[Clinical and histologic findings after several weeks of intraocular tamponade with perfluorodecalin].

Perfluorocarbon residues sometimes remain in the eye following vitreoretinal procedures employing liquid perfluorocarbons. According to the literature, one or two droplets do not appear to damage the ocular tissue. The question of whether this also applies to larger volumes was investigated in two eyes of two patients. Both eyes were injected with perfluorodecalin for removal of luxated lens in two patients. In one patient approximately 3 ml perfluorodecalin remained in the eye for 3 months postoperatively, in the other patient approximately 4 ml for 4 months. The eye of the first patient deve

[Surgical management and its complications of the dislocated lens].

Dislocated lenses of 218 patients (230 eyes) were performed lens extraction and followed up 1-120 months, averaging 12 months. The results were satisfactory in that the visual acuity was improved in 160 eyes (69.6%), including 145 eyes (63.0%) of visual acuity 0.1 or over and 96 eyes (41.7%) 0.3 or over. Among the 70 eyes (30.4%) of poor results, 45 (64.3%) were due to preoperative conditions, and 25 (35.7%) due to surgical complications. It is important that intraocular hemorrhage, vitreous loss, inflammation and secondary glaucoma be guarded against during and after the operation.

Long-term myofibroblast persistence in the capsular bag contributes to the late spontaneous in-the-bag intraocular lens dislocation.

Late spontaneous in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation is a complication presenting 6 months or later after cataract surgery. We aimed to characterize the cells in the lens capsules (LCs) of 18 patients with spontaneous late in-the-bag IOL dislocation. Patients' average age was 82.6 ± 1.5 years (range 72-98), and most of them had pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX). Cells from the LCs were positive for myofibroblast (αSMA), proliferation (Ki-67, PCNA), early lens development/lens progenitor (SOX2, PAX6), chemokine receptor (CXCR4), and transmembrane (N-cadherin) markers, while negative fo

Mechanism of Disease: Recessive ADAMTSL4 Mutations and Craniosynostosis with Ectopia Lentis.

Craniosynostosis, the premature fusion of the calvarial bones, has numerous etiologies. Among them, several involve mutations in genes related to the TGFb signaling pathway, a critical molecular mediator of human development. These TGFb pathway-associated craniosynostosis syndromes include Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) and Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome (SGS). LDS and SGS have many similarities common to fibrillinopathies, specifically Marfan syndrome (MFS), which is caused by mutations in FBN1. Historically discriminating features of MFS from LDS and SGS are (1) the presence of ectopia lentis (the

Long-term corneal endothelial cell loss after cataract surgery. Results of a randomized controlled trial. Oxford Cataract Treatment and Evaluation Team (OCTET).

Three hundred thirty-three eyes were randomly assigned to three treatments for cataract: group A, intracapsular extraction plus contact lens; group B, intracapsular extraction plus Federov implant (Federov I lenses were made by Rayners Ltd, United Kingdom, based on a design by Professor Fyodorov); and group C, extracapsular extraction plus iridocapsular implant. Endothelial cell loss estimated at one and six months and yearly up to four years showed significantly greater loss in the two implant groups from one year onward. Continuing loss slowed down after the third year, except for the intrac

[Phacovitrectomy-Influence of the timing of intraocular lens implantation on the corneal endothelium].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In phacovitrectomy the cataract is usually operated on first including implantation of the intraocular lens (IOL) before beginning vitrectomy but the IOL can also be implanted following vitrectomy. This variation avoids optical impairments from corneal opacities and the lens rim, improves the visualization of the retina during surgery and might thereby reduce intraoperative complications, such as peripheral retinal tears or IOL subluxation. It might, however, increase stress on the corneal endothelium. The aim of this study was, therefore, to compare postoperative corne
