Case-control study of writer's cramp.

Task-specific focal dystonias are thought to be due to a combination of individual vulnerability and environmental factors. There are no case-control studies of risk factors for writer's cramp. We undertook a case-control study of 104 consecutive patients and matched controls to identify risk factors for the condition. We collected detailed data on medical history and writing history as part of hobbies or occupation. Cases had a college or university degree more frequently than controls [OR = 4.6 (1.3-20.5), P = 0.01]. The risk of writer's cramp increased with the time spent writing each day (

Functional magnetic resonance imaging study of writer's cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp is a type of task specific idiopathic focal dystonia and has an incompletely understood pathophysiology. The present study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate what type of brain activity correlates with writer's cramp and its physiological mechanism. METHODS: Ten patients with writer's cramp were age and gender matched with ten healthy control subjects in a block design. Subjects were scanned by fMRI while performing three consecutive, visually instructive, tasks with MR Vision 2000: (1) suppositional writing, (2) writing with finger

Characteristics of Agraphia in Chinese Patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) manifest progressive decline in writing abilities. Most studies on agraphia in AD have been performed in the alphabetic system, such as English. However, these findings may not be applicable to other written language systems. The unique features of the Chinese written script could affect the patterns of agraphia in Chinese AD patients. The aim of this study was to explore the features of writing errors in Chinese patients with AD and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI), as well as to study the relationship between their writing errors a

The big brown eyes of Samuel Pepys.

Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) is known for writing the finest diary in the English language. He was a man of remarkable accomplishments who transformed the English Navy, was president of the Royal Society, and was a member of the British Parliament. He survived the Great Plague and imprisonment in the Tower of London. During the years when he was writing the diary, Pepys began to experience great pain in his eyes when reading and writing and from photophobia, which caused him to give up writing the diary. Pepys also had an ultimately unjustifiable fear of blindness.

[Paradoxical kinesis phenomenon in focal hand dystonia--writer's cramp].

Paradoxical kinesis (PK) phenomenon and its variants, exerting a beneficial influence on dystonia dynamics, are described using self clinical examination of 57 writer's cramp patients. PK was found in all the patients independently of writer's cramp variant, duration and severity. The most frequent writing maneuvers were as follows: hand printed (100%), proximal arm muscles writing (82.5%), individually selected writing instrument (67.5-80%), unusual means (67.5-75%), writing imitation with unlike-pen object (70%), marked papers (52.5%). The beneficial influence of PK phenomenon on dystonia ex

Evidence of graphomotor dysfunction in children with dyslexia: A combined behavioural and fMRI experiment.

AIM: Children with dyslexia (DYS) have a deficit in spelling (i.e., central processes of writing), and past experiments have suggested that they also frequently experience difficulties in handwriting (i.e., motor peripheral processes of writing) compared with typically developing children (TD). However, the presence of handwriting difficulties in dyslexia is controversial. This experiment aimed to better understand the writing difficulties in DYS children, investigating both the central and peripheral processes of writing and combining cognitive and neuroimaging data. METHOD: Participants wer

Developmental dysgraphia: An overview and framework for research.

Developmental deficits in the acquisition of writing skills (developmental dysgraphias) are common and have significant consequences, yet these deficits have received relatively little attention from researchers. We offer a framework for studying developmental dysgraphias (including both spelling and handwriting deficits), arguing that research should be grounded in theories describing normal cognitive writing mechanisms and the acquisition of these mechanisms. We survey the current state of knowledge concerning developmental dysgraphia, discussing potential proximal and distal causes. One con

No adverse effect of vincristine on handwriting in children after completion of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Long-term writing difficulties in children after treatment with vincristine for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Wilms tumor, B non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and malignant mesenchymal tumors, were investigated. PROCEDURE: Handwriting of 33 survivors and 33 controls matched for age, sex, and grade, was assessed with the BHK-scale. The examiner was blinded for whether a child was a case or a control. RESULTS: No significant difference in writing speed was found. Mean difference in number of letters produced during 5 min was 6.4 (+/-67.1, range -103 to +169). No significant difference was foun

Evaluating the Predictive Impact of an Emergent Literacy Model on Dyslexia in Italian Children: A Four-Year Prospective Cohort Study.

The strong differences in manifestation, prevalence, and incidence in dyslexia across languages invite studies in specific writing systems. In particular, the question of the role played by emergent literacy in opaque and transparent writing systems remains a fraught one. This research project tested, through a 4-year prospective cohort study, an emergent literacy model for the analysis of the characteristics of future dyslexic children and normally reading peers in Italian, a transparent writing system. A cohort of 450 children was followed from the last year of kindergarten to the third grad

[How to detect scientific texts generated with artificial intelligence?].

Large language models have transformed scientific writing, which facilitates text drafting and revision, but at the same time introduces ethical and epistemological risks. Even though their use promotes linguistic equity, the lack of transparency and the manipulation of information threaten academic integrity. AI detectors -such as Originality.ai, ZeroGPT, or Turnitin- show variable effectiveness and do not provide conclusive results, especially against "text humanizers." AI-generated texts are characterized by formal coherence, but also by predictability and stylistic uniformity. Therefore, d

Ideational agraphia: a single case study.

