Burden of injuries and its associated hospitalization expenditure in India.

Injuries are a major public health concern, affect the most productive age group i.e. (15-60 years) and increases disability adjusted life years (DALYs) and results in a huge financial burden on the household. Disease burden is represented by DALYs and economic burden represents the out of pocket (OOP) and catastrophic health expenditure (CHE). We examined the burden of injury and its impact on household financial burden among the working population (15-60 years) in India. We used data on National and State Level DALYs for Injuries for 2017 from the published National Disease Burden Estimate (

Simultaneous bilateral reverse shoulder arthroplasty for bilateral four-part fracture of the proximal humerus in an elderly patient: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral fracture is the third most common fracture in elderly people after fractures of proximal femur and distal radius. They typically occur after low-energy trauma in women affected by osteoporosis, bilateral involvement is rare and usually with a simple pattern of fracture. Bilateral four-part proximal humerus fractures are even less frequent, with only a few reports published previously, with all of them caused by a seizure or electrocution in patients < 65 years old. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 77-year-old right-handed female that sustained a bilateral simultane

Childhood acute basilar artery thrombosis successfully treated with mechanical thrombectomy using stent retrievers: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Acute basilar artery occlusion (ABAO) is an infrequent but potentially fatal cause of strokes in both adults and children, and it is usually due to vertebral artery dissection (VAD). VAD has been found to be usually a consequence of traumatic vertebral artery injury. ABAO usually presents with symptoms of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) of the posterior circulation or transient ischemic attack (TIA). It may lead to death or long-term disability if not promptly recanalized. Basilar artery recanalization in children can be achieved safely and with excellent clinical outcome using endov

Fractures in the prodromal period of Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between fractures and Parkinson disease (PD) during the 5-year prodromal phase as compared to controls. METHODS: We performed a population-based case-control study of Medicare beneficiaries in the United States from 2004 to 2009. We identified 89,632 incident PD cases and 117,760 comparable controls 66-90 years of age in 2009. PD case status was the outcome, and noncranial fracture the independent variable. We used logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for association between fracture and PD in yearly

Risk Factors for Transverse Ligament Disruption and Vertebral Artery Injury Following an Atlas Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Atlas fracture occurs in 3%-13% of all cervical spinal injuries and is often associated with other injuries. The factors associated with concomitant transverse ligament disruption and vertebral artery injury remain underexamined. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 97 consecutive cases of atlas fractures. We analyzed demographic and clinic characteristics, including mechanism of injury, fracture type, and associated injuries. We identified factors independently associated with vertebral artery injury and/or transverse ligament disruption. RESULTS: On multivariable analysis, vert

Hearing impairment increases the risk of distal radius, hip, and spine fractures: A longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing impairment has been suggested to increase the risk of falls. However, most previous studies were conducted in an older population without classification of the fracture regions. This study aimed to delineate the risk of each fracture type in all age populations. METHODS: The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort was collected from 2002 to 2013. A total of 4,854 severe hearing-impaired and 1,354 profound hearing-impaired participants were matched for age, group, sex, income group, and region of residence with 19,416 and 5,416 control participants, r

[Recurring post-traumatic growing skull fracture].

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fracture, also known as post-traumatic bone absorption or leptomeningeal cyst, is a rare complication of traumatic brain injuries and occurs almost exclusively in children under 3 years of age. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 6-month-old child who presented, two months after an apparently unimportant traumatic skull injury, persistence of left temporoparietooccipital cephalohaematoma with no other signs. A transfontanellar ultrasonography scan revealed a bone defect with brain herniation, and computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging also confirme
