Novel ethological endophenotypes in a transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, neurodegenerative disorder with a characteristic triad of cognitive, affective and motor symptoms. Transgenic HD mice show excellent construct and face validity for many of these symptoms, however the decline in some facets of every day activity in humans is difficult to model. One approach is the assessment of species-relevant behaviors. Here we described three ethologically appropriate tests in the mouse-olfactory sensitivity, nest-building and sexually-motivated vocalizations. In R6/1 HD mice, olfactory and nest-building tests were sensiti

Benefits of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis's floral volatile components on human emotions and moods.

With the advancement of society, there has been an increasing focus on the health status of college students, with plants playing a significant role in the campus environment. Investigating the impact of the aromatic scent of plants on the physical and mental well-being of college students is essential. This study centered on the common indoor potted flower Gardenia jasminoides Ellis to delve into its aroma and the influence of its volatiles on the physical, mental, and emotional recovery of college students. The findings revealed that the subjects in both the olfactory group (G1) and the cont

Activation of ATR-Chk1 pathway facilitates EBV-mediated transformation of primary tonsillar B-cells.

OBJECTIVE: Pain relief is a very important aspect in Pediatrician's clinical practice. It is often thought that young children, particularly infants, do not perceive as much pain as adults because of their immature nervous system and that untreated pain would not have adverse long-term consequences. Instead, it has been demonstrated that infants and children experience pain in a similar manner to adults. Many factors, particularly emotional factors, can increase the child's pain perception. Children live with anxiety even minor procedures. This suggests the need for an adequate sedation and th

[Disorders of the sense of smell and taste].

Disorders of olfaction and taste are infrequent, but a complete loss of smell or taste reduces the quality of life significantly. The sensitivity of human olfaction is remarkable, even for specific stimuli: Just a few molecules are enough to induce the correct identification of sterilised and ultraheated milk. Olfaction and taste are called 'chemical senses' because in both cases the adequate stimulus consists of molecules that bind to receptors of the sensory cells. The perceptions of smell and taste are often combined. Taste differentiates only four qualities: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.

COPANOS: use of gabapentin in the management of post-viral parosmia - a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, multi-site trial - study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Parosmia is a qualitative olfactory disorder characterised by a distorted perception of smell, often experienced as unpleasant or offensive. Although parosmia has multiple aetiologies, post-viral parosmia has become increasingly prevalent following the COVID-19 pandemic. In the UK, post-viral parosmia affects an estimated 637 836 individuals and has a substantial negative impact on quality of life and mood. At present, there is no licensed or standardised treatment for this condition. Gabapentin, a gamma-aminobutyric acid analogue with neuromodulatory properties, has shown potent

A Rare Presentation of Quadrigeminal Cistern (Tectal Plate) Lipoma With Visual Hallucinations in a Patient of Schizophrenia: A Case Report.

Intracranial lipomas are rare benign congenital tumours, consisting of <0.1% of all primary brain tumours. They are asymptomatic and are thus incidentally discovered whenever brain imaging is advised due to any other organic cause. These lipomas can rarely present with acute psychosis or schizophrenia-like symptoms characterised by abnormal perceptions, cognition, mood, and behaviour. One of the most frequent symptoms of schizophrenia is hallucination. In patients with schizophrenia, hallucinatory experiences can have an impact on any of the five senses; however, auditory hallucinations are th

Neuroimaging evaluations of olfactory, gustatory, and neurological deficits in patients with long-term sequelae of COVID-19.

The World Health Organization indicated that around 36 million of patients in the European Region showed long COVID associated with olfactory and gustatory deficits. The precise mechanism underlying long COVID clinical manifestations is still debated. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential correlations between odor threshold, odor discrimination, odor identification, and the activation of specific brain areas in patients after COVID-19. Sixty subjects, 27 patients (15 women and 12 men) with long COVID and a mean age of 40.6 ± 13.4 years, were compared to 33 age-matched healthy control

Distorted chemosensory perception and female sex associate with persistent smell and/or taste loss in people with SARS-CoV-2 antibodies: a community based cohort study investigating clinical course and resolution of acute smell and/or taste loss in people with and without SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in London, UK.

