Correlating Eucalyptus leaf metabolomics with preference of the bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus.

Eucalyptus species are among the most planted trees in forestry production, an ever-increasing commercial activity worldwide. Forestry expansion demands a continuous search for preventive and sanitary measures against pests and diseases. Massive application of phytosanitary products is incompatible with the forestry sector, so forest health management must be based on other principles. In this context, studies on insect plant relationships mediated by plant metabolites may contribute information relevant to plant resistance and genotype selection. In this study, we analyzed the leaf metabolome

Nilaparvata lugens salivary protein NlG14 triggers defense response in plants.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a serious insect pest on rice. It uses its stylet to collect sap by penetrating the phloem and at the same time it delivers saliva into the host plant, which can trigger a reaction. The molecular mechanisms by which BPH salivary proteins result in plant responses are poorly understood. In this study, we screened transcriptomic data from different BPH tissues and found a protein specific to the salivary gland, NlG14, that could induce cell death in plants. We determined that NlG14 is uniquely found in the insect

Sublethal exposure to pyriproxyfen does not impair the abilities of the backswimmer Buenoa amnigenus to prey upon Aedes aegypti larvae.

Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analogue that is commonly used to control the immature stages of mosquitoes in both artificial and natural water reservoirs. Recently, concerns have been raised regarding the community effectiveness of pyriproxyfen in preventing vector-transmitted diseases. Such concerns have been based on the unintended effects on non-target organisms and the selection of resistant mosquito populations. This investigation was, therefore, conducted to evaluate the toxicity of pyriproxyfen to Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae and the backswimmer Buenoa amnigenus (Hemip

Adult damselflies as possible regulators of mosquito populations in urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Dragonfly and damselfly larvae have been considered as possible biocontrol agents against young instars of mosquito vectors in urban environments. Yet our knowledge about adult odonate predation against mosquito adults is scarce. We quantified daily and annual predation rates, consumption rates and prey preferences of adult Hetaerina vulnerata male damselflies in an urban park. A focus on predation of mosquito species was provided, quantified their arbovirus (dengue, chikungunya and Zika) infection rates and biting activity. RESULTS: Foraging times of H. vulnerata overlapped with

Species-specific patterns of shelter exploitation in Chagas disease vectors of the genus Rhodnius.

Triatomines are insect vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi¸ the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Several species belonging to the genus Rhodnius (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) have been reported inhabiting domestic and peridomestic environments in different regions of Latin America. However, behavioral and sensory ecology aspects related to their use of shelters have been poorly studied. The objective of the present study was to characterize how bug density, illumination and thigmotactic information affect the use of shelters by three species belonging to the Rhodnius prolixus species complex. We evalua

Chagas vectors Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) and Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911): chromatic forms or true species?

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a parasitic infection transmitted by "kissing bugs" (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) that has a huge economic impact in Latin American countries. The vector species with the upmost epidemiological importance in Ecuador are Rhodnius ecuadoriensis (Lent & Leon, 1958) and Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811). However, other species such as Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911) and Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) act as secondary vectors due to their growing adaptation to domestic structures and their ability to transmit the parasite to humans. The latter two

"Armed to the teeth": The multiple ways to survive insecticidal and predatory challenges in Aedes aegypti larvae.

Environmental pollutants, such as insecticides, can alter the equilibrium of aquatic ecosystems, particularly those closely located to human occupations. The use of such anthropogenic compounds frequently results in the selection of resistant individuals. However, how the underlying insecticide resistance mechanisms interplay with the abilities of the resistant individuals to cope with other environmental challenges (e.g., predators) has not received adequate attention. Here, we evaluated whether resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Dipte

Food Suitability and Population Dynamics of Lorryia formosa (Acari: Tydeidae).

Lorryia formosa Cooreman (Acari: Tydeidae) is a species of mite commonly associated with citrus in many countries including the United States. A survey report in 1957 suggested phytophagous nature, while other studies claimed that L. formosa populations are associated with honeydew producing insects and sooty mold and it acts as a sanitizing agent. We investigated the effect of various diets on the survival and progeny production of L. formosa on excised leaves and the survival and potential to cause feeding damage to leaves of potted plants in a greenhouse study. A 2-yr field survey of a mand

Risk assessment of various insecticides used for management of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri in Florida citrus, against honey bee, Apis mellifera.

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), is a major pest of citrus trees worldwide. A wide variety of insecticides are used to manage D. citri populations within citrus groves in Florida. However, in areas shared by citrus growers and beekeepers the use of insecticides may increase the risks of Apis mellifera  L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) loss and contaminated honey. The objective of this research was to determine the environmental toxicity of insecticides, spanning five different modes of action used to control D. citri, to A. mellifera. The insecticides investig

Targeting octopamine synthesis genes LsTDC and LsTβH impairs reproduction, feeding and virus transmission in the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus.

