Specific Soft-Tissue Invasion and LMP1 Expression Are Potential Indicators of Extranodal NK/T Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type.

BACKGROUND Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL-NT) is difficult to distinguish from nasal polyps and inverted papilloma, leading to its high misdiagnosis ratio. The aim of this study was to investigate its potential prognostic indicators. MATERIAL AND METHODS Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate overall survival (OS) rate. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to analyze risk ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Nasal ala infiltration and nasal floor thickness >2.0 mm or nasal septum thickness >2.5 mm were potential prognostic factors for OS (p=0.0

NUT Midline Carcinoma: A Series of Five Cases, Including One with Unusual Clinical Course.

NUT midline carcinomas (NMCs) are rare, poorly differentiated tumors with aggressive biological behavior and a characteristic molecular signature. Availability of NUT antibody has facilitated diagnosis of NMC without molecular testing. We report a series of head and neck NMCs diagnosed using NUT IHC at our institute, including one case with an unusual course. Immunohistochemistry for NUT was performed in nasal and sinonasal tumors with diagnoses of undifferentiated carcinoma, poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and malignant neoplasm, not otherwise specified, to identify cases of NMC

A modified midfacial degloving approach for the treatment of unilateral paranasal sinus tumours.

PURPOSE: The midfacial degloving approach (MFDA) is the primary option for the removal of benign and malignant sinonasal tumours. However, the classic MFDA does not compensate for the fact that most benign and malignant paranasal sinus (PNS) tumours are unilateral and the incisions may lead to some unnecessary complications?. Surgical exposure is limited to the upper and deep part of the PNS. Modifications of the classical MFDA that minimize complications and improve surgical field exposure are warranted. PATIENTS: The medical records of 27 consecutive patients who had undergone surgery using

[Endoscopic surgical treatment of patients with isolated sphenoid sinus disease].

INTRODUCTION: Cases of isolated lesions of the sphenoid sinus are rare. For descriptive purposes, clinicians divide them into inflammatory and non-inflammatory with prevalence of the former. Symptoms of the sphenoid sinus disease are difficult to characterise, the most common of them being vague headache and visual disturbances. Thorough preoperative evaluation of the lesion is essential - nasal endoscopy must be performed and computerised tomography or magnetic resonance imaging results analysed. The purpose of the study is to present the assessment of endoscopic surgery outcome in the own gr

Computer-aided image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery in unusual cases of sphenoid disease.

The vital neurovascular structures that border the sphenoid sinus make extensive sphenoid sinus surgery hazardous despite the advent of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Computer-aided image-guided endoscopic sinus surgery (CAIGESS) has facilitated safer surgery by providing real-time analysis of complex, three-dimensional anatomic landmarks. We present 6 cases of atypical sphenoid disease, which greatly benefited from the unique superiority of CAIGESS in avoding surgical complications. Two cases of cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) leak with concomitant meningoencephalocele of the sphenoid sinus were s

DEK::AFF2 Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Sinonasal Region and Temporal Bone Diagnosed After Recurrences: A Report of Two Patients.

DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinoma is a recently recognized entity characterized by a non-viral-related non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with chromosomal rearrangement between DEK on 6p22.3 and AFF2 on Xq28. This neoplasm is associated with an aggressive clinical behavior, particularly regarding local recurrences and distant metastases even with its deceptively bland histomorphology. In this article, we report on 2 patients with DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinomas, which were only diagnosed at the time of recurrence. Patient #1 was originally misdiagnosed with inverted papilloma. This oc

Volumetric study of the maxillary sinus in patients with sinus pathology.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is 1) to obtain the area and volumes of the maxillary sinuses in patients affected by clinically unilateral sinus pathology by comparing the results to the contralateral sinus and 2) to determine the importance of the volumetric measures when diagnosing the percentage of sinus obliteration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-centre observational retrospective clinical study was conducted in 214 patients with clinically unilateral sinus pathologies. Linear (mm), area (mm2) and volume (mm3) measurements were taken from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images o

Seborrheic Keratosis-like Lesions of the Cervix and Vagina: Report of a New Entity Possibly Related to Low-risk Human Papillomavirus Infection.

We report a series of 7 unusual and morphologically distinct cervical or upper vaginal lesions in women aged 41 to 70 years. The lesions involved the cervix in 3 cases, the upper vagina in 2, the cervix and vagina in 1, and in 1 case the site of origin could not be determined. The lesions had a consistent morphologic appearance with a surface "plaque-like" or "stuck-on" configuration apparent in those cases where surrounding normal tissues were present. Broad coalescing solid sheets and interconnecting trabeculae of cytologically bland cells with a rather "basaloid" appearance emanated from th

A Choroid Plexus Epithelial Cell-based Model of the Human Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier to Study Bacterial Infection from the Basolateral Side.

The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus (CP), located in the ventricular system of the brain, form the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). The BCSFB functions in separating the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the blood and restricting the molecular exchange to a minimum extent. An in vitro model of the BCSFB is based on cells derived from a human choroid plexus papilloma (HIBCPP). HIBCPP cells display typical barrier functions including formation of tight junctions (TJs), development of a transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), as well as minor permeabilities for macromolecules.

A rare case of breast cancer metastasising to the nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic spread from non-head and neck tumours to the sinonasal region is exceedingly rare. We present a case of breast cancer metastasis to the nasopharynx, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. To date there have been only two similar cases in the literature. We discuss the diagnosis and management of such cases and propose how they may be staged. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 75-year-old woman with past medical history of breast carcinoma, presented clinically as having a primary sinonasal malignancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a lesion involving the spenoid and ethmoi

The Prelacrimal Recess Approach: A Review of Surgical Applications, Outcomes, and Recent Advances.

The prelacrimal recess approach (PLRA) has advanced endoscopic sinonasal surgery by providing improved access to the maxillary sinus and adjacent anatomical regions while preserving critical structures such as the inferior turbinate (IT) and nasolacrimal duct (NLD). First introduced in 2013, the PLRA has become an important technique for addressing various sinonasal pathologies. This review comprehensively evaluates the advancements, applications, and outcomes associated with the PLRA. The PLRA enables superior visualization and access to regions that are traditionally difficult to reach with

Evaluation of CK8/18 and CK19 Expression as Adjunct Immunohistochemical Markers in Non-Keratinizing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), particularly the non-keratinizing subtype (NK-NPC), is prevalent in Southeast Asia and often presents diagnostic challenges due to overlapping histological features with benign nasopharyngeal lesions. While Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) serology supports diagnosis in many cases, its limitations in sensitivity and specificity necessitate additional tissue-based markers. Objective: To assess the immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratins CK8/18 and CK19 in NPC compared to benign nasal tissue and evaluate their potential as adjunct immunohistochemical ma
