Qualitative Research of Violent Incidents Toward Young Paramedics in the Czech Republic.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital and emergency medical services (EMS) providers are usually the first to respond to an individual's urgent health needs, sometimes in emotionally charged circumstances. Because violence toward EMS providers in the Czech Republic is often overlooked and under-reported, we do not have a complete understanding of the extent of such violence, nor do we have recommendations from EMS professional organizations on how to resolve this problem in prehospital emergency medicine. METHODS: We conducted this study to explore the process of violence against EMS providers, using the

Portuguese Version of the 12-Item Violence Prevention Climate Scale: Test of Psychometric Properties.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A violence prevention climate is critical for nurses' well-being but also for nursing practice and the quality of care. This study examined the reliability and factor validity of the European Portuguese version of the 12-item Violence Prevention Climate Scale (VPCS). METHODS: Data came from a sample of 120 nurses providing care in Portugal. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the structural theory of the scale. RESULTS: First and second-order confirmatory factor analysis models showed identical goodness-of-fit suggesting the adequacy of the models to the sam

Violent behaviour from young adults and the parents of paediatric patients in the emergency department.

Violence in healthcare is a significant issue and one that is increasing in prevalence globally. Nurses have been identified as the professional group at most risk, with patients the main source of this violence. The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of Australian ED nurses with episodes of patient-related violence from young adults (16-25years of age) and the parents of paediatric patients. Data analysis of semi-structured interviews led to the identification of antecedents to episodes of violence and behaviours specific to these two groups of interest. These behaviours includ

Work hazards and workers' mental health: an investigation based on the fifth European Working Conditions Survey.

BACKGROUND: Workplace hazards are a significant source of health impairment for workers and of financial losses for firms. EU directives on workers' health and safety standards significantly contributed to reduce reported occupational injuries, yet the incidence and prevalence of work-related mental illness is still very high. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between work-related hazards and individuals' perceived mental health. We reviewed the existing evidence on the channels through which task-related factors, adverse agents and psychosocial factors are expected to affect worker

The six-year outcome of alcohol use disorders in men: A population based study from India.

BACKGROUND: Despite the large and growing public health problem of alcohol use disorders (AUD) in India there is a dearth of evidence about the longitudinal outcomes in AUD. The aim of this study is to describe the course and outcomes of AUD in a population based sample of men in India. METHODS: A community cohort of 1899 adult (18-49 years at baseline) men who participated in a cross-sectional survey in Goa, India between 2006 and 08, were re-interviewed face to face 6 years later (2012-14). A range of outcomes including social problems (e.g., workplace problems, domestic violence), morbidit

Active-shooter events in the workplace: Findings and policy implications.

Employees and citizens generally view places of business as inherently safe. Business leaders sometimes make hasty security decisions in hopes of protecting their employees and customers. Leadership should have empirical data to aid in the decision-making process. This paper provides an exhaustive breakdown of active-shooter events in the workplace. The data are disaggregated by business function (eg retail, factory/warehouse, and office space) and include information on the shooter, the event itself, and how the event was resolved. The analyses are followed up by an in-depth discussion of pot

Structural violence in long-term, residential care for older people: comparing Canada and Scandinavia.

Canadian frontline careworkers are six times more likely to experience daily physical violence than their Scandinavian counterparts. This paper draws on a comparative survey of residential careworkers serving older people across three Canadian provinces (Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario) and four countries that follow a Scandinavian model of social care (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) conducted between 2005 and 2006. Ninety percent of Canadian frontline careworkers experienced physical violence from residents or their relatives and 43 percent reported physical violence on a daily basis. Canad

Hostilities faced by people on the frontlines of sexual and reproductive health and rights: a scoping review.

Frontline workers for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) provide life-changing and life-saving services to millions of people every year. From accompanying the pregnant, delivering babies and caring for the newborn to supporting those subjected to sexual violence; from treating debilitating infections to expanding contraceptive choices; from enabling access to safe abortion services to countering homophobia: all over the world frontline SRHR carers and advocates make it possible for so many more to experience dignity in sex, sexuality and reproduction. Yet they are also subjected

A state trauma registry as a tool for occupational injury surveillance.

