Mind-Body Therapy via Videoconferencing in Patients With Neurofibromatosis: Analyses of 1-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a rare genetic disorder associated with substantial deficits in quality of life (QoL). We have previously shown that in this population the Relaxation Response Resiliency Program for NF (3RP-NF) delivered via live videoconferencing is associated with sustained improvement in QoL from baseline through 6-month follow-up over and above an attention placebo control.. PURPOSE: To examine between- and within-group changes in QoL domains from baseline to 1-year follow-up and 6-month to 1-year follow-up. METHODS: We enrolled and randomized 63 adults with NF. Of

Neurofibromatosis-associated malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors in children have a worse prognosis: A nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are rare and aggressive non-rhabdomyoblastic soft-tissue sarcomas (NRSTS) in children. This study set out to investigate clinical presentation, treatment modalities, and factors associated with survival in pediatric MPNST using Dutch nationwide databases. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR) and the Dutch Pathology Database (PALGA) from 1989 to 2017. All primary MPNSTs were collected. Demographic differences were analyzed between adult and pediatric (age ≤18 years) MPNST. In children, demographic an

Breast cancer in neurofibromatosis 1: survival and risk of contralateral breast cancer in a five country cohort study.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition caused by pathogenic variants of the NF1 gene. A markedly increased risk of breast cancer is associated with NF1. We have determined the breast cancer survival and risk of contralateral breast cancer in NF1. METHODS: We included 142 women with NF1 and breast cancer from five cohorts in Europe and 335 women without NF1 screened for other familial breast cancers. Risk of contralateral breast cancer and death were assessed by Kaplan-Meier analysis with delayed entry. RESULTS: One hundred forty-two women with NF1 were diagnose

Early history of the different forms of neurofibromatosis from ancient Egypt to the British Empire and beyond: First descriptions, medical curiosities, misconceptions, landmarks, and the persons behind the syndromes.

The earliest examples of neurofibromatosis (in this case type 1, NF1) can be traced in the Ebers Papyrus (Ancient Egypt, 1.500 B.C.), in a Hellenistic statuette (Smyrna, 323 B.C.), in the coinage of the Parthians kings (247 B.C.) and in some 13th century monks' drawings. These earlier examples are somewhat less well defined as compared to the most recent better defined reports credited as having NF1 including an Inca child mummy (1480-1650 AD), Ulisse Aldrovandi's homuncio ("Monstrorum Historia", 1592 A.D.) with mosaic NF1 or the illustrations seen in the 18th century "Buffon's Histoire Nature

Spontaneous hemothorax in neurofibromatosis treated with percutaneous embolization.

We evaluated the effectiveness of transcatheter arterial coil embolization therapy for the treatment of spontaneous hemothorax followed by aneurysm rupture in neurofibromatosis patients. Three patients were treated for massive hemothorax caused by arterial lesions associated with neurofibromatosis. Bleeding episodes were secondary to ascending cervical artery aneurysm and dissection of vertebral artery in 1 patient, and intercostal artery aneurysm with or without arteriovenous fistula in 2 patients. Patients were treated by transarterial coil embolization combined with chest drainage. In 1 pat

Basal cell carcinoma in childhood after radiation therapy: case report and review.

We describe 2 patients who received ionizing radiation as part of a curative regimen for childhood malignancy which later developed basal cell carcinoma at an early age. They do not occur within the context of well-defined syndromes, such like basal cell nevus syndrome, albinism, or xeroderma pigmentosum. Basal cell carcinomas appears on radiated areas in older individuals, less often in younger patients, in which the period of latency between exposure to radiation and the appearance of basal cell carcinomas is shorter than in older patients. Our 2 cases presented a period of latency of 11 and

[Intraspinal rib penetration in four patients in neurofibromatosis vertebral deformities].

We describe the clinical and radiological features observed in four patients with neurofibromatosis-related scoliosis or kyphoscoliosis who developed rib penetration into the intervertebral foraminae. Rib penetration should be searched for on standard and elective x-rays in patients with moderate curvatures. The diagnosis can be confirmed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of the spine. In case of major deviation, x-rays must be carefully examined, with an accurate search for spinal cord compression to avoid missing the diagnosis. Surgical treatment must consist in ablation o

Involvement of spinal nerves in neurofibromatosis.

Spinal tumors are a frequent form of manifestation of neurofibromatosis. Out of 171 patients, who have been operated on over a ten years period on spinal tumors, 7 patients had neurofibromatosis (4.1%). A total of 9 operations were performed, removing 20 spinal tumors. Three patients had multiple neurofibromas. Half of the neurofibromas had a dumbbell configuration with a larger extraspinal extension. In three patients a family history of neurofibromatosis and typical dermatological signs were evident. Two cases will be selected and the basic concept regarding treatment and the risks involved

Acoustic neuroma in an adolescent without neurofibromatosis: case study.