BACKGROUND: Loss of smell and/or taste are cardinal symptoms of COVID-19. 'Long-COVID', persistence of symptoms, affects around one fifth of people. However, data regarding the clinical resolution of loss of smell and/or taste are lacking. In this study we assess smell and taste loss resolution at 4-6 week follow-up, aim to identify risk factors for persistent smell loss and describe smell loss as a feature of long-COVID in a community cohort in London with known SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM antibody status. We also compare subjective and objective smell assessments in a subset of participants. METHODS

The Nose Knows… or Does it? Olfactory Reference Syndrome in Patients Presenting for Assessment of Unusual Body Odor.

Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) is a rarely diagnosed psychiatric disorder in which individuals falsely believe that they emit an offensive body odor. This retrospective cohort study characterizes the clinical and demographic features of 54 individuals who presented to a Canadian genetics clinic for query trimethylaminuria (TMAU), an inherited disorder in which a pungent fishy odor is produced. The majority (83%) were found to have a likely diagnosis of ORS and a high rate (73.3%) of concomitant psychiatric disorders; only two patients were diagnosed with TMAU. This study highlights the gen

An experimental model of Braak's pretangle proposal for the origin of Alzheimer's disease: the role of locus coeruleus in early symptom development.

BACKGROUND: The earliest brain pathology related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is hyperphosphorylated soluble tau in the noradrenergic locus coeruleus (LC) neurons. Braak characterizes five pretangle tau stages preceding AD tangles. Pretangles begin in young humans and persist in the LC while spreading from there to other neuromodulatory neurons and, later, to the cortex. While LC pretangles appear in all by age 40, they do not necessarily result in AD prior to death. However, with age and pretangle spread, more individuals progress to AD stages. LC neurons are lost late, at Braak stages III-IV,

Ionotropic receptors signal host recognition in the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis, Copepoda).

A remarkable feature of many parasites is a high degree of host specificity but the mechanisms behind are poorly understood. A major challenge for parasites is to identify and infect a suitable host. Many species show a high degree of host specificity, being able to survive only on one or a few related host species. To facilitate transmission, parasite's behavior and reproduction has been fine tuned to maximize the likelihood of infection of a suitable host. For some species chemical cues that trigger or attract the parasite in question have been identified but how metazoan parasites themselve

Endoscopic sinus surgery improves olfaction in nasal polyposis, a multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: A positive effect of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) as sole treatment on olfactory thresholds and sense of smell in patients with nasal polyposis has been questioned. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that ESS has a positive effect on sense of smell and olfactory threshold in nasal polyposis. METHODS: Uncontrolled post-hoc analysis of a prospective study of 160 patients, > or = 18 years, with bilateral nasal polyps that underwent ESS to treat bilateral nasal polyposis. The effect of ESS was assessed with an olfactory threshold test, a diary score and a smell and tas

Vomeronasal organ lesion disrupts social odor recognition, behaviors and fitness in golden hamsters.

Most studies support the viewpoint that the vomeronasal organ has a profound effect on conspecific odor recognition, scent marking and mating behavior in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). However, the role of the vomeronasal organ in social odor recognition, social interaction and fitness is not well understood. Therefore, we conducted a series of behavioral and physiological tests to examine the referred points in golden hamster. We found that male hamsters with vomeronasal organ lesion showed no preference between a predator odor (the anal gland secretion of the Siberian weasels (Mu

Photobiomodulation in the Treatment of Dysgeusia in Patients with Long COVID: A Single-Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate local and systemic photobiomodulation (PBM) in patients with COVID-19-related dysgeusia, with the expectation of improving taste dysfunction. Background: PBM has garnered attention as a potential therapy in long COVID, a condition characterized by many persistent symptoms following the acute phase of COVID-19. Among these symptoms, dysgeusia, or altered taste perception, can significantly affect patients' quality of life. Emerging research suggests that PBM may hold promise in ameliorating dysgeusia by modulating cellular processes and reducing i

Different patterns of neuronal activities in the infralimbic and prelimbic cortices and behavioral expression in response to two affective odors, 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline and a mixture of cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenal, in the freely moving rat.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is involved in stimulus perception, attentional control, emotional behavior, and the stress response. These functions are thought to be mediated by the infralimbic (IL) and prelimbic (PL) subregions of mPFC; however, few studies have examined the roles of IL and PL cortices in olfactory cognition. In the present study, we investigated the acute effects of two odors, 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) and a mixture of cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenal (green odor: GO), on behavioral responses and IL and PL neuronal activities using extracellular sing
