Evoked potentials in albinos: efficacy of pattern stimuli in detecting misrouted optic fibers.

Misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections associated with retinal hypopigmentation has been found to be a general phenomenon in mammals, including humans. Anomalous optic pathway projections of albinos may be detected by recording visually evoked potentials (VEPs). To determine the efficacy of various stimulus conditions for detecting misrouted optic fibers, we compared flash, modulated light, pattern reversal and pattern onset/offset (appearance/disappearance) stimuli. Pattern onset/offset were found superior in detecting anomalies of misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections. As

Differential resilience against complete optic nerve transection across visual areas.

Understanding how the central visual system responds to complete optic nerve transection (ONT) is critical for evaluating the feasibility of whole-eye transplantation (WET), as envisioned by the 2024 ARPA-H THETA program. This study evaluates the dynamitic neuronal and synaptic changes within the posterior visual pathway-the superior colliculus (SC), lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), and primary visual cortex (V1)-after optic nerve crush (ONC) and ONT in mice models. Complementary observations were obtained in non-human primates. Both injury models induced time-dependent alterations, but degen

Perceptual fading without retinal adaptation.

A retinally stabilized object readily undergoes perceptual fading and disappears from consciousness. This startling phenomenon is commonly believed to arise from local bottom-up sensory adaptation to edge information that occurs early in the visual pathway, such as in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus or retinal ganglion cells. Here we use random dot stereograms to generate perceivable contours or shapes that are not present on the retina and ask whether perceptual fading occurs for such "cortical" contours. Our results show that perceptual fading occurs for "cortical" contours an

The optic radiation and the cerebellar peduncles in adolescents with first-admission schizophrenia--a diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have found gray matter alterations in the cerebellum and in the visual system in both adults and adolescents with schizophrenia. The present study was conducted to investigate whether white matter tracts associated with these regions are also affected in the early stages of the disorder. METHODS: Using a 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and fiber tracking, the optic radiations and the middle cerebellar peduncles were examined in 13 adolescents with first-admission schizophrenia and 13 healthy controls matched for age, gender, school t

Developmental switch in the polarity of experience-dependent synaptic changes in layer 6 of mouse visual cortex.

Layer 6 (L6) of primary sensory cortices is distinct from other layers in that it provides a major cortical input to primary sensory thalamic nuclei. L6 pyramidal neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) send projections to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), as well as to the thalamic reticular nucleus and higher order thalamic nuclei. Although L6 neurons are proposed to modulate the activity of thalamic relay neurons, how sensory experience regulates L6 neurons is largely unknown. Several days of visual deprivation homeostatically adjusts excitatory synapses in L4 and L2/3 of V1 depending

Human glaucoma and neural degeneration in intracranial optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus, and visual cortex.

The pathology of glaucoma has been extensively studied at the level of the retina and optic nerve head. Here the first clinicopathological case of human glaucoma is reported demonstrating degenerative changes in the brain involving the intracranial optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus, and visual cortex. Pathological evidence of neural degeneration in this patient is correlated with clinical, optic nerve head, visual field, and neuroradiology findings. Neuropathology in the glaucoma brain is compared to age matched controls. In the presence of advanced human glaucoma with 50% visual field l

Central pontine myelinolysis manifested by temporary blindness: a possible complication of lithium toxicity.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is removal of myelin material from neural elements in a way that is not clearly known as yet. In this case of CPM, blindness was encountered and was thought to be "hysterical." The blindness went away after four months. After reviewing the literature we suggest the CPM was a complication of lithium toxicity which affected the lateral geniculate nucleus which produced blindness.

Calcitonin-gene related peptide is an evolutionarily conserved marker within the amniote thalamo-telencephalic auditory pathway.

The distribution of neurons and fibers containing calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) was mapped in the thalamo-telencephalic auditory pathways of four amniote species, rats, pigeons (Columba livia), caiman (Caiman crocodilus), and turtles (Pseudemys scripta). In colchicine-treated turtles and pigeons, numerous CGRP+ perikarya were observed in the auditory relay nucleus of the thalamus (n. reuniens of reptiles, and n. ovoidalis of birds). In pigeons, these neurons were most abundant in the outer circumference of the nucleus and were not observed without colchicine pretreatment. In the telen

Observations on cortical blindness and on vascular lesions that cause loss of recent memory.

