Atherosclerosis at arterial bifurcations: evidence for the role of haemodynamics and geometry.

Atherosclerotic plaques are found at distinct locations in the arterial system, despite the exposure to systemic risk factors of the entire vascular tree. From the study of arterial bifurcation regions, emerges ample evidence that haemodynamics are involved in the local onset and progression of the atherosclerotic disease. This observed co-localisation of disturbed flow regions and lesion prevalence at geometrically predisposed districts such as arterial bifurcations has led to the formulation of a 'haemodynamic hypothesis', that in this review is grounded to the most current research concerni

A Mathematical Model with Quarantine States for the Dynamics of Ebola Virus Disease in Human Populations.

A deterministic ordinary differential equation model for the dynamics and spread of Ebola Virus Disease is derived and studied. The model contains quarantine and nonquarantine states and can be used to evaluate transmission both in treatment centres and in the community. Possible sources of exposure to infection, including cadavers of Ebola Virus victims, are included in the model derivation and analysis. Our model's results show that there exists a threshold parameter, R 0, with the property that when its value is above unity, an endemic equilibrium exists whose value and size are determined

Electrical control of epilepsy.

Epilepsy afflicts approximately 1-2% of the world's population. The mainstay therapy for treating the chronic recurrent seizures that are emblematic of epilepsy are drugs that manipulate levels of neuronal excitability in the brain. However, approximately one-third of all epilepsy patients get little to no clinical relief from this therapeutic regimen. The use of electrical stimulation in many forms to treat drug-refractory epilepsy has grown markedly over the past few decades, with some devices and protocols being increasingly used as standard clinical treatment. This article seeks to review

Oscillating gradient diffusion MRI reveals unique microstructural information in normal and hypoxia-ischemia injured mouse brains.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether oscillating gradient diffusion MRI (dMRI) can provide information on brain microstructural changes after formaldehyde fixation and after hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury beyond that provided by conventional dMRI. METHODS: Pulsed gradient spin echo (PGSE) and oscillating gradient spin echo (OGSE) dMRI of the adult mouse brain was performed in vivo (50-200 Hz, b = 600 mm(2)/s), and a similar protocol was applied to neonatal mouse brains at 24 h after unilateral hypoxia-ischemia. Animals were perfusion fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde for ex vivo dMRI and histology. R

Voice production model integrating boundary-layer analysis of glottal flow and source-filter coupling.

A voice production model is created in this work by considering essential aerodynamic and acoustic phenomena in human voice production. A precise flow analysis is performed based on a boundary-layer approximation and the viscous-inviscid interaction between the boundary layer and the core flow. This flow analysis can supply information on the separation point of the glottal flow and the thickness of the boundary layer, both of which strongly depend on the glottal configuration and yield an effective prediction of the flow behavior. When the flow analysis is combined with the modified two-mass

Accommodative fluctuations, lens tension, and ciliary body thickness in children.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship among microfluctuations in accommodation, resting tension on the crystalline lens, ciliary body thickness, and refractive error in children. METHODS: Subjects were 49 children, aged 8 to 15 years. Subjects wore habitual correction over their left eye and an infrared filter over the right eye during accommodative measurements. Monocular accommodation was measured continuously for two, 30-second periods using a PowerRef I at a sampling rate of 25 Hz while subjects viewed a high-contrast target at 0.25 m. The high (1.0 to 2.3 Hz) and low- (0 to 0.6 Hz) fr

Glycolytic oscillations in isolated rabbit ventricular myocytes.

Previous studies have shown that glycolysis can oscillate periodically, driven by feedback loops in regulation of key glycolytic enzymes by free ADP and other metabolites. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally in cardiac myocytes that when the capacity of oxidative phosphorylation and the creatine kinase system to buffer the cellular ATP/ADP ratio is suppressed, glycolysis can cause large scale periodic oscillations in cellular ATP levels (0.02-0.067 Hz), monitored from glibenclamide-sensitive changes in action potential duration or intracellular free Mg2+. Action potential durati

The forced oscillation technique in clinical practice: methodology, recommendations and future developments.

