Pathological changes in appendectomy specimens including the role of parasites: A retrospective study of 2400 cases of acute appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infestation of the appendix is uncommon. Parasitic infections can cause inflammation in the appendix and can imitate acute appendicitis clinically. Enterobius vermicularis and Taenia species are among the most common parasitic agents causing acute appendicitis. OBJECTIVE: We have studied the ratio of parasites causing acute appendicitis in appendectomy specimens and whether there is any relationship between the type of the parasite, histopathological type of acute appendicitis, age of the patient, and gender of the patient in the appendectomy cases. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Incidence and outcomes of unexpected pathology findings after appendectomy.

PURPOSE: Pathologic evaluation of the appendix after appendectomy is routine and can identify unexpected findings. We evaluated our experience in children undergoing appendectomy to review the clinical course of patients with unexpected appendiceal pathology. METHODS: After IRB approval, a retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent appendectomy from January 1, 1995 to March 1, 2011. Patient demographics, diagnosis, pathological findings, disease outcomes, and treatment were collected only on patients with abnormal pathology. RESULTS: 3602 patients underwent appendectomy. 11

Common intestinal parasites.

Intestinal parasites cause significant morbidity and mortality. Diseases caused by Enterobius vermicularis, Giardia lamblia, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, and Entamoeba histolytica occur in the United States. E. vermicularis, or pinworm, causes irritation and sleep disturbances. Diagnosis can be made using the "cellophane tape test." Treatment includes mebendazole and household sanitation. Giardia causes nausea, vomiting, malabsorption, diarrhea, and weight loss. Stool ova and parasite studies are diagnostic. Treatment includes metronidazole. Sewage treatment, proper handwashing,

Enterobius vermicularis Appendiceal Colic.

Enterobius vermicularis associated appendiceal colic and acute appendicitis are rarely encountered in the United States. The 9-year-old patient described in this case presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting consistent with acute appendicitis and was brought to the operating room for an appendectomy. Intraoperatively a pinworm, E. vermicularis, was visualized and the presumptive diagnosis of acute appendicitis was revised to E. vermicularis associated appendiceal colic. Retrospective review of the preoperative imaging demonstrates the first reported ultrasonogra

Enterobius vermicularis: a rare cause of appendicitis.

OBJECTIVE: Although appendicitis is one of the most common causes of emergency surgery, parasites are rarely found associated with inflammation of the appendix. The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis in surgically removed appendices, as well as to determine its possible role in the pathogenesis of appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all the appendices removed during the last 20 years at a tertiary university hospital. Appendices removed during the course of another intra-abdominal procedure were excluded from the study. RESULTS: All 108

Strain-related effects of fenbendazole treatment on murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Parasitic infections are a concern in animal facilities, in view of their influence on physiological processes and the immune status of animals. Pinworms are effectively controlled with the anthelminthic fenbendazole (FBZ, [5-(phenylthio)-1H-benzamidazol-2-yl]carbamic acid methyl ester; C(15)H(13)N(3)O(2)S); however, questions remain as to whether prolonged FBZ exposure alters the disease course in specific experimental models, such as those pertaining to the immune system. We report that a three-month regimen of FBZ-medicated feed severely affected the onset and disease severity of murine exp

Transmission of Enterobius vermicularis eggs through hands of school children in rural South Africa.

Enterobius vermicularis is a helminth that is difficult to control, is found globally, especially in crowded conditions, and can be transmitted from person to person by contaminated hands. A newly developed method for the quantification of helminth eggs on hands was tested among schoolchildren in a rural South African region to look at the role hands play in helminth infection, and to determine the risk factors for hand contamination. The study found 16.6% of participants' hands positive for helminth eggs, with E. vermicularis most commonly identified. Egg concentrations on hands ranged from 0
