'You have to be almost dead before they ever really work on you in prison': A qualitative study of formerly incarcerated women's health care experiences during incarceration in Louisiana, U.S.

Globally, the rate of incarceration among women is rising, and in the U.S., women's incarceration has grown at twice the rate for men over the last four decades. Louisiana has the second highest rate of incarceration in the U.S. There is evidence that men in Louisiana prisons do not receive adequate healthcare, but little is known about their women counterparts. We aimed to document formerly incarcerated women's experiences with receiving healthcare during incarceration in Louisiana to inform policy and practice change. In partnership with two community-based organisations in New Orleans, Loui

Oral and dental health and health care for Māori with type 2 diabetes: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and periodontal disease are two highly prevalent, directly and independently associated long-term conditions that disproportionately impact Indigenous Māori in New Zealand (NZ). Although poorly understood, a number of social and biological mechanisms connect these conditions. This qualitative study explored experiences of T2DM and oral and dental (hereafter oral/dental) health; access to oral/dental health care; whether participants' experiences supported or challenged existing evidence; and sought suggestions for improving oral/dental health in a hi

Expanding access to BRCA1/2 genetic counseling with telephone delivery: a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: The growing demand for cancer genetic services underscores the need to consider approaches that enhance access and efficiency of genetic counseling. Telephone delivery of cancer genetic services may improve access to these services for individuals experiencing geographic (rural areas) and structural (travel time, transportation, childcare) barriers to access. METHODS: This cluster-randomized clinical trial used population-based sampling of women at risk for BRCA1/2 mutations to compare telephone and in-person counseling for: 1) equivalency of testing uptake and 2) noninferiority o

Risk behaviors and STI prevalence among people with HIV in El Salvador.

To date, there are no studies from El Salvador among people with HIV to inform prevention programs. We conducted a study in El Salvador in 2008 among people with HIV using audio computer-assisted interviews on risk behaviors and access to health care. Blood was tested for syphilis and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). Active syphilis was defined as RPR titer ≥1:8. Genital specimens were tested for other sexually transmitted infections (STI) by PCR. We evaluated factors associated with unprotected sex with last stable partner of HIV-negative or unknown status among those reporting a stable partner

Regulatory Readiness for Paper Replacement in Global Pharmaceutical Electronic Labeling: Cross-Sectional Comparative Policy Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and up-to-date medicinal product information is essential for the safe and effective use of medicines. Electronic labeling (e-labeling) has emerged as a potential alternative to paper-based package inserts by enabling timely updates, improving accessibility, and supporting integration with digital health systems. However, regulatory approaches to pharmaceutical e-labeling remain fragmented across jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: This study examined how e-labeling policies have developed across International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) member jurisdictio

Evaluating the quality and reliability of youtube videos on tympanostomy tubes: a comprehensive analysis for patients and parents.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of online platforms as sources of medical information has led to a growing concern regarding the accuracy, reliability, and quality of the content available. YouTube, one of the most widely accessed platforms, serves as a prominent source for health-related information, including topics like tympanostomy tubes. However, the variability in the quality of uploaded videos and the lack of standardization raise questions about their utility for patient education and decision-making. This study aims to evaluate the quality and reliability of the information provided by

Resource allocation for environmental health services in healthcare facilities: A qualitative case study from Niger.

Water, sanitation, hygiene, waste management, and other environmental health services are critical for safe health systems, but global access is lacking. Adequate financing is a key barrier, and understanding resource allocation can help identify solutions in resource-limited contexts. We conducted a qualitative case examining resource allocation in rural Niger. Our objectives were to understand resource allocation processes, key actors and their roles, and contextual factors that influenced resource allocation. We interviewed thirty-three healthcare workers, community leaders, and government

Discussing health while seeking community: A descriptive study of celiac disease on TikTok.