A case study investigates the writing, spelling and praxic skills of one patient who was found to have a selective impairment in his ability to write letters and words in the absence of difficulty in copying these same letters and words. He appeared to have difficulty accessing the correct motor programmes or sequences for writing which we term "ideational agraphia" analagous to the syndrome of ideational apraxia. These findings are related to Margolin's information-processing model of writing.

The influence of right or left handedness on the ability to simulate handwritten signatures and some elements of signatures: a study of Arabic writers.

It has been widely assumed since the 1970s that right-handed writers, on average, do not write or simulate handwriting any better than left-handed writers. This study has dug deeper into that question, to find narrow language environments which left-handed and right-handed writers simulate with different degrees of success or making different types of errors. These might provide useful markers of handedness in writers or forgers. The sample of 823 native Arabic-writing adults, 763 right handed and 60 left handed, first attempted to simulate two Arabic signatures. As expected, the accuracy of t

Creating the first synthetic plastid genome in plants.

Over the last decade, there has been a shift in biotechnology from genome reading (sequencing) to genome writing (engineering). While significant progress has been made in prokaryotes and yeast, genome writing remains in its infancy in plants. Unlike their complex nuclear genomes, the compact and biotechnologically attractive plastid genome represents an ideal target to launch plant genome writing at scale.

Selective Kanji agraphia in crossed aphasia after right-hemisphere infarction: a case report.

Crossed aphasia is a rare form of aphasia in right-handed individuals with right-hemisphere lesions. We report a man aged 67 years who developed crossed aphasia after a right posterior cerebral artery infarction involving the occipital lobe, thalamus, and medial parietal lobe. Neurological and neuropsychological examinations revealed mild anomic aphasia with preserved repetition and comprehension, left homonymous hemianopia, unilateral spatial neglect, prosopagnosia, and no apraxia. Writing showed a marked script-specific dissociation: kana writing was intact, whereas kanji writing was severel

What letters can "learn" from Arabic digits--fMRI-controlled single case therapy study of peripheral agraphia.

Research on (hand-)writing has revealed that Exner's area subserves transferring linguistic impulses into writing programmes. We report on a patient with a lesion affecting Broca's and Exner's area suffering from severe peripheral agraphia for letters but not for Arabic digits. Analogous to semantic (magnitude) information in numbers, we developed a specifically tailored writing training: additional mental imagery based semantic information was attached to letters. The training resulted in significant improvements. Imaging data revealed stronger fronto-parietal network activity including peril

A kinesthetic motor imagery study in patients with writer' cramp.

The aim was to determine if patients with writer' cramp (WC) have abnormalities in kinesthetic motor imagery of hand movements. We timed the execution and simulation of a 'finger tap task' and a 'writing task' in 9 patients with simple WC and 9 matched healthy controls. In the 'finger tap task, patients tended to be slower than controls to execute without vision (p=0.190) and to simulate the movements (p=0.094). In the 'writing task', patients were slower than controls to execute writing with vision (p=0.0001) and without vision of the movements (p=0.0001) and to mentally simulate it (p=0.04).

Case of Pure Agraphia in Kana and Romaji Without Sensorimotor Deficits After a Small Infarct of the Posterior Limb of the Internal Capsule.

OBJECTIVES: Infarctions of the posterior limb of the internal capsule (plIC) typically cause contralateral motor deficits. Cases with pure agraphia, writing impairments alone, are rare. We present a case of agraphia as the sole symptom after a small infarction in the anterior portion of the left plIC, which facilitates understanding of the interplay between the subcortical and cortical networks controlling writing. METHODS: This study evaluated a 62-year-old right-handed Japanese man presenting with difficulties in typing and writing. In addition to neuropsychological assessments, diffusion t

Central and peripheral agraphia in Alzheimer's disease: from the case of Auguste D. to a cognitive neuropsychology approach.

Since the observation of Auguste D. by Alöis Alzheimer, it is an acknowledged fact that writing is one of the cognitive functions that are weakened early in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to examine the cognitive nature of this disorder and question the hypothesis of a standard progression (Platel et al., 1993) from lexical to other central and more peripheral processes. A large group of mild to moderate AD patients (n=59) and a group of healthy elderly controls were submitted to an extensive assessment of both the central and peripheral components of writing. A comparison of group

Cognitive Decline on the Bench: A Text Analysis of the Opinions of Justice Stephen Field.

This paper uses text analysis to understand how cognitive decline affected the opinion writing of Justice Stephen Field over the course of his career. Justice Field is used as a case study because of his lengthy tenure, the fact he did not have law clerks to write opinions for him, and because it is widely known he was senile for the last part of his career. The results show that the onset of his senility altered lexical and syntactic elements of his writing style. His opinion language became simpler, yet also harder to read. The emotive language of his opinions also became more neutral toward