When acoustic neuromas are found in younger age groups, they are typically bilateral and associated with neurofibromatosis (NF). A unilateral acoustic neuroma in a child or adolescent without NF is rare. We report audiometric, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for a 15-year-old male with an acoustic neuroma but without associated NF. The patient was seen for audiologic assessment on three separate occasions over a period of 5 years. The first two assessments produced unremarkable audiometric and immittance data. The third assessment, subsequent to a fa

Nodular Growths of NF2 -Related Schwannomatosis Vestibular Schwannoma: Clinical and Therapeutical Consequences.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis ( NF2 -SWN) is marked by the growth of bilateral vestibular schwannoma (VS). VS size and tumor growth rate are not correlated with hearing modifications, making a hearing preservation strategy uncertain. The goal of this study was to identify the volumetric growth of VS in NF2 -SWN using a specific 3-dimensional (3D) volumetric analysis artificial intelligence tool and make correlations with hearing pattern. METHODS: A retrospective data set was extracted from a single institution for NF2 -SWN VS and sporadic VS for c

Impact of the coronavirus pandemic on mental health and health care in adults with neurofibromatosis: Patient perspectives from an online survey.

The coronavirus pandemic increased anxiety and stress and prevented access to health care worldwide; it is unclear how COVID-19 affected adults with a multisystem genetic disorder such as neurofibromatosis (NF). An anonymous online survey was distributed through an international registry and foundations to adults with NF (June-August 2020) to assess the impact of the pandemic on mental health and NF health care. Six hundred and thirteen adults (18-81 years; M = 45.7) with NF1 (77.8%), NF2 (14.2%), and schwannomatosis (7.8%) provided complete responses. Respondents rated moderate-to-high amount

Current and Emerging Roles of Whole-Body MRI in Evaluation of Pediatric Cancer Patients.

Imaging is fundamental to diagnosis and management of pediatric patients with cancer and cancer predisposition syndromes (CPSs). Whole-body MRI has emerged as a versatile tool for pediatric oncologic imaging, with the potential to spare children from ionizing radiation imparted by conventional modalities such as CT and PET. Whole-body MRI also enables simultaneous high-resolution local-regional staging and wide field-of-view distant staging in the same imaging session, with superior evaluation of the brain, spine, liver, and marrow. Recent technical advances have reduced imaging times and enha

First report of factors associated with satisfaction in patients with neurofibromatosis.

Patient satisfaction is an integral part of quality health care. We assessed whether health literacy and psychosocial factors are associated with patient satisfaction among adults with neurofibromatosis. Eighty adults (mean age = 44 years; 55% female, 87% white) with NF (50% NF1, 41% NF2, and 9% schwannomatosis) completed an adapted Functional, Communicative, and Critical Health Literacy Questionnaire (FCCHL), the Health Literacy Assessment, a series of Patient Reported Outcome Measures Information System (PROMIS) psychosocial tests, and demographics before the medical visit. After, participan

Comparing the sensitivity of linear and volumetric MRI measurements to detect changes in the size of vestibular schwannomas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 on bevacizumab treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the sensitivity of linear and volumetric measurements on MRI in detecting schwannoma progression in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 on bevacizumab treatment as well as the extent to which this depends on the size of the tumour. METHODS: We compared retrospectively, changes in linear tumour dimensions at a range of thresholds to volumetric tumour measurements performed using Brainlab iPlan(®) software (Feldkirchen, Germany) and classified for tumour progression according to the Response Evaluation in Neurofibromatosis and Schwannomatosis (REiNS) criteria. RESULTS:

Association of tumor location, extent of resection, and neurofibromatosis status with clinical outcomes for 221 spinal nerve sheath tumors.

OBJECT Intradural extramedullary spine tumors represent two-thirds of all primary spine neoplasms. Approximately half of these are peripheral nerve sheath tumors, mainly neurofibromas and schwannomas. Given the rarity of this disease and, thus, the limited analyses of clinical outcomes, the authors examined the association of tumor location, extent of resection, and neurofibromatosis (NF) status with clinical outcomes. METHODS Patients were identified through a search of the University of California, San Francisco, neuropathology database and a separate review of current procedural terminology

Rates of loss of heterozygosity and mitotic recombination in NF2 schwannomas, sporadic vestibular schwannomas and schwannomatosis schwannomas.

Biallelic inactivation of the NF2 gene occurs in the majority of schwannomas. This usually involves a combination of a point mutation or multiexon deletion, in conjunction with either a second point mutation or loss of heterozygosity (LOH). We have performed DNA sequence and dosage analysis of the NF2 gene in a panel of 239 schwannoma tumours: 97 neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related schwannomas, 104 sporadic vestibular schwannomas (VS) and 38 schwannomatosis-related schwannomas. In total, we identified germline NF2 mutations in 86 out of 97 (89%) NF2 patients and a second mutational event in
