Associations between short-term PM2.5 exposure and major cardiovascular events in high-risk population: a nationwide case-crossover study.

OBJECTIVES: While particulate matter with a diameter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) is a recognised major modifiable risk factor with well-documented short-term impacts on acute cardiovascular events in the general population, data regarding its effects on high-risk populations with significant atherosclerotic risk are limited. This study aims to identify the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and acute major cardiovascular events in Thailand. DESIGN: A time-stratified case-crossover design. SETTING: The nationwide Cohort Of patients with high Risk for cardiovascular Events-Thailand registry

Pilot-scale production and characterization of liquid fuel from mixed non-recyclable plastics for potential steam-generation applications.

Post-sorting non-recyclable plastic residues pose significant management challenges due to the limitations of mechanical recycling. This study demonstrates a novel, direct vacuum-assisted pilot-scale batch pyrolysis of mixed plastic rejects dominated by polypropylene (PP, ≥45 wt%), low-density polyethylene (LDPE, ≥45 wt%), polystyrene (PS, ≤5 wt%), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE, ≤5 wt%) in an insulated 1,000 L reactor without continuous inert-gas purging. Under optimized operating conditions (30 min air pre-evacuation at 15-20 kPa, 20 kg feed loading, LPG heat input at ∼25% maximum flow,

Quality evaluation of Cistanche deserticola and rice wine-steamed products: drying kinetics, intelligent sensory, and chemometrics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cistanche deserticola (CD), a functional plant with homology of medicine and food, is used for reinforcing kidney to strengthen yang and loosening bowel to relieve constipation. It is ordinarily processed with rice wine-steamed, which is known as wine-steamed CD (W-CD) to enhance effects in clinical practice. Nevertheless, timely processing of CD is an effective means to ensure quality; the processing techniques also played a crucial role in influencing the quality of CD and its products, which require further investigation. This study aimed to explore suitable drying methods for t

Age-stratified respiratory viral detection patterns and exploratory environmental associations in a tertiary-care hospital testing cohort in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Respiratory viral detection in large metropolitan clinical settings is shaped by age, seasonality, testing behavior, and environmental context, but these dimensions are rarely evaluated together using multiplex molecular data. Istanbul's transcontinental position, dense urban structure, and heterogeneous climatic and air-quality conditions provide a relevant setting for integrated analysis of respiratory viral detection. This retrospective sample-level study analyzed 21,151 clinician-requested respiratory specimens tested by multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in Istanbul

Individual SMR neurofeedback responsiveness during a single session and its associations with autonomic regulation and shooting performance in elite rifle athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) neurofeedback has attracted growing interest for improving performance in precision sports; however, inter-individual variability in responsiveness remains poorly understood, and its associations with autonomic regulation and shooting performance have not been examined within a single-session paradigm. Because a substantial proportion of trainees show limited ability to self-regulate EEG activity ("non-responders"), characterizing responsiveness is important for developing personalized protocols. This exploratory study aimed to characterize individual di

Automated morphological classification and quantification of cerebrospinal fluid extracellular vesicles via AFM and machine learning.

Morphology of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from cerebrospinal fluid is an important property that could uncover brain-related conditions. However, native morphology could get distorted during imaging, such as with atomic force microscopy (AFM) in air, which enables relatively simple visualisation and automated morphology assessment. Therefore, we compared 24 different preparation methods for the same sample of EVs according to the resulting size, height, aspect ratio and shape distributions obtained from the AFM images. We defined 5 different shape categories (round, flat, concave, single-lobe

Synthesis and characterization of hematite nanomaterials imprinted with acetone, ethanol and methanol for AI-Based IoT gas sensor arrays.

Indoor air pollution, primarily caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as acetone, ethanol, and methanol, poses significant health risks and necessitates the development of efficient, real-time monitoring solutions. Conventional gas sensors often operate at high temperatures and are limited to detecting a single gas type, which restricts their applicability for comprehensive air quality management. To address these challenges, this study presents the development and evaluation of an advanced electronic nose (E-nose) system capable of detecting acetone, ethanol, and methanol at low op

Development of hemoglobin microbubbles for acoustic blood oxygen sensing: A study on PEGylation and gas core modification for in vivo applications.

The creation of innovative ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) with the ability to monitor oxygen levels in real-time holds immense potential for advancing early diagnosis of various medical conditions such as hypoxic/reperfusion injury. In this study, we propose the development of oxygen sensitive UCAs using microbubbles composed of hemoglobin (HbMBs), which can function as sensors for blood oxygen levels. Previously, we performed a study highlighting the initial proof-of-concept efficacy of air-filled HbMBs in detecting oxygenation changes in vitro, offering a promising tool for clinically det

Climatic and meteorological exposure and mental and behavioral health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

As climate change exerts wide ranging health impacts, there is a surge of interest in the associations between climatic factors and mental and behavioral disorders (MBDs). Existing quantitative syntheses focus mainly on heat and high temperature exposure, neglecting the effects of other climatic factors and their synergies. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence of associations between climatic exposure and combined mental and behavioral health conditions and specific mental disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, dementia). Effects of Virtual Teaching on Swedish Teachers' Voices During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

PURPOSE: Since the beginning of 2020, teachers all over the world have had to switch over to virtual teaching because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This change of teaching mode has unknown consequences on the vocal health of teachers who already experience voice disorders at a rate nearly double that of the general population. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate teachers' self-reported voice problems during virtual teaching compared to face-to-face teaching and how they are associated to perceived risk factors in the work environment. METHOD: Participants included 141 teachers

Machine Learning Analyzed Weather Conditions as an Effective Means in the Predicting of Acute Coronary Syndrome Prevalence.

