Association of childhood maltreatment with DXA‑derived body composition in middle‑aged and older adults: mediating roles of unhealthy lifestyle and depression.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) may shape health outcomes later in life, yet its association with body composition in mid-to-late adulthood remains incompletely characterized, particularly regarding sex differences and mechanistic pathways. METHODS: We analyzed UK Biobank participants who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans and grip strength assessment at imaging visits (2014 onward) and retrospectively reported CM in 2016. CM domains included physical and emotional neglect, as well as sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, assessed using the Childhood Trauma Screene

A systematic review indicates an association between birth weight and body fat in childhood.

AIM: To summarise the existing evidence regarding the body fat of small or large for gestation subjects, evaluated from birth up to 18 years of age. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines were adopted for the current systematic review, including studies having evaluated body fat with bioelectrical impedance analysis, air displacement plethysmography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: A total of 31 studies was included. The balance of evidence suggests that small for gestation infants have decreased fat mass at birth; postnatally they experience increased adipos

Vitamin D deficiency serves as a precursor to stunted growth and central adiposity in zebrafish.

Emerging evidence demonstrates the importance of sufficient vitamin D (1α, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) levels during early life stage development with deficiencies associated with long-term effects into adulthood. While vitamin D has traditionally been associated with mineral ion homeostasis, accumulating evidence suggests non-calcemic roles for vitamin D including metabolic homeostasis. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency (VDD) during early life stage development precedes metabolic disruption. Three dietary cohorts of zebrafish were placed on engineered diets inclu

Childhood Obesity and Cancer Risk in Adulthood.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize our current understanding of the association between childhood obesity and cancer risk later in life. RECENT FINDINGS: Adipose tissue secrets a variety of adipocytokines, and expression and/or secretion rate of most of them seems to be increased or dysregulated in obesity. In addition, obesity leads to increased secretion of proinflammatory cytokines such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), which promotes an infiltration of inflammatory immune cells into adipose tissue. This process m

Association of bilateral oophorectomy and body fatness in a representative sample of US women.

OBJECTIVE: Preclinical studies suggest that abrupt hormone deprivation caused by oophorectomy, leads to obesity and its metabolic sequelae. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between oophorectomy and body fatness in a nationally representative sample of women. METHODS: The association between prior oophorectomy and nine adiposity measures was examined using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III, 1988-1994). The analytic population included cancer-free women age 40 or older (N=3549) who underwent standardized body measurem

Comparison of 7-site skinfold measurement and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for estimating body fat percentage and regional adiposity in Taiwanese diabetic patients.

Obesity and regional adiposity are important risk factors for cardiometabolic disorders. The aim of this study is to compare 7-site skinfold (SF) measurement to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference method for estimating body fat percentage (BF%) and regional adiposity in diabetic outpatients. A total of 59 diabetic patients (36 females and 23 males) aged 28.5-78 years (median 67.7 years) with BMI 18.8-40.6 kg/m2 (median: 25.5 kg/m2) were enrolled. 7-site skinfold measurement and DXA were performed at the same visit day and biochemistry data were collected. Our results demons

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity: biochemical, metabolic and clinical presentations.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world. Presentation of the disease ranges from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NAFLD is a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome that includes central abdominal obesity along with other components. Up to 80% of patients with NAFLD are obese, defined as a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m(2). However, the distribution of fat tissue plays a greater role in insulin resistance than the BMI. The large amount of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in morbidly obese (BMI > 40 kg/m(2)) individuals

Neonatal overfeeding induced by small litter rearing causes altered glucocorticoid metabolism in rats.

Elevated glucocorticoid (GC) activity may be involved in the development of the metabolic syndrome. Tissue GC exposure is determined by the tissue-specific GC-activating enzyme 11β-hydroxysteriod dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) and the GC-inactivating enzyme 5α-reductase type 1 (5αR1), as well as 5β-reductase (5βR). Our aim was to study the effects of neonatal overfeeding induced by small litter rearing on the expression of GC-regulating enzymes in adipose tissue and/or liver and on obesity-related metabolic disturbances during development. Male Sprague-Dawley rat pup litters were adjusted to

Aromatase expression in osteoarthritic and osteoporotic bone.