BACKGROUND: Octopamine (OA) is an important biogenic amine in insects, and regulates multiple physiological and behavioral processes. Tyrosine decarboxylase (TDC) and tyramine β-hydroxylase (TβH) are critical enzymes in the biosynthesis of OA. The small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus is a major rice pest and causes serious damage by transmitting plant viruses, such as rice stripe virus (RSV). However, the functions of TDC and TβH remain largely unknown in rice planthoppers. RESULTS: We cloned LsTDC and LsTβH from L. striatellus. LsTDC was significantly enriched in the 4th instar nym

A tyramine receptor gene LsTAR2 is involved in reproduction and feeding in the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus.

Tyramine (TA) is an important biogenic amine present in the central nervous system of insects, and mediates a variety of physiological and behavioral functions via tyramine receptors (TARs). However, TARs have not yet been characterized in planthoppers, and their physiological functions remain poorly understood in rice pests. Here, we cloned a tyramine receptor gene (LsTAR2) from the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus, one of the most destructive rice pests. LsTAR2 shares high sequence identity with its orthologous receptors, and is closely related to its corresponding receptor gro

α-Copaene is a potent repellent against the Asian Citrus Psyllid Diaphorina citri.

The Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, severely threatens citrus production worldwide by transmitting the greening (= Huanglongbing)-causing bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. There is growing evidence that the push-pull strategy is suitable to partially mitigate HLB by repelling ACP with transgenic plants engineered to produce repellents and attracting the vector to plants with a minimal disease transmission rate. Species that pull ACP away from commercial citrus plants have been identified, and transgenic plants that repel ACP have been developed. The concept of a repell

Eco-friendly chitosan-ZnO quantum dot-dinotefuran nanoparticles with bidirectional conductivity and controlled release for effective Sogatella furcifera.

Sogatella furcifera (S. furcifera) is a serious pest of rice in China. Excessive use of conventional insecticides has led to environmental pollution and other associated issues. The rapid advancement of nanotechnology offers new perspectives for developing innovative pest management strategies. Therefore, we designed a nanopesticide system in which dinotefuran (DNF) was encapsulated within chitosan (CS) and further integrated with ZnO quantum dots (ZnO QDs). The resulting formulation (DNF@CS-P-ZnO) displayed an average particle size of 33.3 nm and a loading efficiency of 17.74 %. Under acidic

Effects of Periostracum Cicadae on Cytokines and Apoptosis Regulatory Proteins in an IgA Nephropathy Rat Model.

Periostracum cicadae, the cast-off shell of the cicada Cryptotympana pustulata Fabricius, is used in traditional Chinese medicine for its diaphoretic, anticonvulsive, sedative, antipyretic, and antiallergic effects. However, the exact pathogenesis of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) remains unclear, thereby hindering investigations to identify novel therapeutic agents. A rat IgAN model was established by administration of bovine serum albumin, lipopolysaccharide, and carbon tetrachloride, which simultaneously established blood stasis and a heat syndrome model. The animals were sacrificed to

Estimation of the age and amount of brown rice plant hoppers based on bionic electronic nose use.

The brown rice plant hopper (BRPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), is one of the most important insect pests affecting rice and causes serious damage to the yield and quality of rice plants in Asia. This study used bionic electronic nose technology to sample BRPH volatiles, which vary in age and amount. Principal component analysis (PCA), linear discrimination analysis (LDA), probabilistic neural network (PNN), BP neural network (BPNN) and loading analysis (Loadings) techniques were used to analyze the sampling data. The results indicate that the PCA and LDA classification ability is poor, but the

Insecticide susceptibilities in populations of two rice planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens and Sogatella furcifera, immigrating into Japan in the period 2005-2012.

BACKGROUND: The brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens and the whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera are both important pests on rice throughout Asia. The major cause of recent outbreaks is thought to be the development of insecticide resistance. Thus, the authors monitored insecticide susceptibilities in populations of these two insects immigrating into Japan in the period 2005-2012. Ten insecticides were tested, including members of the organophosphate, carbamate, pyrethroid, neonicotinoid and phenylpyrazole groups. RESULTS: The LD50 values of N. lugens against imidacloprid increased fr

Diversity of culturable gut bacteria associated with brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and their role in imidacloprid degradation.

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major pest of rice across Asia and has developed significant metabolic resistance to multiple insecticides. Microbiome-mediated insecticide resistance is of emerging interest in various insect pests, including N. lugens. In this study, we assessed the diversity of culturable gut bacteria in imidacloprid-susceptible (IMI-S) and imidacloprid-resistant (IMI-R) populations of N. lugens and their potential to degrade imidacloprid. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis identified 13 bacterial isolates, representing ten families fr

Geminiviral C2 proteins promote virus transmission by subverting plant defenses upon infestation of non-vector herbivores.

BACKGROUND: Insect vectors are responsible for transmitting the majority of plant viruses. While the interplays between insect vectors and viruses have been extensively investigated, how other organisms associated with the shared host plants of the insect and virus impact virus transmission dynamics, and the corresponding viral countermeasures, remain largely unknown. RESULTS: We explored the modulation of whitefly-mediated transmission of geminiviruses by two non-vector herbivores and the role of viral C2 proteins. The infestation of cotton bollworm induced the accumulation of jasmonic acid