BACKGROUND: The prediction of the number of acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) based on the weather conditions in the individual climate zones is not effective. We sought to investigate whether an artificial intelligence system might be useful in this prediction. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2018, a total of 105,934 patients with ACS were hospitalized in Lesser Poland Province, one covered by two meteorological stations. The predicted daily number of ACS has been estimated with the Random Forest machine learning system based on air temperature (°C), air pressure (hPa), dew point temperature (Td) (°

Rediscovering Allergic Rhinitis: The Use of a Novel mHealth Solution to Describe and Monitor Health-Related Quality of Life in Elderly Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a disease characterized by IgE-mediated hypersensitivity responses akin to allergic asthma. Although common in children and young adults, AR can be particularly vexing in the elderly: several studies have underlined its impact on the patient's self-perceived health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Available literature data on AR-affected elderly patients remain sparse and often focused on specific characteristics. mHealth solutions such as MASK-air® can be used in assessing salient clinical characteristics and unique shifts in self-perceived HR-QoL in o

Positive bias in particulate matter emissions data due to sulfur dioxide adsorption and oxidation on glass fiber filters.

Recent particulate matter emisssion tests at an ArcelorMittal sintering line in Vitoria, Brazil have indicated a change in particulate matter emissions that was not consistent with the steady and proper operation of the combined electrostatic precipitator and pulse jet fabric filter control system. ArcelorMittal Brazil, ERM Brasil, and Air Control Techniques, P.C. have evaulated the use of borosilicate glass fiber filters in the U.S. EPA Method 5 sampling train as a possible reason for the anomolous change. The scope of this study included (1) possible adsorption and oxidation of SO2 on borosi

Otosclerosis: Experience With Stapes Surgery.

Introduction Otosclerosis is a disorder in which the footplate of the stapes is replaced by an abnormal bone, thereby affecting sound transmission to the inner ear at the level of the oval window. The solution to this condition is to reestablish this mechanism back to normal via the ossicular chain to the inner ear. The aim of stapes surgery is to improve the hearing level to thresholds appropriate enough to obviate the need for hearing aid. The hearing improvement achieved after surgery often lasts for many years. The purpose of the current study was to review our experience and find out the

Epigenetic marks of prenatal air pollution exposure found in multiple tissues relevant for child health.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal air pollution exposure has been linked to many adverse health conditions in the offspring. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these associations. Epigenetics may be one plausible biologic link. Here, we sought to identify site-specific and global DNA methylation (DNAm) changes, in developmentally relevant tissues, associated with prenatal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). Additionally, we assessed whether sex-specific changes in methylation exist and whether DNAm changes are consistently observed across tissues. METHODS: Genome-scale

The Effects of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in a Rat Model of Tobacco-Associated Erectile Dysfunction.

Tobacco use is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) via a number of mechanisms including vascular injury and oxidative stress in corporal tissue. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSC) have been shown to ameliorate vascular/corporal injury and oxidative stress by releasing cytokines, growth factors and antioxidants. We assessed the therapeutic effects of intracavernous injection of ADSC in a rat model of tobacco-associated ED. Thirty male rats were used in this study. Ten rats exposed to room air only served as negative controls. The remaining 20 rats were passively exposed to cigarette smoke

Heterogeneous oxidation of squalene film by ozone under various indoor conditions.

Abstract The effects of indoor conditions (ozone concentration, temperature, relative humidity (RH), and the presence of NO(x)) on heterogeneous squalene oxidation were studied with Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The heterogeneous kinetics of squalene-ozone reaction revealed a pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 1.22 x 10(-5)/s at [O(3)] = 40 ppb. Oxidation kinetics were insensitive to temperature over the range of 24-58 +/- 2 degrees C as well as to RH and presence of NO(x). Products, however, were affected by the environmental parameters. As te

HIF-1 alpha-deficient mice have increased brain injury after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Evidence suggests that the activation of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) may promote cell survival in hypoxic or ischemic brain. To help understand the role of HIF-1 alpha in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, mice with conditional neuron-specific inactivation of HIF-1 alpha underwent hypoxia-ischemia (HI). Mice heterozygous for Cre recombinase under the control of the calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II promoter were bred with homozygous 'floxed' HIF-1 alpha transgenic mice. The resulting litters produced mice with a forebrain predominant neuron

[The role of computed tomography in assessing subphrenic abscesses after posttraumatic splenectomy].

INTRODUCTION: We studied subphrenic inflammatory abscesses and splenic fluid collections after splenectomy for trauma. These complications may appear early or late postoperatively; they are easily demonstrated with CT, which permits accurate spatial assessment of the lesions and appropriate treatment with percutaneous drainage. We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of CT in subphrenic inflammatory conditions after emergency splenectomy for traumatic spleen rupture and found that CT is a precious tool for rapid and easy diagnosis and follow-up of subphrenic abscesses treated with percutaneous

Microbiome-based profiles of airborne bacteria to support microbial risk assessment in cleanroom environments.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining aseptic conditions is essential for cell product processing, as sterilization cannot be applied to living cells. Conventional environmental monitoring relies on particle counts and culture-based colony-forming unit measurements. These indicators fail to capture much of the diversity and provenance of airborne microbes because many taxa are nonculturable or require growth conditions not supported by standard culture media. Therefore, comprehensive DNA-based microbiome analysis is critical for evaluating microbial risks that conventional methods may overlook; however, s