Two long-surviving cases of cortical blindness are described, one total and the other total except for detection of sudden transitions from light to darkness and darkness to light. Both suffered from severe defect of recent memory, which lasted a month in one, and till death after nearly six years in the other. One patient survives. Necropsy findings on the other are given.

Peripheral and central distribution of major branches of the facial taste nerve in the carp.

The major pathways of the peripheral facial taste system in the carp, Cyprinus carpio, are the maxillary (Max), mandibular (Mand), palatine (Pal) and recurrent nerve rami. The peripheral distribution of the sensory fibers of these branches (B) was determined by means of electrophysiological techniques. Max.B., Mand.B. and Pal.B., each of which arises from the gasserian-geniculate ganglionic complexes, were found to innervate respectively, the upper lip and the adjacent skin, the internal and external surface of the lower lip region, and the upper lip and the anterior palate, ipsilaterally. Full-length axon regeneration in the adult mouse optic nerve and partial recovery of simple visual behaviors.

The mature optic nerve cannot regenerate when injured, leaving victims of traumatic nerve damage or diseases such as glaucoma with irreversible visual losses. Recent studies have identified ways to stimulate retinal ganglion cells to regenerate axons part-way through the optic nerve, but it remains unknown whether mature axons can reenter the brain, navigate to appropriate target areas, or restore vision. We show here that with adequate stimulation, retinal ganglion cells are able to regenerate axons the full length of the visual pathway and on into the lateral geniculate nucleus, superior col

Neuronal activity in the lateral geniculate nucleus associated with ponto-geniculo-occipital waves lacks lamina specificity.

Ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves are spontaneously occurring field potentials recorded in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) just prior to and during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Facilitated discharge rates of LGN neurons are associated with PGO waves. In kittens during the critical period of visual system development, both visual experience and PGO waves appear capable of influencing the course of development through activity-dependent mechanisms. Retinal innervation of LGN segregates into eye-specific laminae and is critical to supporting the role of binocular visual experien

Stimulus-elicited behavior in rapid eye movement sleep without atonia.

Alert wakefulness (W) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) are remarkably similar on several measures of brain activity, but 2 differences in REM are reduced sensory responsiveness and atonia in postural muscles. Pontine tegmental lesions create REM without atonia (REM-A), releasing motor behavior. In 9 cats, we studied the acoustic startle reflex (ASR), orienting (OR), and ponto-geniculo-occipital waves (PGOE) elicited by tones during W, REM, REM-A, and non-REM (NREM). OR occurred in W and REM-A, being most complete in cats with the most elaborate spontaneous behavior. ASR occurred in W, NREM,

Intravitreal gene therapy preserves retinal function in a canine model of CLN2 neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

CLN2 neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis is a rare hereditary neurodegenerative disorder characterized by deleterious sequence variants in TPP1 that result in reduced or abolished function of the lysosomal enzyme tripeptidyl peptidase 1 (TPP1). Children with this disorder experience progressive neurological decline and vision loss starting around 2-4 years of age. Ocular disease is characterized by progressive retinal degeneration and impaired retinal function culminating in total loss of vision. Similar retinal pathology occurs in a canine model of CLN2 disease with a null variant in TPP1. A study

Adrenergic innervation of the monkey thalamus: an immunohistochemical study.

The distribution and function of the neurotransmitter adrenaline in the primate brain are poorly understood. Biochemical studies have shown the presence of adrenaline or its biosynthetic enzyme, phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase, in the rat and human thalamus. However, the distribution of the adrenergic fibres in the thalamus has only been demonstrated in rats. We study the adrenergic innervation of the macaque monkey thalamus using immunohistochemistry against phenyletanolamine-N-methyltransferase. The distribution of phenyletanolamine-N-methyltransferase-immunoreactive fibres is markedl

[Effects of lumbar epidural anesthesia on brainstem auditory response].

Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) are used increasingly to monitor the integrity of neural pathways in anesthetized patients. To evaluate the effect of epidural anesthesia on the central nervous system, we studied the effects of lumbar epidural anesthesia with lidocaine on the ABR in 10 patients. The seven peak latencies (waves I-VII) and amplitudes (waves I-VII) of the ABR were recorded before and 15 min after epidural anesthesia. Peak latencies of waves III, IV, V, VI, VII increased after epidural anesthesia compared with control values. Amplitude of waves II only decreased significantly fo