Background: For individuals suffering from chronic disease, more than being an information source for health information, social media serves as a dynamic forum for shared goals, emotional and practical support through the sharing of lived experiences. Aim: This study envisaged a content analysis of the 100 most widely-viewed English language videos related to celiac disease posted on TikTok. Methods: TikTok was searched using the hashtag #celiacdisease. This search term was chosen as it represented the broadest summation of the desired topic with the most views (80 million) of any related has

Health care informational challenges for women diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lack knowledge about their disease, which limits their ability to take responsibility for self-care and creates negative psychosocial effects, including marital problems. Normally, screening is performed in primary care, and in case of abnormal results, the patient is referred to specialized care for follow-up and treatment. Given the lack of international literature regarding patients' experiences in primary and specialized healthcare, our study aims to: (a) investigate how women with CIN perceive the communicati

Barriers and Facilitators to Accessing Preventive Services for Chronic Diseases Among People From Bangladeshi and Nepalese Backgrounds Living in Sydney.

BACKGROUND: People from Bangladeshi and Nepalese origin living in Australia experience a disproportionate burden of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Although preventive services are essential to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, existing evidence indicates that these communities encounter unique migration, socioeconomic and health system-level challenges that impede their access to existing preventive services in Australia. The present study therefore explored the barriers and facilitators to accessing preventive care services among people of Bangladeshi and

A socio-ecological model of the management of leprosy reactions in Indonesia and India using the experiences of affected individuals, family members and healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy reactions (LR) are immune-mediated complications of leprosy that may be associated with severe and irreversible nerve damage. Non-medical aspects, such as financing, service provision, and healthcare resources in the management of LR are generally overlooked as studies tend to concentrate on clinical features and treatment. Barriers to accessing care and services are a major cause of suboptimal care for people with leprosy. This study aims to explore the barriers to and facilitators of high-quality care and management of LR in two leprosy-endemic countries with different he

Managing the personal side of health: how patient expertise differs from the expertise of clinicians.

BACKGROUND: When patients need health information to manage their personal health, they turn to both health professionals and other patients. Yet, we know little about how the information exchanged among patients (ie, patient expertise) contrasts with the information offered by health professionals (ie, clinician expertise). Understanding how patients' experiential expertise contrasts with the medical expertise of health professionals is necessary to inform the design of peer-support tools that meet patients' needs, particularly with the growing prevalence of largely unguided advice sharing th

Long-range two-dimensional exciton sensitization of triplet-pair emission.

The spin-entangled triplet-pair state produced by singlet fission is promising for quantum information applications, but its optical darkness severely limits spectroscopic access and optical readout. Here we show that monolayer WS2 can act as a long-range excitonic sensitizer for triplet-pair emission in the singlet-fission molecule 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-tetramethyl pentacene (TCPS). Strong excitonic resonances and spin-orbit-split valleys in WS2 mediate long-range excitonic energy transfer into the triplet-pair manifold, enhancing triplet-pair emission by more than two orders of

A survey of anonymous oocyte donors: demographics.

This is a questionnaire based study of 501 women enquiring about anonymous oocyte donation at a private in-vitro fertilization (IVF) unit, investigating the demographic characteristics and logistic issues involved in ovum donation. The 501 women were made up of 356 women who did not donate ('non-donors') and 145 women who eventually donated their oocytes ('donors'). Although there was a majority of housewives among the enquirers, women in full-time employment were the majority of actual donors. Logistic factors such as the travel and time commitment involved were major reasons for non-donation

Do mental health service users reliably report their clinical diagnoses and health histories in epidemiological surveys?

AIMS: Self-report checklists are commonly used to collect health information in social and epidemiological studies. Little is known about the reliability of such self-report data. This study examined the 6-month test-retest reliability of 28 clinical diagnoses and health histories as self-reported by a sample of adult female mental health service users. METHODS: A convenience sample of female mental health service users (N = 293) provided self-report data on their health histories - including physical, psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and functional domains - two times, approximately 6 months

Functional patient stratification for sensory- and swallowing-related acceptability of oral dosage forms: an evidence-informed conceptual framework.

Oral dosage forms are widely used, but unpleasant sensory experiences, oral residue, swallowing difficulty, and dysgeusia can reduce acceptability, dose completion, and adherence. This narrative and conceptual review examines patient heterogeneity in sensory- and swallowing-related acceptability and proposes a functional patient-stratification framework for oral formulation design. The framework organizes formulation-relevant barriers into three axes: baseline bitterness sensitivity, oral and swallowing burden, and taste mismatch with dysgeusic distortion. The framework is intended to translat
