Human intestinal anisakiosis due to consumption of raw salmon.

Anisakiosis is a parasitic infection that follows consumption of raw or insufficiently pickled, salted, smoked, or cooked wild marine fish infected with Anisakis sp. larvae. We report a case of intestinal anisakiosis in a 50-year-old man from Quebec who presented with abdominal pain and peripheral eosinophilia after eating raw wild-caught salmon from the Pacific Ocean off Canada. Abdominal CT scan showed bowel distension proximal to a segmental jejunal wall thickening, which was resected. The jejunum segment showed a localized area of serositis with mucosal edema and a submucosal abscess rich

[Gunshot and stab injuries of the abdomen].

From 1973 to 1991 a total of 422 patients underwent surgery because of an abdominal trauma. 12 patients had gunshot wounds and 46 patients stab wounds. In a retrospective study the diagnostic and therapeutic procedure and the indication for surgery are analysed. After gunshot wounds of the abdomen we always performed a laparotomy. In 11 od 12 cases we found serious intra-abdominal injuries. Only in one case the laparotomy was "unnecessary", because of a tangential wound without penetrating of the abdominal wall. After stab wounds the diagnostic and therapeutic management was more selective. In…

Acute toxic effects in mice of an extract from the marine algae Gonyaulax monilata.

Unialgal cultures of Gonyaulax monilata were cultured and harvested. A modified Westphall procedure was used to prepare an extract which did not contain saxitoxin, the gonyautoxins and structurally related toxins. The extract was administered i.p. to young adult, male CD-1 mice and produced: sedation, abdominal constriction, fecal clumping in the perianal area, ataxia, tremors, cyanosis, loss of reflexes, convulsions and death (LD50 = 2.28 mg/kg). Gross and microscopic pathology in the treated mice included: acute active hyperemia of the viscera, multifocal areas of necrosis of the musculature

Mondor's disease as the initial presentation of breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Mondor's disease is a rare form of superficial thrombophlebitis most commonly affecting the superficial veins of the anterior chest wall and breast. In most cases, it is a benign and self-limiting condition; however, it may occasionally be associated with breast malignancy. The aim of this paper is to present a case report of a patient in whom Mondor's disease was the first clinical manifestation of breast cancer. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old female patient presented with a painful subcutaneous streak on the left breast extending caudally to the anterior abdominal wall. Clinical e…

Hemodynamic Differences Associated with Extreme Versus Minimal Proximal Neck Angulation in Ruptured Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A Patient-Specific Computational Study.

BACKGROUND: Maximum aneurysm diameter remains the principal criterion for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risk assessment, but additional morphologic and biomechanical factors may help explain the heterogeneity of rupture-related vulnerability. This exploratory study aimed to characterize hemodynamic differences associated with extreme versus minimal proximal neck angulation in ruptured infrarenal AAAs. METHODS: Preoperative computed tomography angiography datasets from six patients with ruptured infrarenal AAAs were retrospectively analyzed. Cases were categorized into an extreme angulation

Case Report: A "visceral vasculitis storm" in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: simultaneous enteritis, ureteritis, and splenic infarction in a pediatric patient.

BACKGROUND: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-system autoimmune disease. Although lupus enteritis is a recognized manifestation of mesenteric vasculitis, lupus ureteritis is rare. The simultaneous occurrence of both, termed a "visceral vasculitis storm," poses a significant diagnostic challenge. Clinicians often struggle to differentiate primary ureteritis from secondary mechanical compression caused by intestinal edema (the "monistic" view). CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl with a history of transient ptosis and positive ANA/dsDNA results 4 months prior to the current presen

Calprotectin as a new inflammatory marker of abdominal aortic aneurysm: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a relevant clinical problem due to the risk of rupture of progressively dilated infrarenal aorta. It is characterized by degradation of elastic fibers, extracellular matrix, and inflammation of the arterial wall. Though neutrophil infiltration is a known feature of AAA, markers of neutrophil activation are scarcely analyzed; hence, the main objective of this study. METHODS: Plasma levels of main neutrophil activation markers were quantified in patients with AAA and a double control group (CTL) formed by healthy volunteers (HV) and patients with

Ultrasonographic features of intestinal lipogranulomatous lymphangitis in 10 dogs.