OBJECTIVE: Estrogen deprivation is a central mechanism in the development of osteoporosis with aging. Results from recent studies also suggest the involvement of estrogens in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA). Aromatization of androgenic precursors in peripheral tissue is the main source of estrogens in postmenopausal women and in men. However, the importance of aromatase expression in bone is a subject of controversy. This study was undertaken to determine aromatase expression in bone samples from patients with hip fracture and patients with OA. METHODS: We studied 104 patients with

Posttranscriptional Regulation of Insulin Resistance: Implications for Metabolic Diseases.

Insulin resistance defines an impairment in the biologic response to insulin action in target tissues, primarily the liver, muscle, adipose tissue, and brain. Insulin resistance affects physiology in many ways, causing hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, visceral adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, elevated inflammatory markers, and endothelial dysfunction, and its persistence leads to the development metabolic disease, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as well as neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Mesenteric panniculitis presenting as liver dysfunction.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a non-specific inflammatory disorder affecting adipose tissues of the mesentery. Mesenteric adipose tissues contain macrophages and other inflammatory cells, which may secrete tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)-1, and IL-6. These cytokines collect into the portal vein and thereby flow into the liver, possibly influencing hepatic function. Mesenteric panniculitis often occurs with inflammatory reactions such as fever and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rates. Systemic inflammatory disorders can evoke acute cholestatic liver involvement, which is mediated by

The unified hypothesis of interactions among the bone, adipose and vascular systems: 'osteo-lipo-vascular interactions'.

Epidemiological evidence has established a link among hyperlipidemia, visceral obesity, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We here propose the hypothesis that the associations of those disorders are based on interaction of the three organs, i.e. the bone, adipose, and vascular tissues, possibly through multiple interactions among several humoral factors and/or transcription factors. The unified hypothesis of three organs, which we call 'osteo-lipo-vascular interactions', may be explained by the common origin of the cells in each organ. The mesenchymal stem cells are capable of di

Impaired epidermal growth factor production in genetically obese ob/ob mice.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent inhibitor of adipose differentiation in vitro and delays adipose tissue development in vivo. Here we show that in the homozygous male obese mice the level of EGF in the submaxillary gland and plasma is significantly lower than in the glands and plasma of age-matched control littermates. This EGF deficiency in ob/ob mice was observed as early as 5 wk of age when obesity had just become apparent and was also found in adult mice. The level of prepro-EGF mRNA expression in the submaxillary gland was also lower in obese mice than in control littermates. How

Histological analysis of parotid and submandibular glands in chronic alcohol abuse: a necropsy study.

A quantitative histological analysis of the major salivary glands was carried out at necropsy in 28 alcoholics and in a series of age and sex matched controls. The findings were related to the different types of histologically diagnosed liver disease present. Significant quantitative changes of salivary gland structure were noted in cirrhosis but not in other forms of alcoholic liver disease. In cirrhotic subjects the parotid contained proportionally more adipose but less acinar tissues than in controls. The submandibular gland showed a proportional increase in adiposity and reduction in fibro

The association between regional adiposity, cognitive function, and dementia-related brain changes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity has been previously associated with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD). Body mass index (BMI) is the most common measure of global adiposity, but inconsistent results were found since it is a global measurement. BMI does not represent regional fat distribution which differs between sexes, race, and age. Regional fat distribution may contribute differently to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related brain changes. Fat-specific targeted therapies could lead to personalized improvement of cognition. The goal of this system

Body Composition in Heart Failure: A Phenotype-Informed Framework for Assessment and Management.

Body mass index (BMI) and waist-based anthropometric indices are widely used to estimate adiposity and cardiometabolic risk. Yet in established heart failure (HF), modestly higher BMI is associated with improved survival, while waist-based measures show a linear association with worse outcomes. This apparent discrepancy suggests that the biological interpretation of BMI and body composition changes once HF develops. In HF, BMI reflects the composite of adipose tissue, fluid accumulation, and skeletal muscle wasting, whereas waist-based indices primarily reflect central adiposity. In this narra

Effect of home-based exercise with or without a Mediterranean-style diet on adiposity markers in postmenopausal women: A randomized-control trial.

Advancing age and estrogen deficiency increases susceptibility of post-menopausal women (PMW) to abdominal obesity and manifestation of cardiometabolic disease. There is limited evidence on the effect of lifestyle interventions on adiposity markers within at-risk PMW. Therefore, this study aims to evaluates an 8-weeks of home-based, equipment-free, interval training (HEFIT) with or without Mediterranean-style diet (MD) on adiposity markers in physically inactive, postmenopausal women with overweight/obesity.