The goal of occupational surveillance is to identify and determine the magnitude of work-related disease and injury and workplace hazards for the purposes of focusing prevention programs and tracking their effectiveness. There are a number of databases that collect information on pieces of the puzzle of workplace exposure and adverse health outcomes. Other than that for the fatalities, none of these datasets specifically describes the most severe occupational injuries or their attendant disability. The goal of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the Illinois Trauma Registry (ITR) in t

Just Culture and Accountability in Nursing Leadership: Closing the Experience Gap, Rebuilding Morale, and Hardwiring Reliability.

Leadership transitions in nursing have left many first-time nurse leaders underprepared for the most challenging aspects of their role: holding courageous conversations, maintaining accountability, and sustaining civility under stress. These trends were further accelerated by the disruptions of the pandemic. This gap, combined with heightened workplace violence, burnout, and workforce instability, has threatened the culture of safety across health care. Post-COVID-19, restoring trust and resilience requires intentionally integrating Just Culture, the Highly Reliable Experience training, and nu

Mobile apps, AI, and teletherapy: a comprehensive review of digital mental health tools for nurses.

Chronic understaffing, workplace violence, moral distress, rotating shifts, and administrative burdens have created a global mental health crisis for nurses. Around half to two-thirds of nurses report symptoms of burnout, and large surveys have found high levels of depression and anxiety among nursing staff. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, increasing absenteeism, turnover, and error rates. Barriers to care-such as stigma, cost, and limited access in rural areas-mean that many nurses remain untreated. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) offer scalable, flexible, and ofte

Addressing Fear of Negative Consequences of Overdose Response: A Qualitative Study of the Perceptions of Service Industry Workers Who Encounter an Opioid Overdose in an Urban Commercial District in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: The increased contamination of illicit drugs with fentanyl in the United States drug market has contributed to escalating mortality from drug overdose. Leisure and hospitality service industry workers are encountering opioid-triggered overdoses in their workplaces, such as restaurants and bars. Consequently, this increases the need for overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) training, which has been limited. We aimed to describe the experiences among service industry workers encountering an overdose in their workplace. METHODS: We conducted in-depth qualitative intervi

Gone Too Soon: priorities for action to prevent premature mortality associated with mental illness and mental distress.

Globally, too many people die prematurely from suicide and the physical comorbidities associated with mental illness and mental distress. The purpose of this Review is to mobilise the translation of evidence into prioritised actions that reduce this inequity. The mental health research charity, MQ Mental Health Research, convened an international panel that used roadmapping methods and review evidence to identify key factors, mechanisms, and solutions for premature mortality across the social-ecological system. We identified 12 key overarching risk factors and mechanisms, with more commonaliti

Integrated Safety and Health Promotion among Correctional Workers and People Incarcerated: A Scoping Review.

Improving safety and health for correctional workers and people who are incarcerated are widespread yet separate initiatives. Correctional workers and people who are incarcerated experience similar challenges involved with poor workplaces and living conditions, including mental health crises, violence, stress, and chronic health issues, and the available resources lack integration with respect to safety and health promotion. This scoping review sought to contribute to an integrated approach for correctional system safety and health resources and identify studies of correctional resources that

What Happens Next? Traumatic Brain Injury in the Community.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to substantially impact the lives of millions of people around the world annually. Community-based prevention and support of TBI are particularly challenging and underresearched aspects of TBI management. Ongoing cognitive, emotional, and other effects of TBI are not immediately obvious in community settings such as schools, workplaces, sporting clubs, aged care facilities, and support agencies providing homelessness or domestic violence support. This is compounded by a lack of guidance and support materials designed for nonmedical settings. Connectivity

Patient Aggression and the Wellbeing of Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study in Psychiatric and Non-Psychiatric Settings.

Wellbeing of nurses is associated with patient aggression. Little is known about the differences in these associations between nurses working in different specialties. We aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence of patient aggression and the associations between patient aggression and the wellbeing of nurses in psychiatric and non-psychiatric specialties (medical and surgical, and emergency medicine). A sample of 5288 nurses (923 psychiatric nurses, 4070 medical and surgical nurses, 295 emergency nurses) participated in the study. Subjective measures were used to assess both the occurrence