Intestinal lipogranulomatous lymphangitis (ILL) is a granulomatous inflammation of the lymphatic vessels of the intestinal wall and mesentery characterized by lipogranulomas. The purpose of this retrospective, multi-center, case series study is to report the ultrasonographic features of canine ILL. Ten dogs with a histologically confirmed ILL undergoing preoperative abdominal ultrasound were retrospectively included. Additional CT was available in two cases. Lesion distribution was focal in eight dogs and multifocal in two. All dogs presented with intestinal wall thickening and two had a conco

Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia caused by type B aortic dissection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is defined as acute intestinal ischemia because of decreased blood flow in mesenteric vessels. Only a few cases of NOMI that occur secondary to aortic dissection (AD) have been reported, resulting in the lack of sufficient knowledge of diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We aimed to report a case of NOMI caused by type B Aortic Dissection. A 26-year-old male patient was transferred to our hospital with the diagnose of NOMI and aortic dissection in April 2018. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) assists the diagnosis of paralytic i

Pneumatosis Intestinalis of the Colon and Greater Omentum following Small Bowel Resection.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is a condition of gas collection within the bowel wall that can represent either a benign clinical finding or a forerunner to potential gastrointestinal catastrophe. As a potentially sinister discovery typically first detected on radiographic imaging, clinicians need to astutely assess the need for additional urgent medical or surgical management in these patients. Apart from portal venous gas, PI outside of the bowel wall is an extremely rare entity that is poorly described. Hence, it is not necessarily clear if PI outside the bowel wall warrants mo

Dual-energy CT of acute bowel ischemia.

Acute bowel ischemia is a condition with high mortality and requires rapid intervention to avoid catastrophic outcomes. Swift and accurate imaging diagnosis is essential because clinical findings are commonly nonspecific. Conventional contrast enhanced CT of the abdomen has been the imaging modality of choice to evaluate suspected acute bowel ischemia. However, subtlety of image findings and lack of non-contrast or arterial phase images can make correct diagnosis challenging. Dual-energy CT provides valuable information toward assessing bowel ischemia. Dual-energy CT exploits the differential

Two C-C Family Chemokines, Eotaxin and RANTES, Are Novel Independent Plasma Biomarkers for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation of the aortic wall is recognised as a key pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This study was undertaken to determine whether inflammatory cytokines could be used as biomarkers for the presence of AAA. METHODS AND RESULTS: Tissue profiles of 27 inflammatory cytokine were examined in AAA (n=14) and nonaneurysmal (n=14) aortic tissues. Three cytokines, regulated upon activation normally T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES), eotaxin, and macrophage inflammatory protein 1 beta (MIP-1b), had increased expression in AAA, particularly within the adventitial lay

Peritoneal Submesothelial Stromal Cells Support Hematopoiesis and Differentiate into Osteogenic and Adipogenic Cell Lineages.

The peritoneum is a thin membrane that covers most of the abdominal organs, composed of a monolayer of mesothelial cells and subjacent submesothelial loose connective tissue. Cells from the peritoneal wall are correlated with peritoneal fibrosis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. However, the distinct involvement of mesothelial or submesothelial cells in such phenomena is still not clear. Here, we propose a new strategy to obtain stromal cells from anterior peritoneal wall explant cultures. These cells migrated from peritoneal tissues and proliferated in vitro for 4 weeks as adherent fi

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis: 10 years experience.

Eight patients (five men, three women), mean age 36.9 +/- 13.5 (17-60) yr, were diagnosed to have eosinophilic gastroenteritis. The condition was proved in five patients by biopsies through endoscope, and in three, by operation. All had hypereosinophilia (absolute eosinophil count of 1,337-21,787/cm3). According to Klein classification, two had mucosal disease, three had muscle layer disease, and three, subserosal disease. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain (100%), diarrhea (62.5%), vomiting (62.5%), and nausea (50%). Four patients (50%) had symptoms for more than 1 yr before diagnos
