At the outset of the research programme into irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) it was perceived that there was a need to develop a symptom-based classification for the patients. Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) are structurally and functionally similar to matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). We have previously demonstrated that a SVMP, named gaminelysin, can induce endothelial cell apoptosis [Biochem J. 357 (2001) 719]. BACKGROUND: Infections by the human papillomavirus occur in the skin and in the mucosa. They may play a significant role in the neoplastic transformation of cells. At least half of all the epithelial tumours of the ocular surface and the lacrimal drainage system have been shown to be HPV associated. However, in ca. 50% of these tumors only a limited number of mucosal HPV types could be detected by commercially available test systems. Seventeen cases of superficial angiomyxoma (cutaneous myxoma) of the genital region are reported. Eighteen cases of massive ovarian oedema are presented. The age of patients averaged 26 years and 16 presented with an acute abdomen. Hormonal symptoms included virilism in three cases and one with precocious pseudopuberty. Ultrasonographic findings were variable and not diagnostically accurate. We describe five cases in which the cells of lobular carcinoma in situ seemed to form round, regular lumens similar to the cribriform spaces of ductal carcinoma in situ. After careful inspection, we concluded that the spaces indicate the presence of collagenous spherulosis and that this unusual pattern arises through the confluence of lobular neoplasia and spherulosis.
