A Comprehensive Evaluation of Feasibility and Acceptability of a Nurse-Managed Health Clinic for Homeless and Working Poor Populations: A 3-Year Study.

Background/Objectives: Homeless populations have higher rates of chronic illness and mortality than more advantaged peers but have low primary care engagement. Nurse-managed clinics emerged as a possible solution to increase healthcare access for marginalized populations. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of feasibility (conceptualized as patient recruitment and retention) and acceptability (conceptualized as patient satisfaction) of a nurse-managed primary care clinic tailored to people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Methods: This is a three-year retrospective chart revie

Patient Activation, Social Support, Physician Trust, and Shared Dialysis Decision-Making: A Cross-Sectional Investigation.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: People undergoing maintenance dialysis often lack essential information about kidney therapy options. Therefore, nephrologists must involve patients and families in shared decision-making (SDM). In this investigation, we hypothesized that patient activation, social support, and physician trust would be associated with patient-reported SDM. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. METHODS: We surveyed hospitalized individuals receiving maintenance dialysis. Participants completed the 9-item SDM questionnaire (SDM-Q-9) and the Patient Activation Measure-13, the Multidimen

A spatiotemporal analysis of emergency medical services use for palliative situations in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 56.8 million people worldwide require palliative care annually, while only 14% receive such care. Within low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), this imbalance is prominent, as these countries contain up to 80% of patients requiring palliative care. To correct this imbalance, palliative care integration with other disciplines has been recommended. One developing area of integration in the South African (SA) LMIC context involves emergency medical services (EMS). OBJECTIVES: To describe the geographical and temporal distribution of the EMS and palliative situation in

The impact of parental general anxiety disorder on parenting practices among Libyan parents: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders is one of the most prevalent mental diseases globally, with cases rising by over 55% from 1990 to 2019. Recent research suggests anxiety can be contagious and may affect daily routines and parenting practices. In North African and Middle Eastern countries, where people face unique challenges such as natural disasters, war, and economic instability, the impact of anxiety on parenting is not well studied. This study aims to explore how general anxiety disorder (GAD) affects parenting styles and to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of GAD among Libyan parents,

Prevalence of Epilepsy across 25 Sub-Counties in Three Districts of Northern Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions worldwide, with large variation in prevalence across sub-Saharan African countries. Northern Uganda is one of the poorest areas of the country and has seen a high density of pigs and a prevalence of Taenia solium, a zoonotic tapeworm transmitted which causes neurocysticercosis in humans. The objective of this study was to estimate the population-level prevalence of active epilepsy in 25 sub-counties of northern Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010-2011 in 25 sub-counties of Moyo, Adjumani, an

Prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection and associated factors among students living on campus in South-eastern Gabon.

BACKGROUND: The Hepatitis B-virus is the etiological agent of an infection that affects liver functions and potentially causes disorders. Approximately, 300 million people are living with acute or chronic HBV-infections worldwide, and only a fraction of them have access to medical care. The sub-Saharan African (SSA) regions house around 80 million of reported infection cases, and certain SSA-groups like pregnant women and drug-addict are among the most vulnerable. In as much as there is insufficient national data on young adult groups, this study aims to determine HBV-prevalence and associated

Tuberculosis screening, isoniazid preventive therapy coverage and factors associated with active TB diagnosis among people living with HIV at public health facilities of central Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: TB is the most frequent opportunistic infection and cause of death among People living with HIV/AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus-positive individuals are routinely screened for tuberculosis as a means of monitoring efforts to mitigate the consequences of the disease on HIV-positive patients. TB status assessment identifies HIV-positive clients who show no evidence of active TB by symptom screening and would benefit from treatment with isoniazid for prevention of TB disease among HIV positives. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in public healt

Sexual dysfunction among people with mental illness in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction is the most frequent health problem among psychiatric patients. This could be the result of both the nature of the illness itself and the side effects of prescribed psychotropic medications. It also significantly affects an individual's general well-being, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and treatment outcomes. Therefore, the current systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the combined prevalence of sexual dysfunction and its correlated factors among people with mental illness. METHODS: We retrieved eligible primary studies using

Impact of national commissioning of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) on equity of access in England: a PrEP-to-need ratio investigation.

OBJECTIVES: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV acquisition. In England, NHS availability was limited to participants of the PrEP Impact Trial until late 2020. Some key populations at greater risk of HIV were under-represented in the trial suggesting inequities in trial PrEP access. We used the PrEP-to-need ratio (PnR; number of PrEP users divided by new HIV diagnoses) to investigate whether PrEP access improved following routine commissioning in October 2020 and identify populations most underserved by PrEP. METHODS: Aggregated numbers of people receivin

The epidemiological patterns of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: global estimates of disease burden, risk factors, and temporal trends.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has increased steadily over the past few decades. Elucidating its global burden will facilitate more effective disease management and improve patient outcomes. We explored the disease burden, risk factors, and trends in incidence and mortality in NHL globally. METHODS: The up-to-date data on age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of NHL were retrieved from the GLOBOCAN 2020, CI5 volumes I-XI, WHO mortality database, and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, focusing on geographic disparities worldwide. We reported incidence and

Optimized strategy for real-time qPCR detection of Onchocerca volvulus DNA in pooled Simulium sp. blackfly vectors.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerca volvulus is a filarial parasite that is a major cause of dermatitis and blindness in endemic regions primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Widespread efforts to control the disease caused by O. volvulus infection (onchocerciasis) began in 1974 and in recent years, following successful elimination of transmission in much of the Americas, the focus of efforts in Africa has moved from control to the more challenging goal of elimination of transmission in all endemic countries. Mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin has reached more than 150 million people and elimination

Exploring HIV status as a mediator in the relationship of psychological distress with socio-demographic and health related factors in South Africa: findings from the 2012 nationally representative population-based household survey.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress as measured by mental disorders like depression and anxiety is more prevalent in people living with HIV (PLHIV) than in the general population. However, the relationship between mental disorders and HIV is complex and bidirectional. Improved understanding of the relationship between mental disorders and HIV is important for designing interventions for this group. This paper explores the interrelationships of psychological distress with HIV and associated socio-demographic and health-related factors. METHODS: This secondary data analysis used the 2012 South A
