymes

[Epidemiology of schistosomiasis mansoni in a low endemic area].

We discuss the epidemiological patterns of schistosomiasis mansoni in areas with low transmission in Brazil. We define as areas of low endemicity those where the prevalence is less than 10%, the number Schistosoma mansoni eggs per gram of feces (epg) is less than 96, and carriers are asymptomatic. Data are from the county of Pedro de Toledo in the Ribeira Valley (São Paulo State) and were collected randomly according to the aggregate pattern of S. mansoni within the hosts. We suggest the replacement of parasitological methods by more sensitive and specific serological techniques. The main risk

Mixed strain schistosome infections of snails and the evolution of parasite virulence.

Mathematical models often propose that within-host competition between parasites can be a major factor in the evolution of increased parasite virulence. Kin selection predicts that as the coefficient of relatedness between infecting parasites decreases, the benefits of competition to individual genotypes increases. Thus where parasites can adjust their behaviour in response to current conditions, higher virulence is predicted in multiple genotype infections. There is limited experimental data, however, regarding the effects of mixed strain infections on host and parasite fitness. We investigat
