Covalent triazine-based framework: A promising adsorbent for removal of perfluoroalkyl acids from aqueous solution.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are highly stable, persistent, and ubiquitous in the environment with significant concerns growing with regards to both human and ecosystem health. Due to the high stability to both biological and chemical attack, the only currently feasible approach for their removal from water is adsorbent technology. The main objective of this study was to assess a covalent triazine-based framework (CTF) adsorbent for removal from aqueous solutions of perfluoro C4, C6, and C8 carboxylates and sulfonates including the two C8s most commonly monitored, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)

The effect of olestra on the absorption, excretion and storage of 2,2',5,5' tetrachlorobiphenyl; 3,3',4,4' tetrachlorobiphenyl; and perfluorooctanoic acid.

Mice were gavaged with either (14)C-labeled 2,2'5,5' tetrachlorobiphenyl; 3,3',4,4' tetrachlorobiphenyl; or perfluorooctanoic acid. Absorption of these compounds was determined by assay of feces collected for 48 h after the gavage. Part of the animals received test diets containing olestra during this 48-hour period to determine its effect on absorption of the compounds. Mice that received the diet without olestra during this period were divided into groups that either continued the diet without olestra or changed to a diet containing olestra. These diets were continued for 7 days, and a secon

Decline in perfluorooctanesulfonate and other polyfluoroalkyl chemicals in American Red Cross adult blood donors, 2000-2006.

In 2000, 3M Company, the primary global manufacturer, announced a phase-out of perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (POSF, C8F17SO2F)-based materials after perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS, C8F17SO3-) was reported in human populations and wildlife. The purpose of this study was to determine whether PFOS and other polyfluoroalkyl concentrations in plasma samples, collected in 2006 from six American Red Cross adult blood donor centers, have declined compared to nonpaired serum samples from the same locations in 2000-2001. For each location, 100 samples were obtained evenly distributed by age (20-69 ye

Unsupervised dietary-behavioral profiling identifies PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and metal exposure patterns in Korean adults.

Beyond "what and how much you eat," modern nutritional epidemiology is paying attention to how dietary and behavioral patterns, which combine food selection and the context of cooking, packaging, and ingestion, organize health and environmental exposure. This cross-sectional secondary analysis used adult data from the 4th Korea National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS Cycle 4, 2018-2020; n = 4239). Multi-question variables related to diet, cooking, packaging, and ingestion behaviors were mapped into a latent space through unsupervised learning, clusters were derived, and the exposure level

Delayed Upper Gastrointestinal Motility in Mice Treated with Oral Iron Tablets.

Oral iron preparations for iron deficiency anemia have major side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, which are gastrointestinal symptoms widely known to occur with gastrointestinal motility disorders. However, it is unclear whether these symptoms are associated with gastrointestinal motility. This study aimed to explore the correlation between oral iron preparations that cause nausea and vomiting with gastrointestinal motility. Sodium ferrous citrate (SFC), a common ingredient in iron preparations, was used in this study. Gastrointestinal motility in mice was measured using the 13C-octanoic

PFOA exposure causes kidney injury via disruption of lipid metabolism mediated by PPARα signaling pathway: An integrated analysis.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) that can accumulate in living organisms and cause damage to multiple organs and systems in the human body. The kidney is viewed as a key organ affected by PFOA, but the exact mechanism by which PFOA exposure causes kidney damage remains unclear. We selected data from 13,804 participants aged > 12 years old from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2003 to 2018 to analyze the relationship between PFOA and kidney injury. In addition, in the animal experiment, twenty adult male SD rats wer

Itaconic Acid Alleviates Perfluorooctanoic Acid-Induced Oxidative Stress and Intestinal Damage by Regulating the Keap1/Nrf2/Ho-1 Pathway and Reshaping the Gut Microbiota.

Itaconic acid (IA) is recognized for its potential application in treating intestinal diseases owing to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) can accumulate in animals and result in oxidative and inflammatory damages to multi-tissue and organ, particularly in the intestinal tract. This study aimed to explore whether IA could mitigate intestinal damage induced by PFOA exposure in laying hens and elucidate its potential underlying mechanisms. The results showed that IA improved the antioxidant capacity of laying hens and alleviated the oxidative damage i

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and associations with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child cohort.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that are slow to break down in the environment and widely detected in humans. Epidemiological evidence suggests that prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a legacy PFAS, is linked to gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. However, the relationship between other PFAS, which are structurally similar, and these outcomes remains largely understudied, despite biologic plausibility. Here, we examined associations between serum PFAS mixtures in relation to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy within a birth

Perfluoroalkyl substances exposure and risk of polycystic ovarian syndrome related infertility in Chinese women.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a family of synthetic, fluorinated organic compounds. They have been widely used in industrial applications and consumer products and widespread in the environment, wildlife and human. Experimental and epidemiologic evidence suggested that PFASs are capable of interfering with endocrine processes and have potential reproductive and developmental toxicities. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), one of the main reasons of female infertility, is a common endocrine disorder in reproductive age women. We performed a case-control study to evaluate associations be

Association between perfluorooctanoic acid exposure and degranulation of mast cells in allergic inflammation.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has wide applications, including as a raw material for converted paper and packaging products. With the widespread use of PFOA, concerns regarding its potential environmental and health impacts have increased. In spite of the known hepatotoxicity and genotoxicity of PFOA, correlation with PFOA and allergic inflammation is not well known. In this study, the effect of PFOA on the degranulation of mast cells and mast cell-mediated allergic inflammation in the presence of FcεRI cross-linking was evaluated. In immunoglobulin (Ig) E-stimulated mast cells, PFOA increased

Structural Insights into Substrate Binding of Brown Spider Venom Class II Phospholipases D.

Phospholipases D (PLDs), the major dermonecrotic factors from brown spider venoms, trigger a range of biological reactions both in vitro and in vivo. Despite their clinical relevance in loxoscelism, structural data is restricted to the apo-form of these enzymes, which has been instrumental in understanding the functional differences between the class I and II spider PLDs. The crystal structures of the native class II PLD from Loxosceles intermedia complexed with myo-inositol 1-phosphate and the inactive mutant H12A complexed with fatty acids indicate the existence of a strong ligand-dependent

Clinical effects of STW 5 (Iberogast) are not based on acceleration of gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis.

STW 5, a herbal extract, is effective for the treatment of symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). However, its mode of action is still unclear and a modulation of gastric motility is hypothesized. This multicentre, placebo-controlled double-blind study addressed the question of whether STW 5 accelerates gastric emptying in patients with FD and gastroparesis. One-hundred and three patients diagnosed with FD were randomly assigned to a treatment with either STW 5 or a liquid placebo for 28 days. The primary end point of the study was a change of a validated gastrointestinal symptom
