Comparative life cycle assessment of a year-round grazing system vs. a hay-feeding system.

Grasslands cover around 4.5 million hectares in Florida, primarily consisting of C4 warm-season forage species, under different managements. In North Florida, beef-cattle operations go through a cool season, a warm season, and a fall gap, which marks the overlap between both seasons. The most widespread practice among producers involves grazing during the warm season and feeding hay during the winter. However, this requires many off-farm inputs and is associated with greater indirect and direct emissions. Thus, a more sustainable alternative is necessary. Year-round grazing has potential, sinc

[Simulation of Multi-scenario Land Use Change and Carbon Storage in Protected Areas of Beijing].

Accurate quantification and assessment of terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage is the key to revealing the regional carbon cycle. As an indispensable ecological carbon pool in nature, protected areas can make multiple contributions toward the realization of carbon neutrality in the region. At present, Beijing has basically formed a scientific and rational system of protected areas. An in-depth analysis of the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of its carbon storage is not only of great significance for continuously consolidating and enhancing its carbon sink capacity but also as th

Association between Capillaria hepatica infection-induced alterations in gut microbiota and estrogen expression in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii).

BACKGROUND: Capillaria hepatica, a zoonotic parasite, is present in the population of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) and has been a central issue in ecological studies regarding its impact on host populations. Brandt's voles are known for their extremely high reproductive capacity, and the population explosion of Brandt's voles have occurred multiple times in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia over the past few decades. However, the mechanisms underlying the population dynamics of Brandt's voles, particularly in response to C. hepatica infection, remain poorly understood. Given the criti

Highly conserved and extremely variable: The paradoxical pattern of toxin expression revealed by comparative venom-gland transcriptomics of Phalotris (Serpentes: Dipsadidae).

Although non-front fanged snakes account for almost two-thirds of snake diversity, most studies on venom composition and evolution focus exclusively on front-fanged species, which comprise most of the clinically relevant accidents. Comprehensive reports on venom composition of non-front fanged snakes are still scarce for several groups. In this study, we address such shortage of knowledge by providing new insights about the venom composition among species of Phalotris, a poorly studied Neotropical dipsadid genus. Phalotris are known for their specialized venom delivery system and toxic venoms,

Studies on the embryonic development and larval infection potential of the stomach bot flies, Gasterophilus pecorum.

Endangered Przewalski's horses have faced severe infections from Gasterophilus pecorum (Diptera, Gastrophilidae) in Xinjiang's Kalamaili Nature Reserve (KNR). This study examines G. pecorum's development and infection patterns in embryonic and larval stages, crucial for understanding horse botfly disease in desert grasslands. For the incubation of G. pecorum fertilized eggs, we established the six distinct temperature gradients: 16 °C, 20 °C, 24 °C, 28 °C, 30 °C, and 32 °C. Using the least squares method, we calculated the correlation between the developmental threshold temperature of the eggs

Bioretention filtration prevents acute mortality and reduces chronic toxicity for early life stage coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) episodically exposed to urban stormwater runoff.

As the human population of western North America continues to expand, widespread patterns of urban growth pose increasingly existential threats to certain wild stocks of Pacific salmon and steelhead (Oncorhynchus sp.). Rainfall previously absorbed into the soils of forests and grasslands falls instead on pavement and other hardened surfaces. This creates stormwater runoff that carries toxic metals, oil, and many other contaminants into salmon-bearing habitats. These include freshwater streams where coho salmon (O. kisutch) spawn in gravel beds. Coho salmon embryos develop within a thick eggshe

Pronounced increases in nitrogen emissions and deposition due to the historic 2020 wildfires in the western U.S.

Wildfire outbreaks can lead to extreme biomass burning (BB) emissions of both oxidized (e.g., nitrogen oxides; NOx = NO+NO2) and reduced form (e.g., ammonia; NH3) nitrogen (N) compounds. High N emissions are major concerns for air quality, atmospheric deposition, and consequential human and ecosystem health impacts. In this study, we use both satellite-based observations and modeling results to quantify the contribution of BB to the total emissions, and approximate the impact on total N deposition in the western U.S. Our results show that during the 2020 wildfire season of August-October, BB c

Precipitation, Climate Change, and Parasitism of Prairie Dogs by Fleas that Transmit Plague.

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are hematophagous ectoparasites that can reduce the fitness of vertebrate hosts. Laboratory populations of fleas decline under dry conditions, implying that populations of fleas will also decline when precipitation is scarce under natural conditions. If precipitation and hence vegetative production are reduced, however, then herbivorous hosts might suffer declines in body condition and have weakened defenses against fleas, so that fleas will increase in abundance. We tested these competing hypotheses using information from 23 yr of research on 3 species of colonia

Effects of dietary selenium deficiency and supplementation on liver in grazing sheep: insights from transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mineral elements play a crucial role in supporting the life activities and physiological functions of animals. However, numerous studies have revealed that in some geographical areas and certain grazing situations, grazing livestock frequently suffers from mineral element deficiencies due to the loss of mineral elements from grassland forages, such as selenium (Se). To shed fresh light on this issue, this study aims to investigate the impact of dietary Se deficiency and supplementation on the liver of grazing sheep in these challenging conditions. METHOD: This study involved 28 gr

Exploring the influencing factors of scrub typhus in Gannan region, China, based on spatial regression modelling and geographical detector.