The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is a noninvasive method with which to measure respiratory mechanics. FOT employs small-amplitude pressure oscillations superimposed on the normal breathing and therefore has the advantage over conventional lung function techniques that it does not require the performance of respiratory manoeuvres. The present European Respiratory Society Task Force Report describes the basic principle of the technique and gives guidelines for the application and interpretation of FOT as a routine lung function test in the clinical setting, for both adult and paediatric po

Photoreceptor cells of the pike pineal organ as cellular circadian oscillators.

In the pike pineal, the rhythm of melatonin (MEL) secretion is driven by a population of cellular circadian oscillators, synchronized by the 24 h light/dark (LD) cycle. Because the pineal photoreceptor contains both the input and output pathways of the clock, this cell is likely to be a cellular circadian system by itself. To support this idea, we have dissociated and cultured pike pineal cells as well as purified photoreceptors. In culture, the pineal cells reassociated in follicles, surrounded by collagen fibres. At the electron microscopic level, they appeared well preserved. Total cells co

Frequency-specific alterations of the resting-state BOLD signals in nocturnal enuresis: an fMRI Study.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of nocturnal enuresis have focused primarily on regional metrics in the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal ranging from 0.01 to 0.08 Hz. However, it remains unclear how local metrics show in sub-frequency band. 129 children with nocturnal enuresis (NE) and 37 healthy controls were included in this study. The patients were diagnosed by the pediatricians in Shanghai Children's Medical Center affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, according to the criteria from International Children's Continence Society

Magnetic resonance imaging of the vocal fold oscillations with sub-millisecond temporal resolution.

PURPOSE: The temporal resolution of the MRI acquisition is intrinsically limited by the duration of the spatial encoding, which is typically on the order of milliseconds. Faster motion such as the vibration of the vocal folds during phonation cannot be imaged with conventional MRI as this would require sampling frequencies in the kilo-Hertz range. Here, a faster MRI acquisition strategy is presented that encodes a 1D periodic motion at a temporal resolution that is an order of magnitude higher compared to conventional MRI. METHODS: The proposed method encodes the position of an object moving

The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System on Cardiac Rhythm during the Evolution of Diabetes Mellitus Using Heart Rate Variability as a Biomarker.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is highly influenced by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). Several illnesses have been associated with changes in the ANS, thus altering the pattern of HRV. However, the variability of the heart rhythm is originated within the Sinus Atrial Node (SAN) which has its own variability. Still, although both oscillators produce HRV, the influence of the SAN on HRV has not yet been exhaustively studied. On the other hand, the complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), for instance, nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy, increase cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Tr

A convenient method to verify the accuracy of oscillometric blood pressure monitors by the auscultatory method: A smartphone-based app.

It is recommended that oscillometric devices be calibrated by auscultation when first used, but this is difficult in practice. Here, we introduce a smartphone-based technique to verify the accuracy of blood pressure monitors (BPMs). We enrolled 99 consecutive subjects and tested 6 brands of BPMs in this study. During measurements of electronic oscillometric BPMs, Korotkoff sounds were simultaneously collected using a stethoscope head beneath a cuff connected to a smartphone, and an app named Accutension Stetho could then yield an auscultatory BP reading as a reference. Next, differences in BP

The role of the hydrophobic phase in the unique rheological properties of saponin adsorption layers.

Saponins are a diverse class of natural, plant derived surfactants, with peculiar molecular structure consisting of a hydrophobic scaffold and one or several hydrophilic oligosaccharide chains. Saponins have strong surface activity and are used as natural emulsifiers and foaming agents in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, ore processing, and other industries. Many saponins form adsorption layers at the air-water interface with extremely high surface elasticity and viscosity. The molecular origin of the observed unique interfacial visco-elasticity of saponin adsorption layers is of great inter

Relationship between ventilatory oscillations and fractal dimension of the EEG during daytime periodic breathing in heart failure patients.

In this study we investigated the existence and the nature of rhythmic changes in EEG associated with ventilatory oscillations in heart failure (HF) patients with periodic breathing (PB). Since nonlinear mechanisms are thought to be involved in the generation of EEG, we hypothesized that a mathematical approach based on nonlinear methods would provide relevant information on the association between EEG and ventilatory oscillations. We studied five patients who developed a sustained non-obstructive PB pattern during a 20 min laboratory recording. The time course of the fractal dimension of the
