Estimation of left ventricular recovery level based on the motor current waveform analysis on circulatory support with centrifugal blood pump.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of GH-IGF-I axis has been described in many patients affected by β-thalassemia major (TM), especially in children and in adolescents. Recent studies have demonstrated the necessity to evaluate adult patients affected by TM to establish the presence of this alteration which could be relevant in the pathogenesis of cardiac and bone disease, frequently present in this hematological condition. The pathogenesis of this alteration, correlated in the past with iron overload, is not yet completely understood. AIM: The aim of this paper is to evaluate GH-IGF-I axis in a group o

Improved detection of intraventricular cysticercal cysts with the use of three-dimensional constructive interference in steady state MR sequences.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Before the advent of MR imaging, intraventricular cysts were difficult to diagnose noninvasively. Among the invasive procedures used were contrast ventriculography and CT ventriculography. MR imaging, with its multiplanar imaging capabilities, excellent depiction of tissue contrast, and versatile parameters, is an important tool in the assessment of intraventricular cystic lesions. We investigated the role of three-dimensional constructive interference in steady state (3D-CISS) MR sequences in the evaluation of intraventricular cysticercal cysts. METHODS: The study gro

A limited interval of delayed modest hypothermia for ischemic brain resuscitation is not beneficial in neonatal swine.

This investigation determined if a short interval of modest hypothermia (1 h) initiated 30 min after brain ischemia provided neuroprotection. The rationale for the time and duration of brain cooling reflects the likelihood that the implementation of neuroprotective strategies will occur at an interval shortly after ischemia, and that long-term maintenance of normothermia is a cornerstone of neonatal stabilization. Studies were performed in 22 ventilated neonatal mini-swine in a superconducting magnet to obtain 31P magnetic resonance spectra. After a control period all animals underwent 15 min

Comparison of ultrafast half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo sequence with turbo spin-echo sequences for T2-weighted imaging of the female pelvis.

So that we might evaluate the ultrafast half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) sequence in T2-weighted MRI of the female pelvis and compare it with the turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence, we prospectively studied 60 consecutive females with suspected abnormalities of the pelvis. For all MR examinations, we used a 1.5-T superconductive magnet with a phased array coil. The HASTE sequence was applied with TR/effective TE/echo train = infinity/90/64 and a 128 x 256 matrix (acquisition time: .3 sec/slice), conventional TSE imaging with 3,400 to 5,000/132/15 and a 128 x 256 matrix (mean acquis

[Clinical aspects of silent cerebral infarction--MRI findings and its distribution].

High-field MR scans have often showed patchy incidental findings especially in the elderly. We examined 91 patients, without episodes of cerebrovascular disorders previously, who had silent cerebral lesions noted by the 1.5 tesla superconductive system T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging. They were divided into three subtypes by the localization of foci. The 23 subjects (25%) showed confined lesions to thalamus and/or internal capsule and/or basal ganglia (the basal ganglia type). The 39 subjects (43%) had lesions predominantly in cerebral cortex and/or subcortical white matter and/or cereb

0.6 T magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the orbit was performed with a 0.6 T superconducting imaging system in 100 patients with normal orbits who were being evaluated for brain pathology and in 21 additional patients with a variety of orbital lesions to determine the efficacy of MR imaging in displaying orbital abnormalities. Usually, MR studies were performed using a multislice technique with multiple spin-echo pulse sequences and 30, 60, and 90 msec echo times and 500, 1500, and 2000 msec repetition times. Using section thicknesses of about 8 mm, imaging was performed in the transaxial, coronal,

Opportunities for Quantum Sensing in Epilepsy Diagnostics.

Diagnosis in epilepsy depends on several distinct objectives-including interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) detection, source localisation of epileptiform activity, and seizure classification-each shaped by the underlying sensing technology. This review examines the opportunities that quantum magnetic sensing offers within this diagnostic framework, with particular emphasis on translational readiness and clinical potential. Seizure classification is included to situate the broader clinical context of epilepsy diagnostics, whereas the review of quantum sensing evidence is focused on IED dete

Quantitative Evaluation for Magnetoelectric Sensor Systems in Biomagnetic Diagnostics.

Dedicated research is currently being conducted on novel thin film magnetoelectric (ME) sensor concepts for medical applications. These concepts enable a contactless magnetic signal acquisition in the presence of large interference fields such as the magnetic field of the Earth and are operational at room temperature. As more and more different ME sensor concepts are accessible to medical applications, the need for comparative quality metrics significantly arises. For a medical application, both the specification of the sensor itself and the specification of the readout scheme must be consider

MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) at 0.5 T: technique optimisation and preliminary results.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) at 0.5 T. To our knowledge no previous studies of MRCP have been performed at mid-field strength. Thirty-one patients with dilated biliary systems were examined with three-dimensional MRCP. All patients were studied with a 0.5 T superconducting magnet. A three-dimensional turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence was acquired (TR = 5000 ms, TE = 244 ms, echo train length = 45; acquisition time = 14 min 10 s). Coronal images were post-processed with the MIP algorithm. Recently, the parameters have been optimised (TR

[Assessment with magnetic resonance of laryngeal and oropharyngeal movements during phonation].

The latest MR units are provided with the Turbo-Field-Echo technique which permits gradient-echo imaging with very short TE and TR and is optimized to yield the highest possible image quality within a very short acquisition time--i.e., less than 5 seconds. This dynamic study was aimed at depicting normal laryngeal and oropharyngeal movements during maximal inspiration and the prolonged uttering of vowels, in both a normal and a loud voice. We examined 10 healthy volunteers (7 men and 3 women) with an 0.5-T superconductive unit (Gyroscan T5 III, Philips Medical System). We used Turbo-Field-Echo

Chemical Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Heterostructures and Superlattices and Their Applications in Transistor Devices.

ConspectusTwo-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2, WS2, and WSe2, have emerged as compelling candidates for next-generation integrated circuits (ICs) owing to their atomically thin geometry, dangling-bond-free surfaces, and tunable electronic properties. These intrinsic attributes enable them to overcome the fundamental limitations of traditional silicon-based semiconductors, such as short-channel effects in ultrascaled devices. Beyond single-component TMDs, the deliberate assembly of TMD building blocks into heterostructures and superlattices─with spatially
