[Research progress on intervention of active components of Bupleuri Radix in metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease based on multiple parallel strike theory].

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide. Due to its complex pathogenesis, there is currently no specific drug capable of intervening throughout the entire pathological process, nor a unified and definitive treatment protocol in clinical practice. In traditional Chinese medicine, MAFLD falls under the category of diseases such as "hypochondriac pain" and "liver disease", with the core pathogenesis being "stagnation of the liver meridian and obstruction of Qi movement". The pharmacological characteri

Molecular Basis of Behaviorally Active Terpenoid Volatile Recognition by Odorant-Binding Proteins in Tomicus pilifer.

Tomicus pilifer is an important wood-boring forest pest in China, and its host localization and intraspecific communication rely on the perception of volatile chemical cues. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying odor recognition in this species remain largely unknown. In this study, we systematically investigated the behaviorally active volatiles present in the hindgut and feces of T. pilifer and elucidated the roles of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) in their recognition. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified eight volatile compounds common to both hindgut and fecal s

Floral scent profiling and candidate gene discovery in Hesperis oreophila.

Hesperis oreophila is a wild cruciferous aromatic plant endemic to North China, valued for both ornamental appeal and fragrance development. However, the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying floral scent formation in Hesperis have not been systematically elucidated. In this study, HS-SPME-GC-MS-based VOC profiling was performed across four floral developmental stages, including small bud (P1), large bud (P2), initial bloom (P3), and full bloom (P4), whereas transcriptome sequencing was conducted for three scent-transition stages, P2, P3, and P4. A total of 1,211 volatile organic compound

Floral dynamics in the protandrous flowers of Bauhinia variegata (Fabaceae): phase-specific morphology, scent, and nectar production.

Protandry in Bauhinia variegata is expressed through coordinated changes in floral morphology, scent composition, secretory activity, and nectar presentation, whereas petal reflectance remains stable; molecular docking further indicates that key phase-associated volatiles are structurally compatible with a bee odourant-binding protein, supporting mechanistic plausibility of olfactory detectability without demonstrating behavioral attraction. Bauhinia variegata exhibits protandrous flowers in which floral morphology, scent production, and nectar presentation change through anthesis. Here, we ex

Indoor air quality and its determinants in underground shopping malls in Korea.

Underground shopping malls (USMs) are often open or semi-open environments with interconnected passageways, resulting in the sharing of indoor air. However, indoor air quality (IAQ) within these spaces can vary due to many diverse emission sources. We investigated the relationships between IAQ and geographical areas, as well as IAQ and store types, within USMs, in Korea. In 2020, we studied 10 different USMs, with a total of 128 outlets. We conducted comprehensive IAQ assessments (including measurements of fine particles (PM2.5), aldehydes, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) in stores, pas

Inhibition of autophagy and induction of glioblastoma cell death by NEO214, a perillyl alcohol-rolipram conjugate.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumor, exhibiting a high rate of recurrence and poor prognosis. Surgery and chemoradiation with temozolomide (TMZ) represent the standard of care, but, in most cases, the tumor develops resistance to further treatment and the patients succumb to disease. Therefore, there is a great need for the development of well-tolerated, effective drugs that specifically target chemoresistant gliomas. NEO214 was generated by covalently conjugating rolipram, a PDE4 (phosphodiesterase 4) inhibitor, to perillyl alcohol, a naturally occurring monoterpene

Spontaneous and odour evoked activity in single avian olfactory bulb neurones.

Extracellular single unit recordings were made from various depths in the left olfactory bulb of ten anaesthetised, freely breathing adult hens (Gallus domesticus) using glass insulated tungsten microelectrodes. The 66 spontaneously active neurons recorded had widely variable firing rates (mean 4.9 spikes/s, range 0.1-32.4 spikes/s) and variable temporal firing patterns (regular, bursting and random discharge). Interspike interval histograms were constructed for each unit and tested for goodness of fit to theoretical distributions. The activity of 23 units fitted gamma distributions, six units

Effects of dietary anticarcinogens on rat gastrointestinal glutathione S-transferase theta 1-1 levels.

Several naturally occurring food components or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce gastrointestinal cancer rates. Recently we have shown that dietary administration of such compounds enhanced the glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity and class alpha, mu and pi isoenzyme levels in the rat gastrointestinal tract. Elevation of the levels of GSTs, a family of biotransformation enzymes with many functions such as detoxification of carcinogens, might be one of the mechanisms that lead to cancer prevention. We therefore investigated whether the anticarcinogens alpha-an
