HIV/AIDS protective factors among urban American Indian youths.

This research examined how family and individual factors influence 3 HIV/AIDS risk behaviors: having more than 1 sexual partner in the last 3 months, substance use at last sexual intercourse, and condom non-use at last sexual intercourse. The sample includes 89 sexually active American Indian adolescents living in a large Southwestern U.S. city. Logistic regression results revealed that family communication acts as a protective factor against HIV risk through a lower reported substance use during last sexual intercourse, but it did not appear to affect the number of multiple recent sex partner

The female athlete triad.

The female athlete triad is a syndrome consisting of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. The syndrome is increasing in prevalence as more women are participating in sports at a competitive level. Behaviors such as intense exercise or disordered eating patterns can lead to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitarian-ovarian (HPO) axis, resulting in amenorrhea. Hypothalamic amenorrhea can lead to osteoporosis and increased fracture risk. Adolescents may particularly be at risk because it is during this crucial time that females attain their peak bone mass. Prevention of the female

The adolescent outcome of hyperactive children diagnosed by research criteria: I. An 8-year prospective follow-up study.

The psychiatric outcome is reported for a large sample of hyperactive children (N = 123), meeting research diagnostic criteria, and normal control children (N = 66) followed prospectively over an 8-year period into adolescence. Over 80% of the hyperactives were attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 60% had either oppositional defiant disorder and/or conduct disorder at outcome. Rates of antisocial acts were considerably higher among hyperactives than normals, as were cigarette and marijuana use and negative academic outcomes. The presence of conduct disorder accounted for much th

The present study is a cross-sectional comparison of coping behaviors in adulthood. Ninety-six adolescents, young adults, middle adults, and older adults were administered Lazarus' Ways of Coping questionnaire and a defensive coping scale. Patterns of coping and perceived effectiveness of coping strategies were examined in both threatening and challenging contexts. Results indicated that patterns of coping varied across age groups, with adolescents and younger adults endorsing more defensive mechanisms, such as escape-avoidance, hostile reaction, and self blame. Instrumental strategies were us

Anorexia nervosa, emotional go/no-go, and the distinct effect of testosterone.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral disinhibition in the context of negative emotion (e.g., disgust, fear, etc.) may promote the core psychopathology of anorexia nervosa (AN). Affective models of AN position a number of clinical behaviors as functioning to reduce negative affect. Gonadal hormone dysregulation, in particular testosterone, likely plays some role in this process. METHOD: Adolescent and young adult AN (n = 32) and healthy control (HC; n = 20) participants completed an emotional go/no-go task--a valenced measure of behavioral disinhibition--and had blood drawn to assess gonadal steroid hormone

[Social phobia in developmental period: from theory to therapy].

The contemporary integrative theoretical and therapeutic concepts of social phobia in developmental period have been presented in the study. Besides current neurobiological theories, a very important hypothesis about behavioral inhibition has been represented as a predisposition of social phobia. The cognitive-behavioral theories of social phobia are dominant among psychological theories. The integrative concept of social phobia is the most realistic approach to this disorder and the bridge between biological and psychological theories. The interaction between biological and psychological etio

Transgender and gender-diverse autistic adolescents are at elevated risk of depression.

Autistic people are more likely to be transgender and gender diverse than the general population. Furthermore, co-occurring trait-level autism and transgender and gender-diverse identity are associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, and autistic adolescents who identify as transgender and gender diverse have more internalizing behaviors than both non-transgender and gender-diverse autistic adolescents and non-autistic transgender and gender-diverse adolescents. However, no study has yet examined the extent to which transgender and gender-diverse identity predicts specific co-occurrin

A mixed-methods evaluation of a large-scale online gatekeeper training to prevent youth suicides in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The increasing trend in suicides among young people emphasizes the urgent need for effective prevention strategies. Gatekeeper trainings (GKTs) equip individuals in a young person's network with skills to recognize signs of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, initiate supportive conversations, and facilitate referrals to appropriate care. This study examines the reach of a large-scale Dutch online-GKT in training both informal and formal gatekeepers. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from Dutch adults who participated in the online-GKT between October 2022 and March 2023. Pri

The relationship between self-reported adherence and virological outcomes among adolescents on antiretroviral therapy in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV demonstrate suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy compared with adults. This significantly impedes progress toward achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. Understanding the relationship between self-reported adherence and virological outcomes among this population is essential for guiding treatment monitoring strategies and intervention development in resource-limited settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 515 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years living with HIV and receiving ART at seven health facilities in the Ashanti Regio

The impact of the SKILLZ intervention on sexual and reproductive health empowerment among Zambian adolescent girls and young women: results of a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Zambian adolescent girls and young women (AGYW, age 15–24) experience a disproportionate burden of HIV and unintended pregnancy. Sports-based interventions, which affect sexual health behaviors via improving sexual and reproductive empowerment, may be an innovative and effective approach for promoting HIV and unintended pregnancy prevention. We sought to evaluate the impact of a peer-led, sports-based intervention on sexual and reproductive empowerment among in-school Zambian adolescent girls and young women. METHODS: Data come from the ‘SKILLZ’ study, a cluster randomized controll

PTSD, dysregulation profile and substance use: exploring differences in a sample of adolescents in an outpatient clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Experiencing traumatic events (TEs), especially interpersonal TEs, is related to an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Both TEs and PTSD are associated with a higher risk of substance use and problems in emotion regulation. Little is known about the associations between specific types of TEs, problems with general self-regulation (including cognitive and behavioral components) and substance use severity in adolescents. Knowledge on these associations could provide important approaches for prevention and therapy for adolescents with a history of tr