Scrub typhus is a significant public health issue with a wide distribution and is influenced by various determinants. However, in order to effectively eradicate scrub typhus, it is crucial to identify the specific factors that contribute to its incidence at a detailed level. Therefore, the objective of our study is to identify these influencing factors, examine the spatial variations in incidence, and analyze the interplay of two factors on scrub typhus incidence, so as to provide valuable experience for the prevention and treatment of scrub typhus in Gannan and to alleviate the economic burde

Validation of an ear tag-based accelerometer system for detecting grazing behavior of dairy cows.

The objective of the study was to develop a grazing algorithm for an ear tag-based accelerometer system (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) and to validate the grazing algorithm with data from a noseband sensor. The ear tag has an acceleration sensor, a radio chip, and temperature sensor for calibration and it can monitor rumination and detect estrus and localization. To validate the ear tag, a noseband sensor (RumiWatch, Itin and Hoch GmbH, Liestal, Switzerland) was used. The noseband sensor detects pressure and acceleration patterns, and, with a software program specific to the noseband, press

Genetic structure in the southernmost populations of black-and-gold howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) and its conservation implications.

Black-and-gold howler monkeys Alouatta caraya, are arboreal primates, inhabitants of Neotropical forests, highly susceptible to the yellow fever virus, considered early 'sentinels' of outbreaks, and thus, of major epidemiological importance. Currently, anthropogenic habitat loss and modifications threatens their survival. Habitat modification can prevent, reduce or change dispersal behavior, which, in turn, may influence patterns of gene flow. We explored past and contemporary levels of genetic diversity, elucidated genetic structure and identified its possible drivers, in ten populations (n =

Formation, transformation and transport of black carbon (charcoal) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Black carbon (BC) is ubiquitous in terrestrial environments and its unique physical and chemical properties suggest that it may play an important role in the global carbon budget (GCB). A critical issue is whether the global production of BC results in significant amounts of carbon (C) being removed from the short-term bio-atmospheric carbon cycle and transferred to the long-term geological carbon cycle. Several dozen field and laboratory based studies of BC formation during the burning of biomass have been documented. Findings are difficult to interpret because they have been expressed in an

Responses of stable vegetation to drought accumulation timescales and time lags in the Weihe River Basin.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to distinguish drought accumulation timescale from response timing in stable vegetation in the Weihe River Basin. METHODS: We analyzed MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and ERA5-Drought standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) data for 2003-2024 on the native 0.25° drought grid. Persistent land-cover classification required at least 18 valid annual classifications and a modal-class fraction of at least 80%. Four accumulation timescales (1, 3, 6, and 12 months) and 13 window-end lags (0-12 months) formed 52 response-exposure combinations. We

Farmers' perceptions, management practices, and economic impacts of cattle tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestations in northwest Ethiopia.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are significant ectoparasites that impair cattle production and threaten the livelihoods of Ethiopian livestock producers. However, there is no evidence about farmers' perceptions, tick management methods, and the resulting economic losses. This study assessed cattle owners' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about tick infestations and estimated the annual economic losses caused by ticks in northwest Ethiopia. Between March 2022 and June 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire with 413 randomly selected cattle owners. A

Precipitation gradients restructure rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial communities and potential nitrogen-cycling gene profiles in a desert steppe.

Precipitation change can restructure microbially mediated soil nitrogen (N) cycling in water-limited grasslands, yet whether rhizosphere and bulk soils respond differently remains unclear. An in situ precipitation-gradient experiment in the desert steppe of Inner Mongolia combined soil physicochemical measurements, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and piecewise structural equation modelling. Treatments included 50% reduced precipitation (W-50%), ambient precipitation (CK), 50% increased precipitation (W+50%), and 100% increased precipitation (W+100%). Soil water content was 37.2% higher under W

Constrained Carbon Partitioning: A Self-Trained Physics-Informed Machine Learning Model Refines GPP Estimates From Eddy Covariance Measurements.

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is the largest term in the global carbon budget but cannot be directly observed. We present a knowledge-guided machine learning (KGML) framework that partitions eddy covariance-measured net ecosystem exchange (NEE) into gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RECO) with partitioned water vapor fluxes and CO2 flux source areas from 36 U.S. National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) towers. The KGML is guided by hard physical constraints that enforce mass balance and 'soft' theoretical expectations including optimal stomatal response to vapo
