PURPOSE: This study examined the development of timing characteristics in early spontaneous speech of children who were later identified as having reading disability (RD).
METHOD: Child-adult play sessions were recorded longitudinally at 2 and 3 years of age in 27 children, most of whom were at high familial risk for RD. For each speaking turn, the number of syllables was determined and an acoustic analysis measured the time allocated to articulation, pausing before speaking, and pausing during speaking.

The present study investigated dysarthric symptoms in children with cerebellar tumors. Ten children with cerebellar tumors and 10 orthopedic control children were tested prior and one week after surgery. Clinical dysarthric symptoms were quantified in spontaneous speech. Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Due to a variety of factors, many pediatric trauma patients are initially evaluated and stabilized at adult hospitals that lack pediatric specific emergency medicine and surgical expertise. BACKGROUND: Intestinal intussusception is a common pathology among children, whereas it is a rare entity in adults. Forty-five children with Schistosoma haematobium infections were studied utilizing a whole-blood culture technique to assay lymphocyte blast transformation responses. The nuchocephalic reflex, previously undescribed, was investigated in a controlled study of 146 subjects ranging in age from 11 hours to 94 years. In 110 subjects over 16 years of age, the presence of the reflex was correlated directly with evidence of diffuse cerebral dysfunction as measured by a shortened form of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. Skiing on artificial ski slopes is enjoyed by a large number of children, but the rate and types of injuries amongst young skiers is unknown.
